I'll be going to the pool on Tuesday and Thursday.  Looking for an additional day since it's low inpact.  Yes I found a track on base and I am looking for an indoor one as well for the cold months.  I ran but was far from aerobic and I somehow went fast each mile.....  I have the workout posted.  It was Sat.  I ran this morning as well.  I ran my usually coarse and walked the hills to stay aerobic.  I also went for a bike this evening.  The route starts uphill with a 7% incline that goes up to 10%.  The flip side of that is the 3 mile downhill.  My max speed was 40mph today but we were stopped by a traffic.  You can see the route.  It was slow going but I did it!!  Tomorrow back in the pool and stairs!

So I thought I'd shake things up a bit and flew into DC yesterday, just 30 min after the earthquake!  We landed with no problems but the subway was very slow.  Managed to get a long run in.  The cooler temperatures are great! 68 days straight of over 100 degrees was enough for me.  Austin set a record today with it's 70th straight over 100 degrees day.

Good luck to all of you who are racing this weekend.  Can't wait to see all of those exciting race reports.  Remember we are all winners because we are off the couch and doing something to ward off heart disease, diabetes and cancer!

I saw your workouts. Wow, 1:40 for a mile downhill must be fun! I don't think I've ever gone that fast but then there's nowhere to go downhill in here, pretty flat.

You should probably start doing some ocasional anaerobic stuff at the track, maybe some 200M repeats (half lap) with the other half recovery, you can even walk on that one. You're in the right place to get fitter, the culture of the town is based on that and it happens to be the mecca of triathletes too.

So, I've been riding my new black beauty, I posted a picture in my album so you can see. She's fast, lusty and responsive. I may start doing some cycling racing to unleash her. This week is pretty normal but next one I'll be out of town in Waco, working long hours.

I will really try to squeeze some workouts in, we'll see. I also signed up for the Dallas White Rock Half Marathon on December 4th (I may switch up to the full if I'm able to train more) and signed up for the last Half Ironman of the year on November 5th in Montgomery, TX.

I need to get my butt back in the pool too...

Chris, Barry, Gabe, Mark, what are you guys up to?

Chris, Barry, Gabe, Mark, what are you guys up to?

I have a sprint tri on Saturday which I haven't trained or tapered for. But this was my first tri last year, so I know the routine. (And the routine kind of sucks. I have to show up between 6 and 6:30 AM to set up. The transition area closes at 7 for a mandatory prerace meeting and doesn't reopen. And then I wait 105 minutes for my wave to go off. First the 111 k's go off, then the olympics in waves, and then the sprints in waves and I'm in the second to last wave. Yeah, yeah. b1tch, b1tch, b1tch.)

I just finished running my weekly marathon pace run (9 miles at 7:50). I will take it a little easy tomorrow (just run 3 miles) and maybe try to get a few miles on the bike in and practice a few transitions. On Sunday I have a 16 mile run at 8:50. That should be fun. (not).

Hey Ernesto, glad to hear you are enjoying your new toy!

I'm running the Guatemala City 1/2 Marathon this Sunday, which is a fun race with 10K participants.  This was my 1st race 1 yr ago, for which I trained only 1 month, so I'm looking to set a new PR.  I'm then looking to increase my running mileage rapidly to prepare for the Chicago Marathon on October.

Good luck to everyone in their events/training this weekend!

I understand MACCA is doing that race, try to see that dude, he's just amazing. Go with the plan of having fun because your bike and swim are simply not there.

The rest should play out pretty cool. Your running is superb, comparing your HR a few months ago with now is like two different people.

Nice track workout Gabe!! don't forget to taper, you probably have a lot of fatigue leftover from Ironmaya. It is better to be rested than overtrained (and you're very fit at this point anyway).

Have you decided on New Orleans? Fun, fun race...

I'm signing up for Ironman Boise 70.3 too, very nice race I've heard.

Heck, given my start time, he might be finished before I start! (And he is doing the 111k).

Nice Ride Ernesto. I'm jealous! I'll do 30 minutes easy on the bike today and then that's it until the tri on Sunday. My bib # is 4484 and my wave starts at 8:35am (clydes). I hope to finish in time enough to watch the Pro's start at noon! I was considering a full marathon before the end of the year but i'm kinda low on overall running mileage this year and don't want to risk injury so I'll probably do a couple of half marys and join a masters swim class for my "off" season.

