I'm not one who cares much for how a bike looks, but I have to say, that's a fab looking one you've got there. It looks like a machine made for hard work! Love the colors. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Lookin' good Randy! I'll ride a few more times sans race setup, but once I get mine all prettied up for the race, I'll post a pic as well. Mark -- you know you just guaranteed that it will rain in the race, right?
Good morning everyone. What have we got going on today? For me: a swim and I hope a long run tonight once it has 'cooled down' below 100! |

Randy My races are typically moist :-) After reading about everyone's experiences I think I prefer rain to 100+ temperatures. I went for a nice easy 14 mile ride this morning with my wife and sister-in-law. We're starting our training for this year's Tour de Pink East Coast. I weighed in today at a Rubenesque 209.6 lbs. I'm hoping to be sub-200 for West Point on August 19th. Have a great Sunday everyone! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Michael-since I will be traveling a good bit this week I wanted to go ahead and get race wheels on and make sure everything was working during the ride today. Everything seemed good other than an aging engine I did a 50 minute ride with about 28 minutes at race effort followed by 30 minute hard run. Tried to run at projected "race pace" of 7:30. Worked into run with first mile at 7:45 and decreasing after that. UGH! 7:30 pace at next Sunday's race may be a little optimistic if the heat continues. I had nothing left at the end...finishing with 7:31 avg pace. Watching Euro finals this afternoon and last day of USATF Olympic qualifying this evening.......I'll be putting in recovery time Randy |

That and the stairs. I ran 5 the other day in >105 and 8:30s felt like 6:30s. Racing is gonna be brutal! My legs are shot from the ride yesterday -- I might put my long run off until tomorrow morning... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Between the new wheels and the 100+ mile bike rides, there's some serious inspiration around the bike these days. I just about bonked on a 30 mile ride on Friday after driving from Florida. Must have been dehydrated. In any case, the engine sure wasn't there. Went out for a run this morning at a blistering 10+ mph pace. I really don't do well in the heat. I am, however, very thankful our electricity is back on so it is cooler in the house and we can take showers again. Michael, I don't know how you all aren't melting without A/C. Hope you have a basement... or are headed to the mountains soon. Y'all stay cool if you can! Stu |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Something a little different for the group. This will be a little long. I put my bike on the trainer today and within about 15 minutes of starting the ride, the rear tire (that I have used exclusively on the trainer for the last three seasons) completely came apart. I knew it was going to happen soon. It was so thin and chewed up that I could almost see the tube through it. It also destroyed the butyl tube I was using in the process. I am at work, doing another 24 hour shift so I don't have access to other tire/tube combos that are all in the basement at home. Well, the only way to get in my trainer ride was to put the front tire/tube combo on the back wheel. This was my race tire with a latex tube in it. I was not excited about using an expensive, race only, tire on the trainer but it was that or no workout. Here is where it gets interesting. The race tire/latex tube rolled so smoothly on the trainer roller that it was hard to get it to generate enough resistance. I kept tightening the roller against the tire and it still would not get into the normal range on the spin down test. This is so dramatically different than how the "trainer tire" feels on the trainer that I could hardly believe it. I have been very skeptical that low rolling resistance tires for race day could really make a big difference. Call me convinced. The "feel" in how the two tires rolled on the trainer could not be more dramatic. So, this was all a very long way of saying that low rolling resistance tires really do make a difference. I feel a lot better about the money that I spent on latex tubes/race tires this spring. |

Hope you have a basement... or are headed to the mountains soon. Y'all stay cool if you can! Stu Glad to hear you've got the power back on. That must not have been fun. It hasn't really been all that bad -- last night was the first time that the kids complained about the heat. They are off to spend a few days with the grandparents, so they'll have A/C for a while! Actually, we're getting relief right now in the form of t-storms that dropped the temperature 10 degrees in 15 minutes. Tomorrow we're supposed to be back into the 100s, though. No mountain trips soon, alas, but we are headed to Chattanooga next week. Forecast is for a chilly 90 degrees -- it'll feel like fall! Alas, the t-storms are also dumping 1" hail. I don't own a hardhat, so it'll be an early morning long run for me instead. Have a good night everyone! |

