Joy - I personally think you are awesome and a wonderful friend.  It makes a huge difference just knowing that someone is there for you and that was probably a huge reason your friend was able to finish.

Great job!!!

Linda

I agree with you Linda!  I'm sure Joy wanted to kill the race but the mental aptitude to hold back and be with her friend is truly commendable.  =)

I have a weird question.  The lakes here are starting to really warm up and that means the green yuck is starting to mix in with the water.  I am now swimming without the wetsuit since the water temps are in the 80's and it seems like the miniscule green yuck particles syphon down the front of my swimsuit and are a sticky itchy mess down the front when I am done swimming.Frown  Right now I quickly change and try to brush off the yuck with a towel before heading out on a run or bike for a brick, but what do you guys do in an actual race situation?  I have a nice tight fitting speedo to swim in and I am not well endowed in the upper body department so I wouldn't think I'd have this much of a problem.  I don't think it would bother me so much but it is itchy.  Do you just mind over matter ignore it?  Bring a water bottle to transition and do a quick rinse off?

Hope someone else has this problem.  I know Thor doesn't have the yuck problem if the water temps are in the 50 or 60's in the northland.

* Wetsuit maintenance question *

I see that many of us use wetsuits in our training.  Do any of you use wetsuit shampoo to keep them clean after each use?

@Linda -- I think you should try that water bottle rinse option.  I would, being itchy is really distracting to me.

Linda I swim in a bay that's in the high 60's so it's not an issue. Roland I just rise it with the hose at home. If I used it in a pool I would consider getting some wetsuit shampoo to get the chlorine off.

Awesome story Joy.

In a sprint there's no doubt that some people do it who are borderline to swim the quarter to a half mile. However the same thing happens at the next level. At Stamford the first wave was the "elites" and they went off 6 minutes before us and several people were way off course. The next wave went off 4 minutes before we did. I caught several of them before the first buoy and one person about two-thirds of the way to the first buoy. They were struggling so badly I had to resist the urge to help them. I don't know if they finished or not but they were swimming about 4 minutes per hundred.

I have passed several "elites" swimming. I am going to do solely a swimming endurance race one day. I have seen intimidating looking athletes freak out in the water. I am a trained rescue/recovery/lifeguard and it is so difficult to see the signs of struggling swimmers and keep going. I have to give it to folks who have a hard time swimming -- they're trying. It's always been an innate thing for me. Someone told me once that good runners make lousy swimmers -- who knows. At least its the shortest part of the race.

I agree they are to be commended for trying but you have to be smart about these things. If they can't swim to the first buoy........I'm lucky as it comes natural to me as well. I did my first mile swim at 11 years old. I was the youngest at camp that year by 4 years to complete it. They made us do a quarter mile on Monday within the confines of the docks first and if  you grabbed the edge you were out. Then on Wednesday same deal only half mile. The full mile was buoys in the middle of the lake. It took me 45 minutes and I was the last one out of the water but I made it. Point is people need to make sure they can actually make these distances first as to not put themselves in danger.

I used to take dares and bets like - "bet you can't swim to shore if you jumped off the boat here" And, I'd do it. Done it since I was really young as well. I always love to hear before a race "Well, I haven't swam much this year" I always think these people will get pulled out at some point.

Scott Everlong and Charminchick Joy grrrrrrrrrrr, you lucky natural swimmers!  ^_^

You remind me of my cycling and swimming partner who learned to swim when he was 3.  You guys are a great inspiration for me.  I always had this innate fear of being the water and not feeling my feet on the ground.  >.<  I learned freestyle when I was 28 but stopped for a good 8 years.  Got into it again casually 2 years ago and got to the level of swimming a mile about a year ago.  =D  It was a great accomplishment and now I'm learning how to fine tune my freestyle and during the off-season, learn another stroke.

Anyway, my OWS practice proved challenging at the beach last Sunday afternoon.  The waves were so big that I kept getting pushing back even with my new wetsuit.  I couldn't get comfortable so I swam some parallel 10 yards and turned 90 degrees diving below the wave breaks when they got close.  Next chance I get though, I'm gonna go all out against those waves and swim out to a buoy and back.  I hope that gives me a confidence booster as my tris are all having their swims in the beach. =)

Had an awesome run last night.  Being a shorter run (3.6 miles) I warmed up to Z3 the 1st mile and did really great on negative splits.  Felt pretty good at 2.8 miles that I got into Z4 and finished at a 7:51 pace!  Woot!  Surprised

Great job on your run. On swimming when it's choppy, that's a great skill to have but it effects all of us. Ashland was on a lake but the winds were really strong so there was a 6 inch chop which is nothing for the ocean but for a lake it's significant. The final 40% of the race it was really smacking my head on every breath and I had to adjust for it. If some of your events are going to have some major chop it's worth training for it. Mine really don't so I haven't been concerned. Ashland was a lake, Stamford an isolated harbor and NY is on the Hudson so the chop will be limited because of the docks and piers blocking most of it should the winds be high.

4 1/2 sleeps(1/2 for Saturday night, probably a lot  of racing in my head that night...)

Emotions ranging from excited to nervous to let's get this thing done!

My goal is to stay under 3 hours.

Waiting to see how I do on this before booking August 21 race(oly or sprint)!Leaning towards oly as I already have a sprint Sept. 5. We will be camping right at the lake so that will be great.

Leave Friday at lunch. Will be there in time for supper and package pickup!

As a bonus, my 8yr old son may do a kids of steel triathlon the Aug. 20 at same place as mine!

Trust in your training. You're going to crush it.

Let me know how that goes. I'm leaning towards letting my almost 9 year old daughter do one.

It's actually the bike not the swim I'm most concerned with. Our street isn't conducive to bike riding even through it's a side street. There's a sharp corner by my house and it's on a hill and people drive like it's the freeway. So she doesn't get as much bike time as she should. I may consider it though so thanks for the heads up.

She could dive to the bottom of a 12 foot pool and do a handstands or retrieve rings at 4 and a half and she plays soccer with kids two years older and outruns them so those two I have no worry.

Yeah this bike, for the cranberry for her doesn't go on any streets. I believe it's 1-2 miles long and goes through the woods. Running is within the campground, they set up a small transition and then go.  It was actually fun watching them last year.

I'm running just a 5K race on Saturday morning as part of the Lake Festival here. My best time in a Sprint Tri has been 31:47. I am excited to see what happens when I do just a 5k -- haven't done one since November and I was really slow. What should I expect my time to be? A minute or two faster than I do in a Sprint Tri? No really sure where to set my goal.
