First, no one running a 3:22 marathon is a pansy; that some hardcore 'ish right there. Second, those bugs are way too ginourmous and super gross, so it's not you, it's them. But thanks for sharing, Kirsten |

I cunningly decided to enter the Grafman olympic distance on 12th August without actually registering or parting with any money. This was because i was scared concerned that i may not be able to get ready in time for the event and also the idea of having to set off at 4am in time to sign in etc and then be knackered for the race itself. It was also the latest race i could enter before i go on my annual holidays, 5 days later. However, my holidays have now been postponed by a few days, leaving the weekend of 18th/19th August also available as i fly out to Turkey on the Monday. This gives me 3 options and i welcome your thoughts as well as the usual abuse etc. 1. Go for the Grafman Oly on August 12th. It is 2hrs away. Also has HIM event running at the same time 2. Go for the Erewash Sprint Tri on August 19th (pool based) ready for this right now. 3.Go for the Udo's Choice Allerthorpe Classic Triathlon (olympic distance) August 19th. 1 hour away so more user friendly. Also gives me one week extra training. So, comments.... Since I've bailed on my Oly - because I legitimately don't think I'm ready, of course - I would not fault you for doing the same. I hate feeling like I have to cram training in; makes the race not as special, I think. And that extra week of training probably isn't going to make much of a difference, except mentally. I would vote for the sprint, but what are you leaning towards? |

Anyway all is well I did 45mins on the drainer and actually it was fine. Problem was i was so tired before I started, got home from work at 6pm and started on dinner, made a divine Massaman beef curry in the pressure cooker. Homework with Artemis - spellings - we love these, we draw pictures of the words. Then get her bathed and read a story. Then it's 7.30 - hope on the drainer for 45mins, eat dinner, drink a beer. Shower, dry hair and it's now 9.50pm and I'm beat! Tomorrow lunchtime run and swim squad in the evening. Roll on summer. I leave the house in the dark at the moment and come home in the darker! You're a crazy busy and high energy lady ... and remember I GIVE (just not take) excellent advice I think it's essential, during Iron training, to sometimes take a day off to rest more, or even for no good reason. And not to make anything up. Just do it. You are absolutely right - did that Monday! for me it's only vital that I get in the long run and the long ride, anything else is a bonus. Swim squad is like going to the pub - it's social! I will take another rest day pretty soon! |

I do hate that time in winter -- when it is dark until late in the morning and dark before the afternoon is over. I like the idea of drawing pictures of the spelling words. I may have to try that with Jayson. I can't believe he starts school in a month! There are some great ways to make spelling interesting - drawing is our favourite, others include put the word in a sentence, download images from Google, make up a story using all the words. It takes about an hour of my week but it's real quality time and her teacher says we are the only ones who put in that kind of effort and the rewards have been tremendous. She is a grade above where she should be for reading - plus she's a year younger than all the other students as I started her at school as soon as I could! |

Also big thanks for all the book recommendations you have listes - I shall be downloading some of these once i've finished with the grandmother porn - seriously Fifty Shades is not a turn on AT ALL. |

Have you had any injury issues running so much? Wait, scratch that last one. I have trouble fitting it all in cause I run so slow. Guess if I ran fast like you it would get done quicker Well. Ok...I was active in HS and then played a little hockey in college but once I graduated I became, well, quite frankly fat and lazy. With that came some depression and then, I dunno...just a bitterness in life, in general. Finally I woke the eff up and realized I needed to make a change (I'm summarizing here)I also realized there were some things that were completely out of my control (I got dealt a few crappy hands) and there were some things I could control. So, I started working out on a regular basis and started seeing small changes, physically and mentally. Finally I kind of hit a plateau and realized my diet needed some work. No one makes this part easy. There is so much conflicting information out there it's mind boggling. I started logging my food and made and effort to eat non or lightly processed food and just kept researching. Around a year ago, a friend talked me into signing up for triathlon. Of course, she backed out but I went for it. I did a few 5Ks in preparation and realized, with a little training, I could run. I had always hated running but once you start to see what a little training can do in terms of improvement, I started to like it more. Around this time I found BT and started getting into Tri more. I did a few tris and bike rides and runs. I also won entry to this half marathon (the day before) and more or less ran it on a whim. I had been tri training so I wasn't totally unprepared. I got a decent time considering and realized with some actual structured training, I could probably be a pretty decent runner. That is when I started training for my first marathon. I ended up running that first marathon in 3:34 and qualifying for Boston. So, I decided I wanted to dedicate myself to running to see what my true potential is. That is where I am today. Phhhhewwww. In terms of time (training, family, life in general) Well, that is NEVER easy. It's all about prioritizing. I have made a promise to myself that training, for now, doesn't interfere with my family. I am lucky enough to have a gym on site at work and work for a company that values life/work balance. I frequently do 2-a-day workouts (one at lunch and one in the evening) my evening workout is generally with my SO (as the gym. She doesn't run but at least we are at the same place) I have also sneakily drug some of my friends into running, convincing them they love it as much as I do and now instead of happy hour, we run (clever, I know) I have to cut a lot of stuff out too. There are certainly sacrifices. Lots of Sundays when really I just want to sleep in and watch football and instead I have to do a 18-miler. Also, lots of Friday nights where I need to cut out early so I can get some sleep because I have a run in the morning. But, it's all about balance and always will be.

I think his books are always fair and what he is exposing isn't anti-Mormon or even anti religion, it's, in my opinion just exploring their (not Mormon's specifically but a very specific fringe group) ideologies and their justification for murdering in the name of faith. |

So, what did you do before? what made you decide to focus on running? Have you had any injury issues running so much? You seem to get so much training in and yet you still blog about hanging out with friends in the evenings etc--I know you have a SO and furry children--how do you fit it all in? Cool story!!!!!!!!!! Funny, my SIL talked me into a tri. I drank the kool-aid and was hooked, she went back to her "normal" life (and even backed out of the tri we do "together"). |
