Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How was everyone's training day or racing day? I was a smidge lazy and ended up with an hour on the trainer tonight. It was a beautiful day here in Southern California and, yes, I wasted a morning when I could have ridden outside. But sometimes, just puttering around the house is what the doctor ordered. I will regret this, I am sure, because we will be having (supposedly) a pretty big storm coming in Sunday night and that might derail all outdoor activities and force me into the gym. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Leah - Well training inside is a bit of a challenge but it's also good that sometimes end up doing things we don't always enjoy. I look at it as mental training. I'm still pondering my food issues here. I'm debating buying the Paleo for Athletes book right now. I think I'm just scared to try because I don't have a good history of follow through with diets that are super-restrictive and in my eyes because Paleo is that. It's a bit different from the way I eat (which tends to be closer to South Beach type WOE when I'm behaving) it might be setting myself up for guilt and frustration, but what I'm doing now (although works at times) is not working now. I'm having a heck of a time staying on track. |

I would not recommend Paleo for Athletes. At least start with the regular Paleo Diet book that does a really good job explaining things. Also read up on the Zone Diet which is less restrictive than Paleo but has somewhat the same philosophy, albeit approached from a different angle. I agree that restrictive diets are virtually impossible to follow. I view this as a lifestyle diet, not a weight loss diet. You kind of have to be willing to drink the Kool-aid to do either for any extended length of time. I started out with the first No Sugar Challenge here on BT. That was only for ten weeks and I was willing to give it a shot - for ten weeks. At the end of the ten weeks I found that I could live without Diet Coke, without bread, without a lot of things. And Debb, you have come so far and have such a little distance left to cover. Why not give this, or something else offbeat, a shot for ten weeks or some other pre-defined period of time. It might be the shake-up that your body is looking for and without it being "forever," it might be very doable. I hate seeing you being discouraged when you are so close. You are an inspiration to us here. Keep on keeping on. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Debb, do you have a body fat monitoring scale? I think I mentioned this in another post but since I got mine I've realized that when my weight is stable for periods of time I have been losing body fat and gaining muscle mass. If you only use a normal scale you'ld never know that. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay, so you think the first book is more informative? I sorta get the point of the "Athlete" version already. Eat carbs only in the window from 2 hours before, during and after exercise. Any other major points I'd miss out on buy only buying the first book? I'm thinking I'm going to read it and just take what I can incorporate and work on changing habits little by little. I know I won't get the full benefits by not fully complying all the way but at least I won't drive my self crazy. Lisa - My old scale had BF measurement, but it had pretty wild fluctuation. I'd step on 5 times in a row and get a huge range. The new scale I bought doesn't have BF and I was hesitant to invest in another after my experience with the other one. Normally I'd agree that body comp could be changing w/o weight changes, but since I haven't been behaving as I need to be I know there aren't changes or if there are they are in the wrong direction. I guess the problem with training for these big races is I'm freaking out a little bit more about these mis-steps then I should be. I know this isn't always a linear path but I guess I feel like the clock is ticking while I screw around too much. Edited by IdealMuse 2010-01-17 2:38 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kate had her half marathon this weekend. I am doing Surf City Half Marathon on February 7. I think Elke was doing that one also, but we haven't heard from her in a while. I just signed up for the Desert International Triathlon, olympic distance, on March 7. I am viewing that as calibration for the HIM on March 27, although the Desert race is supposed to be dead flat. Anyone else have something coming up in the next month or so. |

The first book is definitely more informative about the philosophy and research behind the Paleo Diet. That helps you to believe you aren't doing something completely faddy and hopeless. Anyone else here old enough to remember the Beverly Hills Diet and all that pineapple? Yep, I did it and Phen-fen and other dumb stuff and about ten or fifteen years ago I said "NO" to any more diets. And also read the Zone Diet book. You don't have to follow it perfectly (I don't), but the philosophy and science behind it is very interesting. And then make it all or whatever work for you. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm in the middle of reading several nutrition books to try to come up with something that will work for me. I don't think paleo would work well for me now. I think I would feel deprived, I don't think I could give up all carbs and sugar, I fell good that I am doing whole grains now instead of white. Maybe later on. As long as I am still losing weigh and body fat I'll keep going with what I am doing and try to improve little by little. <---I changed my avatar to a retro one that's me on my bike in 1962 (with a rifle). I am looking forward to hearing about Kate's 1/2 Mary. |

