slornow - 2011-08-12 2:06 PM Friday! Hope everyone is doing well.

Looks like we have 2 racers this weekend:

Speedy Karla on her new bike passing people like there is no tomorrow and Christy in the sequel to "Escape from West Virginia.....running from the hills"

Good luck Ladies!

What's everyone else doing?

Randy

LOL! I only hope to be speedy on the bike! Since it's a Duathalon I just have to make the best of it

It seems like our group is down to about 5 of us. Anyone have any races left this year? After Sunday I have one more in October.

For those of you who have done Half Marathon's....

Is 4 months enough time to train? I'm thinking about doing one, it's December 11th, but me being the non-runner I am, would I be setting mself up for failure?

My trainer kind of him-hawed about it, she said I could but it will take tremendous determination and a min of 3 days/week of running.

thoughts?

I think 4 months is plenty of time.  It's not like you've been sitting on the couch for the last few months.  I'm thinking about doing one in October.  I'm using a 12 week plan.  I run (should run) 5/6 times a week.

See, that's why it surprised me when she said I may not be ready. I don't think she was being pessimistic or anything, just realistic. I'm currently running 2 days a week, short runs, but it's something. I'll just have to start meeting up with my runner girls who run 4-6 miles twice a week.

What plan are you using if oyu don't mind me asking?

I'm just using Hal Higdon's Advanced plan.  The only reason I picked the advanced is because there is hill training and the course I'm thinking about doing is hilly.

Absolutely enough time!  You have already established a good base level of fitness and you can build on that.  I would STRONGLY recommend following a specific plan to prepare.  The Higdon plans are good and there are different levels for each distance so there should be one to fit your goals.

Joe had previously mentioned a 3-2-1 plan which calls for running 6 times a week.  Might be more frequency than you want but basically you pick a base time amount or distance.....lets say 20 minutes.  You run 20 minutes 3x during the week; 40 minutes twice and 60 minutes once.  The benefit of this type of plan is it gradually builds fatigue resistance in your legs.  Start with easy and add a little every week or two.

Regardless, pick a plan you feel you can follow and go for it.  I have done 2 half marathons and really like the distance.  Not as painful as 5k or 10k and not the long drag of a marathon.  I have no doubt that you can do it!

Um, Randy, I think you might be a little confused. 5K and 10K are easy peasy! When I did the 10-miler in may my kneecaps felt they were going to pop off my legs. It was PAIN! Firey, sharp, terrible pain! And now I'm training for a half. Geez, there is something wrong with me, lol.

Karla, I am training for a half marathon on October 23 in St. Louis (the St. Louis Rock and Roll). This is my third attempt at a half. I have gotten injured the other 2 times from overtraining so I never even got to the starting line. But, knowing what I know now, I was severely ignoring the strength part of it and foam rolling and all the other important parts of training. I was just kind of running, and I didn't have the strength to support my goals.

Now, I am using the Hal Higdon novice plan, and only running 3 days per week because my body needs more recovery time (according to my doc). Cross training 2 days per week, 1 complete rest day, 2 strength days.

Just curious, why aren't you starting with a 10K or even a 10-miler before attempting a half? I was talking with someone who had never raced before and was doing a half-marathon as his first distance. Seems kind of crazy to me, like attempting a half-ironman without ever doing a sprint distance or Olympic. (But I guess some people do that.)

Thanks Randy! I think I'm going to follow the Higdon plan and see what happens

Now Nicole, do we ever do anything easy?! lol! I've been talked in to doing this race, it's the same event as the Tri Girl, it's just called Run Girl. It's women only and it's just for fun. If I don't run the whole thing, I'm ok with that, it's just something else to add to my 'resume' of races I did a 10K in 2004, and I've done a few 5K's in the past. A half marathon is just something else people can look at me and say: yeah, right, you can't do it... and I can prove them wrong.

It looks like my tri could turn into a du.  It is pouring down rain.  Forcast calls for thunder storms all day tomorrow. I've also heard that the rain causes run off that makes the water unsafe.  I REALLY don't want to run bike run in the pouring rain.  I haven't trained for this race.  My plan was to do it to have fun.  It's not sounding fun anymore

Sorry to be a baby.

That's right!  You can't swim because there's no water.  Totally sucks.  But you'll do great!!

thanks Randy! The bike was good, I improved slightly, but there was a strong headwind both directions, and a few unexpected hills! There is also something going on when I pedal, some strange noise I hadn't heard before, so I was freaking out a little during the entire bike. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet (my rear is glued to my recliner right now!)

My race was wet, wet, wet!  And not just he swim!  We had a 40 min delay because of thunder.  It poured.  But, the entire time I was on the course it wasn't raining.  As soon as I finished the sky opened up again.  I'm not sure about my time.  I didn't wear a watch.  I think it was around 1:27 from what I saw of the prelim. results.  The bike went from 15 miles to 11 miles because part of the course was flooded.  I'll write a race report when I get my times.

Hey all,

Sorry I have been away from the group for the last week or so. I am in the midst of my training for my HIM (September 25th) and I have an Oly (August 28th). I am really excited. Knocked out a 2 hr ride this morning, and had a friend going for a run (very strong runner, training for a Half-marathon in October) and being that i never get to run with anyone, and the fact he is a really good friend I said yet. He did 8, I did around 6.5 mainly because my legs were really heavy today (even on the bike this AM), I had a good first half of the run, but really was struggling, I walked for a block and turned back around and finally found my pace. It felt good, and was glad to get a solid run in after a decent ride this AM.

Yesterday, my club (Hammerhead Triathlon Club) held their Ocean Marathon (1.25 mile ocean swim or 2.5 mile swim), it was a great experience to volunteer. I was an 'escort' and made sure that everyone was doing ok. Being that I was on my stand up paddleboard, I got a decent workout as well since I paddled from the finish line to the short-race start, and paddled back and forth with the pack as they progressed towards the finish line. Felt really good for my core and cross-training for swimming.

Keep up the good training everyone...I can't believe I am closing in on my final weeks of HIM training.

Karla and Christy - GREAT JOB on finishing! Hooray!

Nick - Welcome back!!!!

Went to my brother's house to see my (infant) nephew and to check out a new path for long runs, one that's crushed limestone. I was very excited about it. So excited that I forgot my shoes. I am a size 9.5. My sister in law is a size 6. We made some phone calls and found a local friend who happened to have my exact size shoe. So, I did my 'long' run in someone else's shoes about 2 hours later than I planned to. And it went fine! I'm amazed. Plus I got some MAJOR nephew time. All in all, a good workout running 4 miles in someone else's shoes.

Good morning-for all of you looking at Fall/Winter half marathons there were several articles and plans in the August edition of Runners World.

Kids started back to school today. Son is a HS senior, and daughter a HS junior.  Where did the Summer go....where did the last 10 years go????
