A REST DAY!

I slept in, pigged out on a donut at coffee break, and I am going to see the Jets vs New Jersey tonight. I may even get a bucket of popcorn and a coke at the game.

One more week of work then I will be down in sunny, hot, Texas for 3 weeks. I cannot wait.

Jambago - 2013-02-28 11:38 AM A pleasant weather surprise this morning! On a planned LSD run the sun came out, the weather warmed, and I felt good afterward. Couldn't ask for a better morning after an overnight shift at work! I have my first 'ever' HM on 3/23 - hopefully the powers to be (fate) will finally let me get to the starting line. Funny tho, I was able to get the full marathon in before it! Debating to hop on the trainer for a bit this afternoon... yep still debating!

Stop debating and start pedaling!  Wink

Almost felt like a challenge.....DONE! It actually relieved some of the tightness in my legs to boot.

Well we don't have hills here, but we have WIND! Wow, my planned 45 minute, zone 1, 100+ cadence ride last night was rough! The tailwind was nice, but man was it a brutal headwind and unfavorable cross for half the ride. The first 5 miles were mostly into the wind, and took me well over 17 minutes; the second 5 miles was almost all tailwind and only took me 15! Maintaining a high cadence into the headwind meant my speed dropped to 14.5 a couple of times. So I guess I'll just consider that some hill training.

Ken, I do go to Clermont for hill training, and actually my Oly this month and HIM in April are both in Clermont. I usually average just over 20mph in the sprint and Olympic distance tris there because I make up so much time on the downhills--not sure I can do that in the half because it includes some of the "big" climbs (steep Sugarloaf Mountain), but we'll see.

Also, did a 1 mile swim test in masters class this morning. Took me 32:44. Had trouble getting my breathing comfortable for the first half, but by the last 650 or so I felt pretty good and picked up the pace a little. I think I will definitely continue improving and will be right on target to hit a 1:15 swim time at the IM in August. It's a great Friday! Happy training and welcome to the weekend, all!

rquinn23 - 2013-02-28 12:05 PM Hills--something we don't have much of in Central Florida! I actually like biking and running hills, but have never been anywhere with long, steady climbs. Hills here are typically short and steep, or not very steep but just rolling. I am slow on biking up hills, but LOVE the downhills! Last week I watched a video of the IM Louisville bike course, and now I'm nervous, because it is much hillier than I anticipated. Hopefully I can gain time on the downhills, because I tend to fly by people on those. And I hope I can remain calm on the uphills and listen to everyone's advice about not overdoing it on the bike to the detriment of the run. Weather--I really am amazed at all of you who live in cold areas and the dedication you have to getting workouts done indoors. I just don't think I could do it! Granted, come mid-May, I'll likely have quite a few indoor bike workouts because of the daily afternoon storms here, but until then, I am happy getting outside for most of my workouts. QUESTION: I am trying to figure out what I'm going to wear in my IM. It's not until August, but I want to figure it out early so I can test everything in training or a shorter tri. I have a one piece trisuit that I wore in my HIM. I also have a two-piece setup that I've worn in shorter tris. I am leaning towards wearing the same thing through all swim-bike-run (I have read about some people changing clothes, but I don't think I want to do that). I will change socks (for HIM or shorter I do not wear socks, but I'm going to for the full, for both the bike and run segments). I am undecided on a swim skin--I don't know enough about them and whether it's worth getting one. From what I've read, they really only benefit faster swimmers. Although my swim is improving drastically, I still won't ever be a "fast" swimmer--I'll be happy to make it into the top half of my age group rather than coming in at the bottom. So what advice/experiences do you have? One piece? Two piece? Swim skin? (No wetsuit for this one, so that's not a worry.) I'm also wondering a bit about peeing on the bike and run...maybe that's an entirely different subject for a later time? :-)

Becky,

Sometimes I actually welcome the cold weather.  While it's nice to be outside, I don't get the "quality" of workout in that I do on the trainer or treadmill or pool inside.  So come winter, it's a good change to focus on quality.  I've come out of every winter so far sooooo much stronger than I was in summer.

Take this with a grain of salt, cuz I've never gone 140.6!   Plus, I'm not a girl!   In 70.3 I like the two piece.  Yes, because of the possibility to have to use the fascilities.  But, also I'm much more comfortable in the 2 piece.  For me I like cycling bibs.  The only bibs that work for tri's without feeling like a diaper is the DeSoto 400 mile bibs.  They have shorts too if you prefer shorts.  To me, these have the extra padding I enjoy on the bike yet I have no issue running in them.