Thanks for asking Ernesto. Well..., work and family mostly, not much anything elase, hoping to get a decent ride on the weekend, probably in the mountains.

Chris, have fun in the sprint! It will be interesting to see how you go considering  your lack of swimming or biking. Hopefully you have a decent base.

Barry, good luck again, enjoy the race, 8:30am start is relatively early for this race!

Thanks for the encouragement all.

Ernesto (and everyone else): If my sprint is wetsuit legal (a big if) it will be BARELY wetsuit legal. Last year it was barely wetsuit legal, and I swam without one (didn't own one) and was fine. This year I own a full sleeve one (a necessity for spring triathlons up here, since the ice tends to be gone only by early April) and am wondering if I should wear it if I can. Yes, it is more buoyant and everyone says you swim faster, but is it worth the extra time in transition for a 500 yard 10 minute swim?

BTW, I am planning on wearing my heartstrap under my tri shirt and using the garmin 305 through the whole race this time. That is, for the swim, on my head under the cap, hit start through cap at beginning of swim, hit lap button upon entering T1, put 305 on bike mount (practiced this this morning. got much better at it), hit lap button exiting T1, hit lap button upon entering T2, take 305 off bike mount and put on wrist (practiced this too), hit lap button upon exiting T2, hit stop at end of race. I think the heartstrap will work for all but the swim.

Macca passed me with about .1 miles to go on the run. He beat me by about 15 seconds at most. He was the runner just in front of me. AND I spotted him and hour and 21 minutes.

We'll all forget about the little detail that he was running a different race (111k versus a sprint).

Small race report in a few minutes. Detailed one when results come online.

Gabe (and all).

Yes. I feel great. Maybe I'm just a moody person (my wife and kids would certainly say so!) but I didn't feel great at all after my olympic in June, and now I'm practically ecstatic.

My preliminary results are I came in 5th out 23 45-49 year olds. (and I believe the overall winner was one of them. He's 49). Not there yet, but moving closer to the podium.

My time was 1:22:27 for what they say was a .3 mile swim, 14 mile bike and 3 mile run (although I think the swim and the bike were longer and the run shorter). Last year, for the same course (other than the swim which was reconfigured) I did it in 1:27:09 and came in 10th out of 16 45-49 year olds.

It looks like the lack of training really came out in the swim, not the bike. I averaged 19 mph on the bike, which is huge for me. This year, on a tri bike, I did the course in 45:03. Last year was 50:09 (16.9 mph) but that was on a hybrid. On the run, I did it in 20:46. Last year was 22:45. So between the bike and the run, I cut off 7 minutes. So how did I improve by only 4:42? Transitions were about the same. But last year I did the swim in 10:09 and this year in about 12:45 for supposedly the same distance, so I lost 2 1/2 minutes on the swim. (Neither time I had a wetsuit). A lot of that is lack of training, but I will be shocked if the average time didn't go up from last year due to the course change. I don't think the distances were the same. (But who knows? I may just be rationalizing.)

Oh, and one more thing. While waiting to go to the bathroom for the third time before the race, I noticed I had put on my tri shorts backwards.

@Gabe tough luck with the cold, take it easy is my only advice. If you wake up really sick you may want to reconsider racing... Theraflu (non-drowsy) is a good way to hide symptoms too.

@Chris I'm glad your race went well, the swim may be different because the buoys drift, courses change, the guys got drunk the night before, etc. I heard Macca pulled out of the 111K due to a mechanical, fixed it and started the sprint (again) and won it. Pretty cool to get passed by the Ironman World Champion, huh?

@Barry I almost forgot you're doing your first Oly tomorrow!, man best of lucks out there. Build your legs slowly, enjoy the race!!

Very cool, but now I am very confused. I just saw his tweet:

Mechanical issue halfway through the bike here at TriStar111. Regrouped & was able to start & race again in the Sprint. Nice to get a win in

But if he beat me by 15 seconds, I don't know how in the world he could have won. I was in the third to last wave, taking off at 8:51 AM. Macca took off for the 111k at 7:30 AM. The last wave for the sprint left at probably 8:57 AM. I came in at about 10:16 AM and so did he. To win, he would have had to come in under 58 minutes (I saw the time of the guy who won last year.) But that means Macca started the sprint at like 9:18 AM, after the last wave had left 20 minutes earlier.

Maybe the course was still open and they let him do it, but it sounds odd. I would think an elite would have to go off with the elites, and they went off at about 8:10 AM.

We'll see when the official results come out.
