Goals for the week:

1) Back on the nutrition wagon, I checked the scale and I'm up a few pounds (and I can feel them)

2) Back on the exercise wagon after my "vacation" last week.

3) First open water swim of the season!

Thanks very much, guys! Extremely helpful counseling at this stage, great to have experienced colleagues. Too bad you are far away, this conversation could be endless over a bottle of great red wine....
Good spinning class tonite!

Charles - I hear you with the whole grumble grumble - but consider this... it won't be 10 degrees when you arrive in May. Although I think it won't.... At some point, spring will make its way to both the midwest and New England.

That road bike will be in use on a regular basis by the end of the month.. Sure it might snow a few more times - but you should be good to go before too much longer.

Glad to hear that your wife got a bonus.... which would be worse - having to dip into the tri budget or the beer budget?

You want warm weather? You should have used those air miles to book a flight to Boston. It was 16 degrees at noon today with a windchill of five. Balmy.

I did 50 minutes of PT today and rode the bike for 45 minutes. God I love rest weeks.

Tonight - I went over to a friends house for dinner and tried three great beers:

Bell's Two Hearted Ale - perhaps the best IPA on the planet.
Devil's Backbone's Six Point IPA - good but not great.
Stillwater's Wheat IPA - good hoppy notes with a nice finish...

Long run tomorrow.

That looks like fun Thor. What's up with the tourney dates. Are there really that many teams that they fill the three weekends in April, or did I just not read that right. We're doing a local tourney in Spokane on the weekend of the 25th. It's our annual heads up tourney I was trying to talk you into coming down for.

I still don't know what my status is crossing the border going north due to indiscretions while driving when I was a minor 20 yrs. or so ago. I've heard the Canadian Border Patrol doesn't mess around. Not sure how many guys on my team are in that boat, but they usually travel to 1 or more tourney's in the lower 48 throughout the year.

Have fun with the hockey, Our league wraps up in two more weeks, Then we got the tourney at the end of April.

Have fun in Houston, sounds like a blast.

If you don't mind a cavity search, you will be fine crossing the border...

As far as the tournament, I think it is kind of a destination tourney like Las Vegas etc. You pay per/person and it includes your accommodations. Apparently it is a great time! I will let you know. Depending on schedule, I may bring my bike. Love biking through the mountains!

Remind me of your tourney in about January and I will try get a team together to come on down to Spokane!

Finally got a new bike! Ghost Lector 7000. Full 105 groupo, full carbon. It's not a tri-bike since I am a roadie at heart but I did add aerobars for the Ironman. I can't wait until the weather warms up enough to ride this beauty outside.

MEC?

Love the color. That is a great bike for the price(assuming MEC sale price)

Nothing wrong with a road bike with tri-bars! Gives you great flexibility!

You can really enjoy it as soon as the snow is gone in June...

Yea, MEC. Originally, I was looking at Treks. I've been a Trek man since day one. After doing some research, however, for the features this bike had, a comparable Trek bike was almost $1000 more. Talk about paying for the name.... My wife liked it so much she bought one too.

I felt a little sluggish on my run today and my swim yesterday, however I think a lot of it is mental considering I had a good ride on Saturday. My foot is feeling much better, no sign of discomfort however I only ran 3 miles today. After my long runs later this week I'll have a better assessment.

cleared by doc to start a walk jog. He wants it on a treadmill but said that outside is ok as long as I stop if I start having pain. the site is still sore to the touch, but I can bare it unlike when it originally happen. The bad part is that I put on some weight while not running so will have to start losing that.

In a bit of a funk right now - dispirited maybe. Missed this morning's swim - had trouble sleeping last night for no real reason, crick in my shoulder; slept in a bit.

Weather teased us and got just a hint of warm, and then is diving below the freezing mark again.

Eyeing my first century ride on April 5.

Doing pretty well on nutrition, despite multiple office birthdays this week.

There are good run days and not so good run days... today was one of the not so good days. Started out feeling pretty good but the mid-day warmth sapped my energy and my planned 6 mile run became a 5 mile run with walking breaks during the last 2 miles. It didn't help that I ran out of Nuun and had to use Gatorade today (what we have in office drink fridge) and I've learned that Gatorade doesn't get along with me as well is I would like, sits heavy in my stomach.

On the plus side, I went for my first open water swim of the season yesterday. Took it easy and only swam to the end of the pier and back for a total distance of about 800m. Conditions were great and I'm looking forward to upping my distance, however I need to work on my sighting and pacing a bit more as I kept breaking my rhythm and doing some breast strokes when I sighted.

Words of caution. Watch when you hit the gym, swim, elliptical, and bike hard in 2 days. I can't think of any other reason I got sick. I felt bad this morning but did the elliptical and a ride only to take my temperature tonight. Reads a lovely 102.2. I figure if I blame it on the workouts and not the bed of germs at the gym I can slack for a few days Am I silly because if the fever breaks overnight I'm hitting the pool and weights tomorrow. I plan to take it easy but the rehab with the weights is really starting to help my ITB and I don't feel like skipping a few days. Come he11 or high water I plan to be running when my new plan starts on April 13th.

Does the elliptical really substitute running by building the same muscles or will I lose all of my run fitness?

ETA: Suck it up Nancy Boy!!!

The only I can think of is that it might affect your form since you'll train your body to move in the manner the elliptical makes you, which could affect your stride when you do get back to the pavement.

The elliptical machine will at least keep your "engine" running, ie: the cardio vascular aspect of running. What may suffer is the strength of bones, tissue, etc. that is built through the stress of running.
