I was trying to not pay to swim since I already have a gym membership with a pool. But, I really made improvements when I was swimming consistently. And masters made me be more consistent because I was paying for it! My sore throat is better today, but now I can feel whatever I have moving to my chest. Being sick sucks! I used to never get sick, but have been sick 3 times this past year. Not happy about that. I did get my run & bike in last night, so that was good. Today I have weights (do at lunch) and then an easy bike tonight. Should be able to do both no problem. Yeah, I'm actually thinking about dropping my gym membership if the masters team works out. It would save my family a lot of money. We're selling our house and moving closer to the lake, so it will be a lot easier to get in open water swim on the weekends this summer. So you had a good experience with masters swim? I don't know why I've been hesitant to join. I guess I just feel like I'll be the slowest one there, and it will be humiliating (or I won't be able to keep up or something). I need to set my pride aside and do what will make me a better swimmer. Hope you feel better soon. I am the same way. I have looked into the masters near my house. I was to start in jan then I pushed it off until feb now I am saying I will wait until the summer. I am just afraid to be the slow one- I need to suck it up and just go. |

I ran outside yesterday and really noticed how sore and painful my hams were while and after the run. Does anyone else experience differences/issues when running on treadmill vs. outside? It makes sense that on the treadmill you do not propel yourself forward and possibly the hams are used differently. A treadmill set at 0% grade actually slightly propels you forward, making it a bit easier and a bit faster than running outside on a falt surface. If you set the treadmill to a 1% grade you'll get about the same effect as running outside on a flat surface. |

What's the point of that, unless. You were doing a fitness test for that distance. Other than an occasional long swim to test fitness, intervals should be relatively short and crisp.Swam 2500 this morning Last 500 was 8:46 It was supposed to be straight but my 500 splits are all srewed up since I can not cout past 5 send my back to Pre-K. I hate counting laps in the pool. I hope my Garmin 910XT shows up soon!!
Its a work out I do once every 4th week to see progression and progress. It also helps me mentally to focus on the little things rather then set times. Also in case you didn't know Ironman is a 4224 yards contineous swim.(JK) I LOVE THE BLACK LINE!! ha! yes i know the distance of an IM swim. reason i asked was because a lot of canned workouts call for straight long swims which do little to boost swim fitness and form. |

Extreme Veteran 610 San Francisco CA | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED For those of you considering trying out masters I would really recommend at least trying it out once. It may take trying out a few different groups to find a good fit but it's made such a difference for me. I started out swimming masters at my local YMCA last year and did that during Ironman training, but recently dropped the swimming membership at the Y and joined an actual masters club where there is an experienced coach on deck that really coaches rather than just writing down the workouts. I'm one of the slower people there but it's a great atmosphere. |

About to head off down country. I'm looking forward to it. It's 50km longer than I've been before, so will be a challenge, but I'm feeling confident. And the forecast is great, fine and sunny with 60-70F temperatures. Its going to be great! |

Pro 4528 Norwalk, Connecticut | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Well, last night i did a nice 1500meter set in the pool, 5x50 10sri and 10x100@20sri, the 50's were not too bad at about 40 secs each, but the 100's i fell off pace hard the last 3, the first was a 1:36 and the last was a 1:51, i need to pace better, and also get my muscular endurance stronger for swimming. This AM it was pouring rain, so i did a Sufferfest Vid, Revolver, 16x1min all out intervals. I targeted just over 400W per interval or 25mph on my Kurt kinetic trainer (just guestimates, but close enough for government work) The first 2-3 were "easy" to maintain that, i popped at 45secs into # 10 and soft pedaled in, sucked up my twinkies, and get back at it for 11-15 with 14-15 being a couple of my best intervals. I was quite happy to be done and actually pretty pleased that i was able to hold in the 4-450W area for close to a minute in 14-15, i will link the garmin file to my blog when i get to work if anyone wants to look at it, i forgot my HR monitor, it was early, i was still half asleep. I also did this fasted, no breakfast, was this the group that was talking about fasted training?? |

Have any favorite Sufferfest vids you'd recommend? I always work out fasted in the morning. Always. I think it's partly the reason I've been able to maintain my weight for the last 18 mos. and keep my body fat low (well, that and clean eating). I'll continue to do it for as long as I'm training for triathlons. I think it would help you with your weight loss goals. |

I've done probably 90% of my running over the last 2 years on the treadmill (4 kids ages 6 and under, live in a neighborhood with crime, and don't like running in 2 feet of snow). I have never noticed a difference once I hit the roads. I tend to run a little faster outside, though. I really love running outside in the summer. I love the heat, the sun, etc. I really think that running is running no matter where you do it. |

I think the first question is what was the purpose of the sprints? 30 seconds is really short, especially for someone who is distance running as compared to short or middle distance track. Also how did you determine what pace to run at? |

They all think what works for them works for all and then cite studies that back them up. For instance the Endurance Nation belief that you don't swim in the offseason or do bricks. There are knock down, drag out fights over these ideas. My feeling is if there is sufficient evidence either by study or anecdotal to try something give it a go. If it doesn't work then move on. No reason to employ practices YOU don't believe in. It just leaves you with doubts come race day. |

AS an FYI I've done 2 IM marathons in K-Swiss Kwikys. No cushioning problems either time. Biggest issues is just to go with what feels the best for you. |