I feel a lot better about the money that I spent on latex tubes/race tires this spring. Jason-I've had the same experience when riding my race wheels with race tire/latex tube combo. I ride on rollers and even at the highest resistance setting the tire/latex tube spins much faster at same watts. I suspect on the smooth rollers this is likely due to the lower rolling resistance of the tire rather than the latex tube but who knows. Come race day I'll take any advantage I can. Randy |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jason- what tires are you using? ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Vittoria Open Corsa Evo Slick in 23 mm width with a Michelin latex tube. I ordered them from Pro Bike KIt and they really weren't that expensive. I do think they really are better than what I was using before as a race tire---although my old race tire is pretty good as well so there might be some placebo effect. Like I said, using them on the trainer is what really made me believe that there might actually be something to this low-rolling-resistance tire stuff. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had a good bike ride yesterday. I rode 38 miles followed by a 3 mile run which was crazy. We barely ever make it through a ride without one of us getting a flat. Any tips and tricks to stop that? :-) Should I add some of that tire flat gel? I weighed in this morning and I am now under 200lbs. I have been hovering around 202 - 207lbs for a year and a half. I was able to keep the 50lbs that I lost off for this long and I am ready for the next stage. Goal weight of 180lbs. May 21st - 206.2lbs May 28th - 204.4lbs June 4th - 206 lbs June 12th - 205.2 lbs June 18th - 203.5 lbs July 2nd - 199.8 lbs P.S.: Wife said she'll buy me a tri bike for my birthday in September. :-) |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Michael -- congrats on the weight loss! And on the impending bike. What kind of flats are you getting on rides? I'm going to do a weight-check tomorrow. I got up and ran this morning -- long run -- before weighing myself, so the result is pretty meaningless. Race tires and tubes: free speed! OK, not free, exactly. But yeah, you can feel it on the trainer for sure. Even the tubes make a difference there -- they lower rolling resistance by being more pliable (easier to deflect), which can actually matter a bit more on the trainer than on the road because the trainer generates resistance in part by relying on rolling resistance. (That's why you can increase resistance by cramming it harder onto the tire -- you are in effect increasing rolling resistance, which is harder to do with race gear!) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today must be my lucky day! I've been debating between 2 different sprint triathlons for next weekend. One was 2.5 hours away from home and the other only an hour away. The one 2.5 hours away is at Texas A&M. It looks like a really cool course. I'm married to an Aggie and our son goes to college there so it would be a fun race to do. I was going to the Texas A&M sprint until I read the wave start list at the local race. They're starting males 45+ and clydes at 6:45 FEMALES 40+ and Athena's at 6:49 --Happy Dance!! Yeah being old and female finally pays off!! There is a 10 minute start until the elites go. All other AG's start after the elites. The last wave (female of course) starts at 7:39!!!! Just being able to start earlier in this heat will help out a lot. Now I'm not only saving gas, time, hotel fee's, etc., by racing local but it will also be a little bit cooler!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Catwoman 2012-07-02 3:17 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rene-sounds like a winner! Hard/good swim at lunch and have an hour easy on the bike scheduled this evening. Kind of in a funk right now with some work stuff and pre race nerves starting to appear. Been in a bad mood all day. I would like to have a really good race at Chattanooga this weekend but I know the heat on the run will be tough........last year I had an awful run and am worried about repeating it this year. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Went for a bike ride earlier and it turned into a much more intense workout than I planned. Once I got on the bike, I found out the front derailleur won't shift gears, so I was stuck on the big cog, of the two, the whole time. This wasn't a disaster, but there are some hills around me, so I was up out of the saddle on just about all of them. It was a short ride, so no big deal, but can anyone show me some resources, or a YouTube video on how to adjust this? I just got my bike tuned up about a month ago or so, and I can't really go a week without it, which I probably would if I have to take it in for another tune up. I also figure it's about time I start figuring this stuff out! Thanks in advance for any help! Edited by WoodrowCall 2012-07-02 6:32 PM |

What happens when you pull on the shifter? Is it stuck in one place? As for resources, the Park Tool site can be helpful: http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help Aclassic 'beginners' book is Zinn & the Art of Road Bike Maintenance. It has flaws, though. I doubt you'd actually screw up your bike following it, but in some cases you might not make it better either. It will give you a basic understanding. A really comprehensive book is Barnett's Manual. It's pricey, and probably more than what you are looking for, though, and not beginner material. Many bike manufacturer's also put some info online about how to maintain their bikes, especially when there are peculiarities in the model. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Anyone else ever had problems with their Garmin 310xt? Mine decided to flip out tonight during my E run. During the workout the display showed anywhere from an 18 minute/mile pace to a 4, 5, and 6 minute mile pace. I never knew running a 4 minute mile could feel so easy... ![]() The pace continued to jump around the entire run. I tried turning it off, checking the settings etc., After a while I just ran by time instead of using the display. When I downloaded the data it shows an average pace. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? |

I'll check out those sources and see what I can do. |