I'm still excited and feeling good about race training. I'm trying to figure out my training schedule now so I am set for the race. I found a free swim clinic in a couple of weeks put on by the Masters Swim Group who puts on my swim lessons. I signed up today. I figure every little bit helps. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() losta - 2010-01-19 11:57 AM How is everyone doing with their mileage so far this year? I'm behind. I've been a semi-slacker the last month and hadn't been including my short walk mileage, but I'm ramping up this week getting my mind ready for group training. I'm sort of limited to the hours the coaches will be scheduling us but plan on supplementing it with walking. Great mileage so far Lisa! Impressive! I went to the store trying to shop for lunch and dinner keeping Paleo in mind while I shopped so I can slowly try and shift focus in that direction even if I don't embrace the diet fully... Um. What. the. Hell. is left to eat? Leah what on earth do you snack on besides nuts? I guess I need to get the book and that will give me ideas, but it seems like even things I consider healthy snacks like celery and hummus would be on the no-no list. |

Um. What. the. Hell. is left to eat? Leah what on earth do you snack on besides nuts? I guess I need to get the book and that will give me ideas, but it seems like even things I consider healthy snacks like celery and hummus would be on the no-no list. I certainly do a lot less snacking now than I did before and part of that is that I am not eating the food that triggers cravings. Go easy on the nuts. They might be Paleo, but they are lethal calorie-wise. This is something I have to be careful about. Generally I snack on nibbly things like cherry tomatoes or tangerines. If you tie that in with the Zone strategy of always having some (not a lot) protein at every meal or snack, it really cuts down hunger pangs and cravings. So have some beef jerky or a piece (1-2 ounces) of deli turkey (from the deli, not the nitrate-filled stuff, or cook it yourself) along with some fruit or vegetables. Not a lot, small amounts, and you will be surprised at how far that takes you. I am not completely Paleo, but I try not to go beyond what is allowed on Zone. I don't care that much for hummus, but I am pretty sure that hummus is allowed on Zone so if I wanted it, I would have it IN SMALL AMOUNTS. Black beans are allowed on Zone, but not Paleo and I have a small amount of black beans a couple times per week. Here is a Zone recipe that I make for breakfast a couple times per week: one corn tortilla (Zone, not Paleo) layer 1/4 cup of black beans on top (again, Zone, not Paleo) then put the egg mixture on top of that (1/3 c onions, 1/3 c bell pepper sauteed up and then scramble it into one egg and 1/4 c Eggbeaters (all of that is both Zone and Paleo) top it with one ounce of low-fat shredded cheese (Zone, not Paleo) zap it in the microwave long enough to melt the cheese put one ounce of avocado on top (both Zone and Paleo) have salsa to taste This is a very tasty breakfast dish that is Zone, but not Paleo, but it is not so far removed from Paleo that I won't have it. It is also very filling. If you follow Zone, it is a two-block meal. With Zone, hummus is considered part of the "good fats" because of the olive oil in it. But it can be fairly caloric, unless you make it yourself and are able to modify it. Anyway, I don't follow Paleo religiously, but fairly closely. When I did the No-Sugar Challenge starting in December 2008, I found that it did take a week or two before the beneficial effects of no processed food started kicking in. Give it a little bit of time. I used to love ice cream. I mean, really love ice cream. As in, I had it almost every single day (and sometimes in great quantity). I haven't had ice cream since December 2008. My head misses it and has fond memories, but the rest of my body is just fine without it. People have posted that for the first couple weeks on Paleo they were tired and had no energy. Since I eased into Paleo, I can't directly speak to that, but I had no such problems with the No-Sugar Challenge. Good luck. Keep at it. Give it a fair trial. |

Yep, still a long, long way to go to 2010. I swam this morning (and that is counted in my totals) and am supposed to have a trainer ride tonight. However, my mom is having a Mary Kay party at her house tonight and that might preempt all other activities. Oh well, I'll get a free facial and I need some face cleanser stuff anyway. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I actually was on the Zone a number of years ago. I don't plan on revisiting that one. Keeping track of nutrient balances at every meal in my opinion is the biggest pain in the butt of any diet I've tried. I'm not saying there aren't good theories w/in the plan. Just drove me bonkers! ![]() The nuts I buy are in pre-packaged snack packs (100 or 170 calories) so I'm not too worried about over-doing them. I only over do it w/ nuts when they are covered in something sweet. Trader Joes has these really awsome ones covered in honey/sesame seeds. Needless to say I can't buy those. There have to be other good options though. Beef Jerky is either swimming in salt and or sugar so that doesn't seem like a great choice for me. Maybe Spring Rolls, but it seems like that would be a pain to make for a quick grab-n-go kinda snack. Maybe if I keep one of those rotisserie chickens in the fridge I can make quick little wraps with lettuce leaves? Hm. Oh well. Off to eat dinner. Made a salad with wild salmon, oranges, cranberries, and artichokes. |