A lot of pro triathletes have switched a lot of their training, especially on the bike, to the trainer for the reason you mention.  The quality and repeatability of the trainer is much better than the road.  Add in the safety factor of dealing with the increasingly growing number of distracted drivers and it becomes quite appealing.  I think you always need to get some time outside to keep up the handling skills, but the legs definitely benefit being inside.

The threads about the trainer and not being able to stand it I understand to some degree.  But if you take a little time to improve the environment with some entertainment and a fan, it becomes much more tolerable.

This year I am spending more time on the trainer because of the weather and have come to enjoy it. Mainly because I feel that I can focus the work better than I can outside since there are no stop signs or traffic. One trick that has helped me is to wear a good set of head phone to listen to whatever is I am watching. This helps me feel like I am in the TV. I also only watch cycling related content so I don't loose focus on the task at hand.

Becky, wind is my hills here for the most part.  I live just outside the Windy City, Chicago!  There are plenty of days we ride in 30+ mph wind gusts.  It can be brutal!  I remember several times pedalling at 300w into a headwind on a completely flat road going 12mph!!!  It's crazy sometimes.  There are some hills here, but far and few between.  Most are short steep climbs.  But you have to travel to find them.

I had a great week so far.  My coach analyzed last weekends run TT and said I made new threshold values on it.  Not sure how that happened with the limited run volume...but hey!   Last night at masters we did some races.  I wasn't expecting much because I've gone off the blocks a total of 3x in my life! lol  I ended up putting down a solid 1:14 100'.  Definitely not the fastest as there were guys sub 1:00 in my masters group.  But they were pure swimmers and race competitively.  I was right up there with the faster triathlon guys with my time.  It was the first time I've ever clocked 100' so I'm sure if I did it more and tweaked my entry and flip turns to be more efficient I could shave a good amount of time off of that even.  But no need since I'm a triathlete!

A new month!  Good month overall for me!  I didn't miss a scheduled workout, although I only get one swim a week scheduled with the instruction to swim as often as I like beyond that.  My weight is the lowest it has been since 10th grade, which was a very long time ago! Embarassed

March's goal is to just keep doing the same!  Going to be a bit challenging since I have more travels coming up this month, but will do my best.  I need to get most of the rest of the weight off this month before the training volume really picks up.

You guys are all doing great!  Any goals you want to discuss for March?

TGIF!!  Train well this weekend!!

I need to get down to 163lbs or close!  We are picking up intensity and adding carbs back to the diet.  But I need to watch calories and quality!  I want the rest of this weight gone!  I'm sitting at 8.8% body fat right now.  Getting to 163 puts me in the low end of the range Matt Fitzgerald charted in Racing Weight for optimization.  From that point my focus is on power.  I'd like to put down 260+ real FTP.  Not a Critical Power number.  I think that will get me to a good point to go train in the Mountains in April and then lay down a fast time in Xterra Ft Custer, and then Kansas 70.3.

My goal is to increase my running miles and stay consistent with the bike. February was not a bad month compared to January but could have been better.

I would like to get that low, and maybe I can sitting at 176 this morning.  My BF% is a lot higher though, struggling to get it into the teens.  So, that means I have a lot more to lose to get to fighting weight.

Great work though Brian!

Nice work on the weight and consistency Ken! You are a rock in terms of getting it done!

For March, I just want to survive... If I can get a little more biking and swimming in, great, but I have to take it as it comes or risk losing sanity...

This week is going okay. Today was my first run where I wasn't feeling the pain from Sunday's race and it boosted confidence some. This Sunday's long run has 12 miles at "marathon pace" which should give me some idea if I'm kidding myself about what my May goal time should be.

And if the weather agrees, I'll get to tool around on rhe new bike!

February was a good month for me and fairly evenly distributed among swim/bike/run - 4th highest in volume ever and considering the month is short I am happy with that. I did miss a few workouts but I did get all the long workouts in. Have less than 2 pounds to go from my high school weight (unfortunately spring break is next week).

Unfortunately, my workout for today was shortened due to a pool closure during my swim - apparently there wasn't enough chlorine in the pool. I am not sure how much training I will get in this weekend as we are watching the Iditarod tomorrow and the Tour of Anchorage ski race on Sunday.

Happy Friday All!

Just increasing my bike fitness and endurance for the upcoming Centuries! 4 of 'em!!

