mdfahy - 2010-06-15 9:12 AM I bought a bike trainer today, I wasn't brave enough to try rollers like Warren though.  I also signed up for B2B HIM, my running buddy signed up for it with me.  He sucked me into running races and now I am pulling him into tris!

You will like the trainer. Did you get the stand for the front wheel? It helps me with stability. Also - based on my experience, little bits of rubber, etc. will fly off the back wheel making an interesting "spray" pattern on the wall behind the back wheel (if you are close to a wall...)

I have the cadence sensor from Garmin - which has been really nice for figuring out what cadence I need to keep up for a particular zone.

Glad to hear about B2B - it's one I have in the back of my head for the full distance in a few years. You'll have to give us the details!

Wont happen with a trainer tire. I used a blue TACX trainer tire for over 3000miles. Currently on some other brand.

Any advice on groin pain?

I think I pushed too hard on some strides this week that was the main aggitator, on top of hills both running and biking, increase/ramping back up in training and not enough stretching.

I took a couple advils this morning, and tried to keep legs elevated last night.  I guess I should ice it down this evening too is what I've read.  Online advices says to use the R.I.C.E. treatment method. Rest, ice, compression and elevation are the best immediate treatment for pulls and strains.

Really stinks because I was getting really psyched for my sprint next weekend.

Matt, RICE is my method. You've got a good time to taper. Hopefully it's just a strain and you'll be back on track for the race. Fingers crossed for you.

Matt - sorry to hear about the injury...x3 on RICE. It works.

Warren's got a Sprint this weekend - should be HOT! (It's really warm for those of us in NE - supposed to be in the mid 80s all weekend - which is really warm for us) Have a great race!

Oh my.  I just ran 7 miles in 95 degrees.  I wouldn't know what to do with mid 80's right now.  I went on a business trip to Chicago yesterday with my wife.  It was in the mid 80's and we thought it was rather cool.  When the sun started setting we were regretting not having packed a jacket.  Have a great race Warren.

Thanks Ray.
Jennifer's right, my body is used to cool weather, so hopefully I'll be alright.  Last night's run was 58 and drizzly.  My rides are typically still in a jacket - often in the high 40s low 50s when I start.  I'd die if I ran with you!  I heard the lake was 64 this morning, so no problem with using the wetsuit.

I had a most interesting race.  59/181 total, 11/18 AG.  The swim was brutal but not for the reason I thought it would be.  My time was actually about goal time, so I can't complain much about the swim.  There was pretty good pile up at 200 yards, and about 5 of us spent about 50 yards hammering each other quite a bit, not on purpose but it just worked out that way.  That went fine, it was actually fun in a way.  But then about 50 yards after it broke up, I just lost it.  It was like I'd never swam in my life.  Couldn't breath, couldn't stroke, total brain cramp.  I struggled in and don't really know what happened or why.  Oh well, I guess I'll do more long uninterrupted swims and see how that goes.

The bike was very hard but also very fun, pretty much exactly what I thought it would be.  The roads were perfect since they were newly paved.  It was essentially an out and back, uphill most of the way out and downhill back, with some very steep inclines.  I love that kind of ride and did pretty well I thought.

The run was weird.  It was a trail run with some parts on the beach.  The trail was very rocky and rooty and lots of holes and such.  Maybe all trails are like that - I've done no trail running.  Due to a previous history of ankle issues and this not being a big race for me and not wanting to cause a problem which would keep me off my feet for a while, I was very cautious, to the point of walking at times especially down some pretty steep inclines.  As a result, I wasn't really gassed at the end of the run which was a bit disappointing.  Anyway, I finished the run in 28:10.  There must be a secret to it as some others were cruising fairly quickly running the whole thing.  No one went too fast though - I think the top 5k time was 21:04.

I actually racked my bike after the run and ran a mile at 8:00 pace just to make sure I actually had what I thought in the tank.

My son did great, he finished his tri with a huge sprint for the last 200 yards and a big smile.  And carrying his sneakers.  He loves to run barefoot but the RD encouraged him to use shoes as he thought the pavement would be too hot.  But Z decided halfway through to strip the shoes and do it his way.  He does have tough feet.  Maybe he'll start a barefoot thread on here someday - that would be entertaining.

I'll do a full race report tomorrow or Monday.  Thanks for all the support and inspires, it was great fun and again learned a lot.  Back to training because I'm obviously still very much a MOP/BOP.

Looking at this email, maybe this IS the race report!  I warned you all early on I talk a lot!

Great job inspiring your kids Warren! I hope it was fun. I'm with your son - running a trail in barefeet sounds nice. Especially on a hot day.

And a special thanks to all you fathers out there! Have a great day.

Oh, and Warren, 01m 56s /100 yards is a pretty solid swim, especially with all the battling you did out there.  No wonder you were out of breath at the end!!!

Race report is up.  Probably less graphic than my post!

The bad news is more adversity hit yesterday.  I broke the toe right next to my big toe.  Doc says no big deal since it's just the very end, and shouldn't affect alignment or anything.  I'm cleared to train as pain tolerates after another day of RICE.  Looks worse than it is, but it hurts quite a bit to walk today.

Congrats to Warren and Aaron on solid performances this weekend.

I'm sorry to hear about your toe though Warren, that doesn't sound like any fun.

Stay healthy everyone, it is no fun on the sidelines.

Looks like my race on Sunday will be no wetsuits.  It'll be my first ever OWS without my wetsuit and it makes me a little nervous to not have my "security blanket".
Oh well, guess I'll just have to get over it  Wink

Bill - I completely understand what you mean about the "security blanket" of the wetsuit. The first time I swam with one - I realized that I couldn't sink - it wouldn't let me. That helped a lot for my confidence. Now - after training on swim this last winter, when I got into the local pond, I felt much stronger and more secure in the water - without the wetsuit.

You have been training, and training well...the wetsuit would be nice - but the distance you need to swim - you can swim. You will do great!

I just swam my first non-stop mile!  After the swimming trials I had Saturday in the race I decided to try swimming some longer sets to get more confident with swimming non-stop.  I had only planned a 1000 yd swim, but it felt great so I kept going.  I'm beginning to think I can do this!

Warren - that's awesome about your son tri'ing with you and about your 1 mile swim.  I am starting to feel like this training stuff really does work.  It just takes too blasted long.  Keep plugging away.  You'll be posting soon about your first 2 mile non stop swim.Wink

Woot! That's fantastic! I am so glad to hear that (and with a broken toe). I'm with Ray - next we'll be hearing about your 2 mile non-stop swim.

Question for the group - is it possible to have a sinus allergy to pool water? I am having some challenges with my sinuses after swimming and am guessing it might be related to the chemicals they use in the water...I thought it was seasonal allergies (we have had an exceptionally high pollen count this year), but had a pretty severe reaction after my last swim...have you all heard of such a thing? Any suggestions on how to deal with it? Because of the weather here - if it is insurmountable, that will force me to only be able to swim in open water for about 4 months a year...which I don't like at all. Hoping you may have some insight.
