If the clinic is big enough you might get more of the "mass swim start chaos" vs. just swimming on your own. But it sounds like it's not the people around you during the race, it's the feeling of the wetsuit and how constricting it is. You're right. It's not the people around me or sighting; it's the wetsuit. I feel like it squeezes my chest, and as my heart rate climbs higher, the feeling gets more intense. I don't even swim faster in it, so it's even more frustrating! Thanks for the advice, ladies. It's a sleeveless Xterra. 3 of my races will definitely be wetsuit illegal, so I'll only be wearing it for the oly in June and the HIM in Sept. What wetsuit are you wearing? Is it one of those sleeveless XTerras that go on sale for $99? The problem with less expensive wetsuits is that the neoprene is much less flexible, which can feel very claustrophobic. When you purchase an expensive wetsuit, you're essentially purchasing comfort, not speed. I have a Blue Seventy sleeveless that I don't use much (Karen borrowed it last year) but its a WL and I think it will be too big for you. Yes, it's one of those. I just don't have the $$ for an expensive one right now (and if I did, it would go toward a new bike). They do rent out wetsuits at this race, but that seems weird. Is it? I'm not sure what size I am in a wetsuit...I'd have to go dig mine out of my closet. |

I can't believe it's almost time to start racing! I'm pumped When and where is the tri in Grand Rapids? That is where my wife and her family are from and we will be up there in early July. It's on June 10. It's a new race - last year was the first year. They offer HIM, olympic, and sprint races. I hear the race is well run but the transition area is massive. We all know I suck at transitions, so that should be interesting. I'm in the very last wave of 15 or 16, which is a bummer as well. It's got a flat, fast bike course and a hilly, slow run course....exactly the conditions I'll be facing at Cedar Point, which is why I chose this triathlon. Plus, there's lots for the kids to do in Grand Rapids. Bummer for me but sounds like an awesome race for you. I will be looking out for the race report and I will have to keep that one on mind for next year. The wife loves to get back up there any time we can. We are taking the children up for there first visit up there and get to see how farming families live. |

Extreme Veteran 826 Bristow | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED As for workouts which I have missed a few here lately, unless you count yard and garden work I got in a quick bike ride and did some interval work on the trainer between z1/z2. I got 1400 in yesterday and I am getting more distance between rests and coach has been nice and telling me how far I have come in such a short time. Always good to hear that. I got a great z1 run on Monday night. Thanks Kelly for the advice on the hills. I was much more calm and not worried about the spikes. Overall this HR thing is working I feel better and I have seen some improvements already! |

A good, well fitting wetsuit may make you feel a lot better about the swim, especially in Lake Erie. |

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED Had a great ride on the trainer this morning. Hour 1: 125 average HR, 216 average watts, 18.33 miles. Hour 2: 135 average HR, 228 average watts, 18.84 miles. Total: 130 average HR, 156 max heart rate 222 average watts, 333 max watts, 37.17 miles, cadence 100. Hour one was a consistent pace and hour two was intervals ranging from 1 to 8 minutes. The best thing was I could have easily have gone another hour or gone out for a run at a good pace. Feeling like all my bike time is starting to pay off. There's so many mornings where I play head games just to keep myself on the trainer and this morning was effortless. I know some of you can blow these numbers away but for me that's a really solid effort and to feel as fresh as I did after I'm pumped. 5 weeks and 3 days to A race #1. |

Avg HR 147 Avg pace 7:30 Theres something about rain and mist that makes me fall into the ZONE!! great run!! That is smoking fast, great job! I went out for a run yesterday after masters swim and it was the light misty rain you describe and I was into it as well. At the half way point the skies opened up and it wasn't much fun any more, LOL. |

Master 2151 Johns Creek, Georgia | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED Jen - I had the cheap Xterra $99 wetsuit as well. I hated it! Would have rather frozen and gone without a wetsuit than put that stupid thing on. As Kelly mentioned above she lent me her Blue Seventy sleeveless last year for a half I did. Needless to say, I'm now the proud owner of my very own Blue Seventy wetsuit. |

I mean, I used it for Chicago and was fine, but I certainly wasn't comfortable. Sigh. |

I went sleeveless because most of my races will be on the Gulf Coast somewhere for the foreseeable future. I didn't see the need for the sleeves. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED I personally get very cold in the water, so it is sleeves or no suit at all, usually 75 degrees is the cutoff for me. I am not a super fast swimming, so I don't sorry much about the tri suit being inefficient at this point ... not yet anyway. |

For 99% of the population full sleeve wet suits will be faster. The trick is getting a good wetsuit with a lot of flexibility in the shoulders. In places where it is warm (e.g. Texas) while a full sleeve may be faster, there is a greater chance of over heating so its worth while to go with the sleeveless. |

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED I have two 2XU wetsuits. One with sleeve one without. I trained weights for over 20 years before getting into triathlons. I have a very strong upper body but what holds me back in the pool is my kick sucks. In the open water the wetsuit lets me jet and not having my shoulders restricted by the sleeves makes me faster without the sleeves. I use the sleeves when training and save the sleeveless for races. |