Next week I'll be in Moab for Skinny Tire Festival. Night rides starts next week, so I'm looking forward to that, however, I'll have to somehow get my trainer training in as well. I have decided not to do the Down Syndrome ride as I feel doing a Century in town with the same roads that I ride on all the time is kind of boring after a while. Decided to do Zion Century instead, should be beautiful!

So far, all my Century Rides will be out of state (4 of them) and I figure that I'll get better enjoyment out of a doing a Century out of Las Vegas vs. Centuries in town. So, that means I'll be sacrificing some of the rides that I've been wanting to do. I'm alright with that. :D

On top of bike fitness, I'm hoping to get started with cross training by doing a few 1-2 miles runs a week, work on leg strengths.

How did it get to be March already???

I'm trying to get back on the horse after a week of vacation.  Headed out of town next week again, but this time for the Skinny Tire Festival, so at least I know I'll get my bike time done.  DJ, we should try to meet up!

Still, I felt good on my hill run this morning (5 days after my half marathon) and felt good in the pool after my week away.  Now if only I didn't have to make up all these shifts...Enjoy your weekend everyone, I'm jealous.

Well, I didn't make all my workouts this month, but looking at the months totals - although I have done a little less time in biking and running (and a little more in swimming) than Jan I have gone further in all 3 disciplines, which I'm v happy with.

I would like to loose weight in March I think. And I have a challenge - we've booked to go to Barcelona for 5 days (yippee) so I'll be able to run, and I've already looked up where the pools are - and there's the sea, I think I'll have to forgo biking unfortunately. I bet it'll be fabulous though.

Well done to everyone else on their achievements - and so early in the season ..I remain in awe of the rest of you.

Jennifer

Everyone is doing great so far!!  Keep up the great work!

I got my long run in early yesterday on the treadmill as I had to be on the road by 7 for some meetings a couple hours drive away.

Long bike ride on the trainer this morning, along with some strength work.

Any topics we want to discuss?

How about something non-triathlon related? Hobbies aside from triathlons, a little unknown fact about yourself, or pets! I'll start.

Hobbies - I have a tendency to switch hobbies from time to time. Currently, its Nanoblocks. I try not to go super crazy so I don't get bored. Nanoblocks is micro-sized LEGO. Lots of fun and tedious.

Unknown fact - I can push my thumbs to my wrists. I've been a fan of Reba McEntire for 22 years. I used to love the color pink until I went to college and a friend that hates pink insulted me with my color choice of items and bedding, so I switched to purple. I can clip all 5 of my cats nails under 10 mins...that's 70 claws to be cut!

Pets - Good Lord, I got a bunch. 5 cats and a dog. My oldest cat is 13 going on 14. She is starting to have problems (for 13 years of her life, I've had NO problems with her and she never got sick), with food sensitivity. The vet thinks she has IBS. So I switched her food to Blue Wilderness Duck, Salmon or Turkey wet and hopefully that will help her stomach feel better and gain weight. We are treating conservatively without going super crazy with invasive procedures (she doesn't vomit on a daily basis, just a flare up). The other cats is also getting the same diet for the dry for convience sake (they nom throughout the day) On top of this, we are working on getting a bearded dragon tank set up. We've always wanted to have a reptile/herps set-up. Anyone here have experience? We do have plans in the future to get fish.

Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED
Hey DJ. I had a water dragon and have had frogs and geckos at different points in time. LMK if you have any questions. Also, my wife Anne deals a lot with the cat stuff at work. We've gone through the same situation with my moms cat too. If you'd like to talk to Anne LMK. I can get her on here to PM you or set you up with her cell phone to text her. I'm sure she wouldn't mind and may be able to give you ideas of things to try.

Other hobbies..... I love fast cars and motorcycles although currently I have none. But that doesn't mean that wont change soon! . I used to race motorcycles and have had a fun car for summer at one point in time. I am also into shooting. I love shooting trap, 3 gun, and pistol competitions. Although, I haven't done any competitions since I started tris. No time! I usually just go shoot for fun now. I'm in the process of building a fun AR15 before we get a ban! I also enjoy building and flying RC model airplanes. Animals you say? I never really wanted them, but my wife is a veterinary technician and owns a pet sitting business. She's worked for humain societies, and somehow we ended up with 2 dogs and a cat. Our lowest head count ever! Even though I wasn't into it when she got them they really have become family and I wouldn't give them up for the world.
