wbayek - 2010-06-01 1:01 AM I have a funny OWS story from the swim yesterday.  So there is a buoy about 50 yards from our dock.  Some of my swimming was out to the buoy and back.  I know from my pool swims I use about 16 or 17 strokes per 25 yards.
.

16 or 17 strokes per 25??!!  That is IMPRESSIVE!

I haven't been keeping my logs up.  BUSYYYYYYYYYYYY at home!!  Lots going on.

In any case I did the EWU Iron Eagle Sprint Triathlon last weekend it was fun!  I did have a couple of screw ups! LOL   I did a 50 meter warm up before the start then at the start (pool swim) my goggles slipped back!!!  So I had to stop and adjust them.   Then I miscounted and swam an extra 50 meters!!!   Next time I will have my wife count laps for me!  The bike and the run went well.  It was very windy and the run was hilly.  They haven't posted the results but I finished in about 1:04.
It was a great time!

Hey Rene - that's great! Looks like you just are an over achiever on the swim, eh? Glad it went well.

Another great race it sounds like.  You need that extra 50 yards as a handicap!

Great race Rene!  So you had to count your own laps, that is interesting, but easy to miscount.  I always screw my counts up in practice which is why I love my lap watch, so I don't have to think about that.

Group poll:  What is your longest continuous bike ride (time or miles)?  Mine was 56 miles at my HIM race.

In a single day - 102 miles
In seven consecutive days - 658 miles (from San Francisco to Los Angeles)

All about 15 years ago. Now (in this incarnation) - 30 miles outside. 3 hours inside on the trainer (don't know how many miles off the top of my head...would have to check my logs!)

60 without stopping.

112 in one day at the Pan Mass Challenge (and 80 the next day!) .  The 112 doesn't really count since it's a charity ride for cancer and there are amazing stops every 20 miles.  I always skip a few, but you stop for lunch and get a massage and the whole weekend is a big party.

Longest bike was 56 at last year's HIM.  I did a charity bike ride about 20 years ago that went from Philly down to Atlantic City and that may have been 60 miles, but that was for fun and a lifetime ago.

I have a question for our resident running experts.  Are there adjustments I should be making in my stride/form when running uphill and downhill?  I find that I get very winded going uphill... which is not surprising and makes logical sense.  But it seems like I get VERY winded and then it's hard to recover.  Wanted to know if there are any tricks of the trade, besides running more hills, to help in getting up the hills.

I'm not sure I count as an expert but I always shorten my stride a smidge and lean a little more forward running up hill. I think of it like changing gears on the bike. Conversely, I lengthen my stride a smidge on the downhill...I try to keep the lean though.

Bill, I don't think us clydesdales and hills mix so well.  I've heard lean foward, lean back, high knees, pump your arms............... but nothing seemed to make it any better.  230 pounds is 230 pounds.  I now live in an area that is quite hilly.  Most of my runs now are on hills.  The speed work I did yesterday (6:53 and 6:26 miles)were on these hills.  Running hills seems to be easy now, and honestly I couldn't tell you what I am doing.  I am just doing whatever form came naturally from running more hills.  I know this is not the answer you wanted, but I've been through all of the different "techniques" already and I found no magic bullet.

In truth, I'm also quite tired after 5 1/2 hours in the car today going to the NAGA (North American Grappling Association) Jui Jitsu tourney with my 13 year old.  He won his division for his weight class and we have the samurai sword award to prove it!  We were shocked since he didn't expect much.

Warren - that's great news! Congratulations! You must be so proud of him.

Way better than any race win for sure.

itsallrelative_Maine - 2010-05-31 7:29 PM I had a really great bike ride today. I can easily talk myself out of doing my outdoor bike rides - but every time I do get to ride outdoors, I really have such a good time. (Warren - this is a bit of repeat from the other thread, sorry about that)

While riding, I realized today how much I like training...specifically - biking but the other sports too. I love being outside, going slow enough to really enjoy the scenery around me, hearing the wildlife (we live in the boonies), seeing the beautiful farmhouses, the blueberry fields (Maine blueberries are really the best), and the small towns. I also realized how much more confidence I have in what I can do. Last year, I was just trying to make it up a really hard hill, make it through the sprint swim distance without drowning, run the whole distance of a 5K. This year I don't have any fear that I won't make the swim distance. I rode right up my nemesis hill without stopping much faster than I could last year. I ran a whole half marathon a month ago. This really has been an inspiring path for me to go down - to see what I am truly capable of and how lucky I am to be able to do these things. I need to remember this when I get down about my race times...

I hope you all had a great weekend. I couldn't have asked for a nicer one (with the small exception of LOTS of fighting between my two daughters...they got put to bed early tonight). Thanks (as always) for the wonderful words of encouragement, the inspires and the perspective.

Look at all the difference a year makes.

120mi

112mi

100x2

Aside from the 112 all were solo. One of the centuries was indoors on my trainer.

Wow! That's impressive. I don't think I have the mental fortitude to do that. But it would be fun to try! Maybe next winter.

Try to lift your feet off the ground and not push off with your toes when you are running uphill. The out of breathe is just fitness, just to slow up the pace a bit more.

Short strides.

When going downhill try not to lean back, it will put the 'breaks on' when you feet hit the ground.

I struggle running downhill with the braking you mention Aaron.  Steeps hills really require a massive leg turnover just to keep from braking.

And I never ran when I was a Clydesdale Ray, but I totally agree on the effects of hills at least on the bike.  Hills I struggled up at 7 or 8 when I was 215 are now 13ish at 180.  If only I could lose 10 or 15 more!  But I like ice cream more than faster paces for now.

I just got back from my bike/run brick today, and realized I hit 10 hours for a week for the first time.  That's gotta be some kind of milestone to hit.  And I actually feel ok, and will probably swim some either tonight or tomorrow.

That made me laugh...true - I think ice cream trumps faster paces in my world as well...especially in summer.

That's fantastic about the training Warren! You are doing so well. Keep it up.

I finished the 10K - it was drizzling turning into rain. The race report can be found here. I set a goal of finishing under an hour. The quickest I had run the course previously was 1:03 and I was able to finish in 57:23 - so I am very happy with the result.

Have a great weekend all!

Great job on the sub 1:00 10k Jennifer!

My longest ride is 76miles, which was last year. May try to top that this summer with a few routes I've done seperately. Combining them would make for some killer elevation gain, but would be fun.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend.
