I just got back from my bike/run brick today, and realized I hit 10 hours for a week for the first time. That's gotta be some kind of milestone to hit. And I actually feel ok, and will probably swim some either tonight or tomorrow. That made me laugh...true - I think ice cream trumps faster paces in my world as well...especially in summer. That's fantastic about the training Warren! You are doing so well. Keep it up. I finished the 10K - it was drizzling turning into rain. The race report can be found here. I set a goal of finishing under an hour. The quickest I had run the course previously was 1:03 and I was able to finish in 57:23 - so I am very happy with the result. Have a great weekend all! Shaving 6min off is great. Just under 1 min/mile. Nice work. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I haven't raced since the days of sporting the speedo. I don't have a tri-suit, so I just planned on racing in my swim jammers. I have read on BT of a rule requiring participants to wear shirts now (absurd!), but I am not sure which sanctioning head this falls under. The sprint I am doing this weekend requires a USAT card. I read through all of the USAT rules, but found nothing about shirt requirements. Am I overlooking the rule, or is it under another organization? |

I've never heard of having to wear a shirt for the swim, but the water around here is always wetsuit water so almost everyone wears a wetsuit. Maybe the shirt rule refers to bike and run? It does seem beyond silly to require a shirt for swimming. |

The race director at the prerace meeting for Ironman 70.3 Florida mentioned this rule and it was only for the bike and run. The swim was ok with no shirt. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I found the answer. It is a WoTC (governs mdot races) rule that nipples be covered on the run and bike not a USAT rule. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay - so Ray - just put band aids on your nipples before the start of the swim and you are all set. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK I am a nerd, and accidentally let it slip. The nipple rule is a WTC rule not a WoTC rule. WoTC is Wizards of the Coast. Guess I've seen that too many times playing World of Warcraft. ![]() |

WahoooOOOO!!! ![]() Great article Rene, thanks for sharing...I especially like the line: Few are mentally prepared. Perhaps because they don’t step up in training. It’s raining, I’ll run on the treadmill. So, will the race be on the treadmill too? It’s windy, I’ll ride the trainer. Will they cancel the bike if the wind exceeds 10 mph? Step up so you are physically prepared and so you can learn to be mentally prepared for dealing with whatever is thrown your way. |

![]() | ![]() That's a great article. I love the definition of a win, or success. I'm working hard to change my goals/definitions since it's clear I'm not going to be FOP anytime soon. I have a cycling training question. One thing I've learned through Jorge's program and such is the value of warm up and cool down. For my long rides while I'm at the lake, the very beginning of the ride is a very short (< 300 yards) but very steep (105 feet) hill - so average 12%, with a 50ish yard stretch at 17%. I can't get up this hill without a pretty significant output - way, way beyond what would be a normal warm up. I'm pretty spent after the couple of minutes it takes to get out to the main road. Should I just walk up this hill, or is it ok to get to the top even slowly, and then start my actual "ride" plan? Or any other suggestions? |

Just my opinion (based on the hilly routes here) - I'd get to the top however you can (if that's walking the bike, it's walking the bike) and start the "ride" plan once you are out on the main road. I agree - I had always heard about how important warming up is - but it has really been shown to me in the last couple of months. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How about 10 minutes on the trainer, or a short jog before heading out the door for your ride? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Along the lines of Warren's post a month or so ago: I posted on Facebook this morning that I was getting anxious about racing tomorrow for the first time in 10 years. My wife comments back, "Don't think of it as a race, think of it as training for September. It is good practice for you. Work out some of the kinks in your transitions." Really? Where in the hell did that come from? I think she has been sneaking in time on BT. |

Good luck. |
