Generally for a half:

Breakfast (2 hours before start) -- Powerbar and applesauce
45 Minutes before start - Powerbar
10 minute before start - Gel
As soon as I get on the bike - 1/2 Power Bar
Throughout the bike - 2 to 3 bottles of Infinit (about 250 calories per bottle) and the other half of the Powerbar
Run - Gels at miles 1, 4, 8 and 11 and as much water and gatorade as I can get running through the aid stations

Also -- Salt tabs, once and hour 2 to 3 salt stick tabs.

Thanks! I think the only problem I might have with that is the Power Bar on the bike. My mouth is usually so dry - I have a hard time getting stuff like that down.

starting to fill in some B races. I will be doing a duathalon in April (5K run 22 mile bike 5 k run) signing up today. Also will sign up for a reverse tri in Jun (5k run 9 mile bike and 350 swim). That one is at night and doesn't start until 10:00 pm under the full moon. Found a running group to join up with to help me do some long runs. I will start next weekend and they are doing nine mile runs. Whew have not done that distance in over 15 years. A couple of them are training for the HIMLB.

There are also "ring" style counter/timers that you can tap with your thumb to get times and counts.  Other people can tell you about that.

I bought one of these last weekend and tried it out yesterday....
I didn't like it - it's going back to the store.

I was hoping it would help keep me honest by double-checking my head count during longer sessions. What I found was two things: 1) Having to remember to push the button at the wall is just as hard as having to remember to to increment my head-count. and 2) trying to remember to push that button seems to really be a hindrance to keeping my head count (and the display is not big enough to use by itself without stopping to look at it).

You should have asked to borrow mine first...

I love my SportCount (the ring-style). I attribute it to my increase in distance in the pool. I was losing track of my laps way too easily. It also let's me spot-check times much better than me trying to squint and see the pace clock (my vision is horrendous...Keratoconus).

I wasn't feeling so hot yesterday after work - so, I bagged the gym (swim/run) plans. I went home, got under my favorite blanket, drank a few glasses of Airborne, and watched a movie. Also, no workout this am. :-( I did bring my gym bag to work and hope to feel well enough later to get a swim in and possibly a spin session at my local LBS. (fingers crossed).

I didn't make the spin session at my LBS - it was 71 degrees outside when I got home from work and had plenty of daylight - so, I rode OUTSIDE- Whooo Hooo! Then, to the gym for some pool time.

No AM workout this morning (I just can't seem to motivate myself in the morning). I have a run with my wife planned this evening then some sand volleyball.

Powerbar helps me stay fuller.  But I think any (semi) solid food will work like clif blocks or jelly beans.

For the night tri, do you bike on open roads?

Sounds very cool, just way past my bed time.

There is a ride here in town that starts at midnight I think, past my bedtime too, and goes for a couple hours out of downtown and around the inner loop area of town.  Freaking carnage everywhere over the last 5-10 miles.  People falling asleep on bikes, letting thier focus wander, and book crashes.  Not really my cup of tea.  I'd rather see you at 4 AM after a few hours of sleep and a cup of coffee.

Yes we run and ride on open roads. Most of the way it is pretty well lit. One neighborhood was really dark last year and I had to slow way down. Good support at all intersections and felt very safe. We are a pretty small town so traffic is fairly light by 10:00. Yes the late hour killed me. You don't sleep well afterwards and I was dragggin bad the next day due to lack of sleep.

So I might be traveling soon for work, which takes away the option of cycling unless I can do a spin class.  What is a good substitute for cycling?  I will hopefully have a treadmill and a pool . . .

I'm trying to fill in some of my B races too.  There's the Kings Park 15k, a couple of half marathons and more small-town 5k's than you can shake a stick at.  I'm really looking for some good bike rides.  There's a century to Montauk, and a couple of other rides, but I don't have a handle on how to look them up easily.

And try to get your spouses/friends to volunteer for these things.  My wife actually enjoys volunteering and brought up the idea herself.  (Because, personally, I think just watching a race has to be the most boring thing in the world except for the 30 seconds where you see someone you know.)

Honestly can't think of one.

Find a gym and take a spin class.  Hope there is an instructor that doesn't bite.

So true on the boring part and I have 2 kids 4 and under.  Unless we dump them on the in laws, Lord help me, then they're coming with so volunteering is essentially out.

Even if the instructor sucks you can always sit in the back of the class and do your own thing.  Also good is if you can get access to the spin studio in non-class hours and just use the spin bike to do your own thing.

Last time I was on trial I brought my bike and trainer (I'm a huge dork).

Felt so good to finally run outside today, IN SHORTS.  I decided to work from home this afternoon, but not before taking advantage of 55 degrees in February.  4.9 miles, 8:22 pace, 151 HR average, and some really good climbs.

The YMCA by my office has spin bikes with aerobars and bike computers.  It's kinda nice in a pinch really.

Those of you trying to lose weight I really encourage you to take progress pictures.  Even if you feel you look gross.  I took my pic from 2 years ago and put it next to my pic from this morning and feel a TON better about myself.

Now if only I didn't have to work and could train all the time.

true...I took a pic last week of me in my jeans that used to be comfortable and sometimes snug in the waist, I can now take them off without unbuttoning them

Felt GREAT to get outside and ride for the first time this year today! Even if the wind IS blowing hard, it was still fun. And I realized that the few trainer rides I've done so far have helped me a lot. I felt good on the bike and even pushed it pretty fast in some sections (topped out at 35mph, avg 14.1)
