scout142 - 2011-07-05 7:59 AM Had an awesome OWS in the FRIGID Atlantic yesterday morning at the Outer Banks of NC . It was so cold I was gasping for the first 10 min! I was mostly just offshore of the breakers. I took on some water, but was pleased with my sighting and bilateral breathing - eventhough I could only crawl for a few minutes at a time (it made me gasp to keep my face in the water for very long). When I got out of the water, I felt great but must have looked drunk cause I couldn't walk straight for several minutes - like when you play that game where you spin around a bat! Guess all the bobbing messed up my equilibrium. Ended up swimming abt 1 mile in 45 mins =)

Were you wearing ear plugs? I have to or I will get dizzy and drunk feeling.

Yeah, that or you were oxygen deprived. I get like that as well,  but it quickly goes away. Were you wearing a swim cap? Was it choppy out there?

A couple of race questions:

1)sun tan lotion? what kind do you use? Do you apply it before the swim? after?

2) I have a 2 piece outfit...does anyone wear the top swimming? Or do you put it on after the swim?

Thanks!

1) depending on the time. Most of my races, the sun really isn't that hot. So, if I add any on it's rare. I usually only put it on for longer races, OLY and up. Sprints, I'm usually done before the sun gets hot.

2) I have a one piece. I, don't like two pieces... But, if it's washable, I would wear it. It's one less thing to worry about in transition. Just remember, most WTC races require shirts on, so like your picture. You won't be able to do that!

Looks like alot of us had some great cycling this past weekend!  Woot!  I myself had a great Z3 18 mile ride yesterday.  I wanted to go cycling Sunday but I spent too much time tweaking the settings of my new saddle and I think I finally got it right!  The LBS was too busy to help with that so I had to do it on my own.  I just have to make sure I'm sitting in the correct position or else my left nut would start hurting again.  I'm super excited to finally break in this saddle!  Rawr!!!  =^.^=

~Roland

Glad you figured it out! It's a very comfortable saddle.

Glad to hear you're feeling better!  Be sure to stay hydrated.

As for the on-the-road repair, I have this kit from Genuine Innovations.  I keep it under my saddle.  I've never had any problems with it.  In fact, I flatted on a ride two weeks ago and got to practice using it.

http://www.genuineinnovations.com/bicycle/commuter-touring/tri-road-tire-repair-and-inflation-seat-bag.html

Thanks you guys.  Yeah, drinking lotsa water.  I'm gonna go cycling a 10 mile (or less) Z1 recovery pace after work today.  I really wanna get my new saddle adjustments perfected early enough before my 1st tri happening end of July.

That kit looks good Daniel.  What about a hand pump?

@Shellback Scott, how many miles did you put before you perfected your Adamo Racing saddle adjustments?

~Roland

I always use C02, one it's lighter... However, if you do flat and use C02, that you let the C02 out when you get near a pump. C02 is lighter and the air seeps slowly. It usually doesn't hold and keep the tire inflated. But C02 is the way to go, it's quick and easy.

Did my long run this morning for 9.8 miles at a 9:33/mile pace and 145 average heart rate. Good run minus already getting run over. I'm in a crosswalk and this woman has a red light and takes the right on red going at least 25 MPH if not faster and she never even slowed down or looked to her left to check and see if there was a car coming straight. I know all of this because I did check and then watched her not slow down and had to back up or she would have taken me out.

I was in such shock I just threw my arms up in a WTF exasperation. Her window was down and the things I wish I had said. I try not to be judgmental but she was easily 350 pounds and puffing on a Marlboro so you can fill in the blanks on what I wanted to call her.

I got bit by a dog riding my bike. Had to call cops, make a report, etc. Now, I may have to get rabies shots! UGH! Any advice on keeping dogs away? I was actually trying not to hit the dog with my bike when he ran over and bit me.

I agree with both points.  As to the sunscreen, add some prerace if you think you'll need it.  Any type should be fine, so long as its water/sweat proof.  As for the wetsuit top, I'd definitely wear it in the swim if I were you (assuming, of course, that it fits like a true tri top and not a t-shirt).  I've seen many people in transition trying to put on a shirt over their wet bodies.  That takes a lot of time!

That completely sucks. I usually try to maintain eye contact with an animal and it seems to work for me. A pack of wild turkeys crossed in front of me one day and the largest male wouldn't move and was keeping cars from passing as well. I passed within 5 feet of him but never took my eyes off of his and he let me pass without incident. I was running by another group of wild turkeys and the same deal. These animals will attack quicker than most dogs. With dogs I've done the same thing and it seems to work, that and picking up my cadence. Tongue out

Will wear tri suit under neath wetsuit...

Remember it's all based on fitness. ...critical volume lets say 9/3's the distance of the swim, 8/3's the distance of the bike, and 7/3's the distance in the run in one week. I feel you will be able to do the distances required for that particular distance.  In fact, Qt2, recommends that an athlete who can't meet these distances for a 1/2 or full, not recommending doing the event.   Hope that helps!

Scott

Ahh okay, but I don't completely understand the 9/3's, 8/3's, and 7/3's distances.  From a mathematical standpoint it seems like 3 times the swimming, 2 and 2/3's biking, and 2 and 1/3 running distance in a week.  Is that correct?

shellback1998 - 2011-07-06 7:22 AM [So, if you get your volume in, and you are able to reach critical volume lets say 9/3's the distance of the swim, 8/3's the distance of the bike, and 7/3's the distance in the run in one week. I'm not sure I get it either. For a HIM with standard 1.2, 56 and 13.1 are you saying you need to be swimming 3.6/week, biking 149/week and running 30.5 per week? That seems pretty high. I actually am at that swim volume every week but I'm at best right now about 60% of the bike and run.  That cannot be what you mean since the IM volumes would be off the charts.

It's just a guideline QT2 Uses, they also say if you reach 80% of the CV that you'd be able to finish as well.  Just remember the higher the distance the increase of hours. My biggest week for hours was 19 so far this season. Just something to consider if anyone is going to do any longer distance races. The time commitment does increase exponentially

Ok well on one hand at least I did understand it. My top week is about 9 hours. I don't know how I could possibly free up another 9 to train.

I did masters swim this morning and then rode for 47 minutes. It was a light recovery ride where my average heart rate was 135. It felt nice to just ride and not worry about speed, cadence or anything else. A couple of times coming down hills where I had a good head of speed I did mini-bursts just for fun.

Fun becomes a novel concept sometimes when we focus on our goals especially the long term ones. It was nice to be reminded of that especially since it wasn't forced.

Masters I worked hard but I'm doing an OWS on Saturday and I'm going to make sure that's fun and at a slower pace.

Gonna do a brick workout after work today!  2nd one after 1st one a couple weeks ago (last week was recovery week).  That one felt pretty good.  I remember hearing a dog chase me during the run but I was lucky the owner called him back before he got me.  Whew! I sympathize with your incident charminchick. >.<

14.00miles bike @ Z3 and 2.00miles run @ ^Z2 right after.  Local running store let me have a trial gu gel pack today which I'll take a couple miles before the bike is done (1/2gu, water, 1/2gu). =)

I ride my bike from my house -- which is very rural and a lot of people let their dogs run loose. Most, I don't have a problem with. This night I was riding from my house to the YMCA in town, did a run on the treadmill and was riding back home when he bit me. I was one grumpy somebody after that!
