RockTractor - 2011-02-14 12:14 PM Thanks Kelly for opening up the "door" for one more! Name: RockTractor (Jay) Story: Like Kelly, I come from a competitive swimming background. I swam in high school, summer leagues, and even a short time at college level. Because I was lacking in focus, at the time, academics and fitness were replaced with partying and general "dumb-assery". I bounced around a bit trying to find a direction and eventually I ended up in the military (USAF). While enlisted, I got married, had a daughter, and got my life back on track. A few years later my marriage ended in divorce and shortly after that my enlistment ended. I returned to school (Purdue) and graduated in 1997 with a degree (BSEE). I took a job in Albuquerque, NM (where I still reside) working for Honeywell (where I still work and met my current wife). Family Status: I have been happily married to my second wife for over 7 years. We don't have any children together - just our crazy dog (Abbie). My daughter from my previous marriage is now 21 and has a little boy (I'm a Grandpa!) that is way too cute for words. Current Training: I run, bike, and swim as time permits. Currently, this amounts to anywhere from 6 to 10 hours a week. My current monthly goals are set in terms of distance (200 mi bike, 60 mi run, 12 mi swim). These numbers seem to sufficiently challenge me to reach on a monthly basis. I train with intensity (I'm always trying to best myself on pace, distance, hills, power, etc) but, I lack any real plan or focus. I know I could use my time more wisely and that is what I am currently trying to figure out. 2010 Races: Las Palomas Olympic (Rocky Point, Mex), Jay Benson Sprint (Albuquerque, NM), SharkFest Swim (San Francisco, CA), Santa Fe Sprint (Santa Fe, NM), and Elephant Man Olympic (Elephant Butte, NM). Planned 2011 Races: Las Palomas Olympic (Rocky Point, Mex), Jay Benson Sprint (Albuquerque, NM), SharkFest Swim (San Francisco, CA), Las Vegas Rock and Roll HM (Las Vegas, NV), and (more than likely) Soma HIM (Tempe, AZ). Schedule permitting, I may try to fit in the Santa Fe Sprint (Santa Fe, NM), and the Elephant Man Olympic (Elephant Butte, NM). Weightloss: My journey started the Monday after Thanksgiving in 2006. That day I stepped on the scale and weighed in at 220 lbs. A decision was made: To drive myself to lose weight, I would sign up for and complete a triathlon. That race was the 2007 Jay Benson Sprint... race time 1:22:48. (That race is now my "benchmark" race and have PR'ed it every time I return. My 2010 race time was 1:05:35 and am hoping again to beat that this year.) My current weight is 170 lbs (-50 lbs!) and am working towards a race weight at Las Palomas (04/30/11) this year of 160 lbs. At 160 lbs, I hope to enter "maintenance mode" as far as weight goes. What Will Make Me a Good Mentee: I have a huge appetite for learning and would like to gather a bit of focus on my training. I have been hanging around (mostly lurking) BT for a little while and am always impressed and inspired by many who post here. I'm am hoping that this mentor group can take that to a more personal level.

Welcome aboard!

The Soma HIM course is great (other than Tempe Town Lake) -- it covers most of the IMAZ course and is great PR course.

I'm with you on that - I don't slip into the tights for a run unless it's less than 40. I do however, bundle up pretty good (base / mid / outer layers) on my upper half, wear a decent set of gloves/mits (I hate to have cold hands), and top it off with a beanie for my my noggin'.

These new work filters are killing me.  Yesterday was kinda a bummer but productive none the less.  Really made me take a hard look at my training schedule.  Basically I did a light weight workout and went out to run.  About a mile in my knee started to yell at me.  So I shut it down and head back to the Y.  Get my butt in the pool and get a nice long swim in that was mostly a pull workout.  My lats were so pumped by the end I almost forgot about the knee.  But I had PT yesterday too.  Told the therapist about my weekend and the run.  She basically scolded me and said that while it may not feel like I stressed out my ITBS when I went out riding Sunday that 44 miles through somewhat hilly terrain is going to do it and that running the day after was a horrible idea.  You live you learn?  Anyway we had a long talk about shoe fitting and my insane muscle imbalance in my legs.  I am apparently severely quad dominant which is a major contributor to my issue.  She also pointed out the need for more days I don't tax my legs at all.  Tough for a training junkie like me.

So today started project train smarter not harder. Since I've been ordered to work in more rest days for my legs I'm working on a plan to satiate my need for training, but give my legs the needed rest to heal and recover. It's nice that the weather is warming so pull days in the pool are a viable replacement to other forms of s/b/r. Here is my proposed schedule as of now.

M: Pull Day in Pool, Long Run
T: Push Weights, Core, Legs Off
W: Short Run, Long Swim
Th: Easy Ride, Core
F: Pull Weights, Easy/Pull Swim
S: Long Ride
Suff

Today was day two of trying out the AM workout and I feel I am failing to reap the benefits that are supposed to come with them: "waking up", "energized for the day", "jump start the metabolism", etc. Honestly, I feel tired and am dragging my butt around work.

What might I be missing?

Caffeine???  Laughing

Seriously as someone who has worked out at or around 5 AM for a couple of years now it takes about a week for your body to make the shift.

LOL - I'm trying really hard to keep my caffeine intake constant through this.

Thanks for the feedback. I have committed myself to stick with it this week - so, we'll see what happens. The problem I may have is that due to my work schedule I really only have the time in the AM every-other week (unless I want to get up at 4:30 am - no thanks). Do you think this is regular enough to get my body "used to it"?

My alarm goes off at 4:20.  What are you trying to say?!?!?!?!

I think you can adjust.  It's wholly user dependent though.  I made it work when my daughter was a newborn since it seemed like the only "safe" time to escape the house.  Just kinda stuck since the gym and roads tend to be empty at that time.

In the summer its wheels down at 5 a.m. to get in a  2 hour ride and 40 minute run before work.

Early morning work outs can be kind of addicting once you get into the swing of getting up early.

When do you go to bed when you get up at 4:15 ?????  Wowza.  The earliest I wake up is 5:15, and those workouts are pretty weak.  I'm going to have to suck it up though, because my youngest is dropping his morning nap, so I won't have the 9:30-11:00 block available anymore.  Boo!

Honestly....I think my risk of running injuries goes way, way up the earlier I do my workout.  It takes forever for me to wake up.

I think I need to start counting calories again.   My nutrition has slipped the last 2 weeks.  I feel sooooo hungry all the time.

Generally I pass out on the sofa around 10PM.  I know this because it's usually right at the monologue in Chelsea Lately.  Now you see why I'm a stim junkie.

Speaking of diet.  I've found the last few weeks I have bit of a problem with dried fruit.
