geauxtri - 2009-04-10 8:20 PM BTW... for all the gardners out there...
I'm excited today... my grandfather's heirloom tomatos germinated today (well two of the six I planted)  It's kind of bitter sweet... my grandfather passed away two and half years ago... when leaving his house for the last time, his girlfriend gave me a handkerchief of his with some seeds wrapped in it.  My grandfather was ALWAYS known as the Tomato Man, raising the best plants and tomatos in all of town.  He hadn't bought a seed since the early '80's.

That is really cool!  Tomatoes from your grandfather.  Isn't amazing how they continue to reach out to us after they are gone?

x2

I have started collecting seeds from cool plants. The latest seeds were shaken out of cones that I plucked from a Contorted Larch.  I park next to it at school every day.  I am going to get little bitty glass jars for all the different kinds of seeds I collect.  The jars are hex shaped, 1.5 inches wide and 2 inches high.  I think that they are really fun.

It is so fun to hear what other people really enjoy and like.  We are all so different which helps keep life fun and interesting.

Hello Nibbs, I'm sitting here in our basement.  We are in the middle of a Tornado warning and severe thunderstorms.  We can hear the hail hitting the house.  The cats are freaking out.  Life is fun!

look on the bright side... at least you still have internet and access to BT.

I am currently hiding in the attic...I am not allowing myself to come down until I have taken care of some stuff...mainly bills and school work.

I have major gardening distraction issues (just look at my log) and I know that I can't wander outside when I am up in the attic

20 hours of yardwork in a week...
Can there possibly be anything left to be done????
you would be amazed at how much I have to do.  One day was at my client's house.   Isn't that fun to say.

You have a client.  Yahoo.  That means a paying job.  And in a field that you enjoy.

I thought you were working for a landscape company?
I had considered it, but I didn't have time.  It was going to be a lot of manual labor (he specialized in hardscaping).  Not something that I would want to do long term, but it would be fun to spend a season working for him and learn the techniques.

Spring and Summer quarter are focused on landscape design.  We need to have a real client that we will be working with for the duration.  A gal from my church approached me a couple months ago about working with her mother.   I spent an afternoon over there last weekend.  It is a great property to work with...it is on a greenbelt and the backyard transitions into a forested area.  There are lots on neat native plants just outside of the semi-maintained yard.

I have seen the first half of the movie.  mostly funny with a little bit of sad.  I have held off on watching the entire movie.  Everyone says that it is so sad...I haven't been in the mood for a tea-jerker.

Yeah, the book made me cry too, but it was a good cry because you knew Marley was so loved and had a wonderful life.

Me too.  I made a choice a while back to focus on things that make me happy and to find the good in things.  it sure is a lot nicer than finding the negatives.  Positive thoughts rule.

I gotta run, but first...just for fun here is part of the letter that gives the client an idea of what the landscape design project will be like...
Landscape Design is taught during Spring Quarter from early April through the third week of June. Each student in the class works with a client to develop a design for their property. It takes the entire 3 months to complete the project, with several interactions between client and student. These are some of the steps involved (items marked with * require your participation):

  • *Agreement to work together – needs to be mutual
  • *Determine goals – involves interview and written survey
  • Analyze site – student needs access to property
  • Measure site – student needs access to property (often several times)
  • Draw base plan – student’s responsibility
  • Develop at least two options to meet client’s goals – student’s responsibility
  • *Present options to client and receive comments
  • Complete landscape design – student’s responsibility
  • *Present landscape design to client

During July the student will complete a folder of information for the client that gives phenology (plant colors present through the year), cost to install, and recommendations for soil preparation, materials sources, etc.

The student’s assignment does not include installation. If you want the student to install the design, you’ll need to hire them to complete that for you. Otherwise the design is yours to use as you like.

Students are required to complete a design that addresses public, private, and service areas. If your need is focused on only one of these areas, the student may choose to work with you, but will have to draw a design for the entire property around the house, not just the area of interest.

Hi there Nibbleteers

I am enjoying blue skies and sun again.  Yay!!! Now I just need to remember the sunscreen.

I decided to revive my blog.  With a title change and a new purpose maybe I will actually post now and then.  I couldn't let my little sister out do me.  She has one that is dedicated to her garden...mostly the veggies.  She is a photographer and puts up great pictures.

It is going to be focused on the horticultural portion of my life.  There is not much now, but I am hoping to put in some time this evening to add content.

BTW...I put a link in my log.
