calimavs - 2010-05-11 10:28 AM Hi guys - sorry about the bad weather this week! We had some bad rain yesterday and it has been unseasonably cold for San Francisco in May, so I'm hoping it starts to warm up as the week progresses.

This morning I went for the first time and swam before work. I used to totally be a morning person but over the last 5 years I have been getting lazier and lazier in the mornings and now usually get up around 7. I decided it's time to break that habit since I need to start swimming in the morning due to my pool's schedule. I was in the water at 5:55, out by 6:45 and had a great swim.

My coach has us doing time trials (usually 1200-1500 yards broken up into 3x400 or 3x500s) every few weeks to track our progress. Back in March I was at 2:15/100 average and this morning I was at 2:01/100 average. I'm super excited! Swimming in my strength and it's nice to see if I put some effort in the pool I am able to see big improvements. My goal for the next time trial is to break the 2:00/100 barrier.

Congratulations. This is what I think is the coolest thing about training is seeing the progress. Not only in speed but in efficiency and weight loss (for some of us). I think keeping logs is also a very important thing so you can chart your progress. I can't wait to look back in a year and see how far I've come.

I continue the journey I call "The Run". I'm just plugging away at it and did another 3 1/4 miles tonight. I finally broke the 5mph avg barrier tonight. I'm so close to being able to run the whole thing. I think in a week or so I'll be there and then I'll work on that distance for about a month or so. Over the summer I have to increase my distance to be able to complete the 1/2 marathon in the 1/2 IM in Oct. I'll probably get one more run in either tomorrow or Thur and then stop until my sprint on Sunday. I can see my work paying off.

GREAT!  Are you doing LOTS and LOTS of drill work to get there??  Efficiency is key to swimming. Keep up the great work!

One thing I've done for swim training has been 100s done as Easy/Build/Easy/Hard by 25s.  I personally think it's excellent training to do a set of 100s like that, plus pace work (a couple 100s focusing on hitting the same pace) on top of long swims.

=)

My training has been so hugely derailed by pulled/strained/torn ab muscles.. Although with the time off I haven't become faster or stronger I think eventually I'll come to realize that I'm a better athlete because of the experience.  This whole IM journey will make me a better person, athlete, coach, etc in the long run and I'm very thankful for it.  All that training in patience and perseverance!

I've "rested" for a week...taken it easy when I do something physical and slept.  A lot.

I'd like to start getting back into training on Monday and when I do I will know to be very, very, very careful!!!!

Kathleen, that's INSANE!!!!!!!!!!

It's 43* here in Binghamton, NY. Boo! I have a tri outside next weekend.  Luckily, it'll be 79* the Friday before the race, so I hope it will warm up the lake but not be TOO hot for the run! I will MELT!

Fred sorry you're sick.  I notice a correlation (not saying it's definitely causation) between you saying you may have been overdue for some rest/recovery and now being sick.  As far as non-serious sicknesses go, however, IMHO there's nuthin worse than the stomach bug... so I feel for ya.  Take advantage of the forced rest, and come back strong.

Or maybe your body is just letting you know what your 40's are gonna be like Innocent

Injuries, snow, sickness. This group is starting to fall apart. I can't believe how much we've aged in just a few short weeks. What will the future bring. I'm guessing the real life version of the movie "Red Dawn" might be in our future.

Heh. Truthfully, I almost never do drills even though I know I should. I was a competitive swimmer as a kid so I have pretty good form and have really just been doing the bare minimum with swimming this past year to get through my races as I work mostly on my biking and running.

That is changing now as I'm trying to put in a more concerted effort in the pool. I think I'm going to start working some drills into my swimming but I also think I'm seeing improvements from just swimming MORE and re-building those swimming muscles which haven't been used much in ~15 years.

I myself am now sidelined for a little bit. As i wzs doing my long run last night at mile 6 i just totally lost it. Pace declined, body just began to hurt (groin and shins). Unfort i was 6 miles from home...so i had to do the death march/run back. Today i am feeling it. Pain in my groin this morning. Frustrated at myself...
Side note: I just registered for Oceanside 70.3 for 2011. SO FAR AWAY...but i am excited

Just keep at it and go at your pace...keep at your plan and don't deviate.   Back in my USMC days when I was very fast,  I did nothing but long runs, didn't care about my times, my idea of speedwork was going up a hill.   I just did it for so long when I actualy cut loose I noticed, 'hey, I'm pretty fast'.

Good luck in O'Side (I used to live there) next year.  I doubt it will but if registration is up for awhile I may just sign up for that one as well.
