One thing I am finding is I really could use an active rest day more often than I am taking them.  Not sure which will yield better results: push hard now without the rest (7 weeks to my first event) and use the last two weeks to taper down or take them now.  Which will yield better quality workouts and end result?

Pushing hard for 5 weeks is probably not a great plan.  I'm not a bit believer in pre-planned rest days, but the occasional light day, either unplanned but felt necessary, or unplanned and forced on me by life, is helpful.

That said, yes, you will feel increasingly tired during your last final build before a race.  Yes, times will slow somewhat.  This is normal and a good taper should take care of it (though two weeks is very long, especially for a shorter race).  However, if you are unable to go truly hard on your hard days (never mind 'fast, just 'hard') then either you have too much accumulated fatigue or you are not going easy enough on your easy days (or both -- the latter can cause the former, of course).

Got in 1650m of swimming and 5 miles of running. I felt like I was flying through both only to find out that I was slower than I thought. Booo!

I added sprints in my swimming. Getting winded  was nice. Pushed it on the run on the hills, but still didn't put out the best time. Tomorrow I'm going to get some laps in on the Xterra course and I'm scheduled for an 8 mile run. Hopefully I won't find reasons to flake.

Have a great day!

Half way through my six days of single parenting. I could not do this without the help of my inlaws.

Training is going OK but it is of secondary concern.

I must say that it is fun to be home alone with my daughter. She wanted to snuggle on the couch last night and usually this job goes to my wife but as she is not home, I got in some cuddle time. Of course my daughter was saying to me, "I sure wish Mom was here." (Snuggling is not my strong suit ).

Hopefully she will have fond memories of hanging out with her dad when she gets older.

On other fronts, I am going to train in the morning tomorrow and then donate my unit of blood. All bets are off after that. From past experiences doing this, I expect my swim paces and my biking power to drop off for awhile. As a scrawny, 145 pound weakling, the unit of blood affects me more than it would a bigger guy (I think).

Good Morning Gang,

I got my swim in this morning and I had somewhat of a breakthrough ... again ... I think. I have been spending a lot more time in the water since hurting my knee back in November. The knee is fine now but my coach has me still swimming a lot more than what I would usually do on my own and its working. I woke up this morning and didn't want to get out of bed but finally was able to convince myself that my swim is important. I had some UCAN and drove to the pool. I want to post my times here which are all 100's with almost full recovery which was anywhere between 1 - 1.5 minutes.

1:16.9 - 100
1:17.5 - 100
1:18.3 - 100
1:18.3 - 100
1:19.9 - 100
1:20.0 - 100
1:19.9 - 100
1:19.8 - 100
1:21.9 - 100
1:21.6 - 100

I have never, ever done this before ... I blew my past 100's out of the water. Now remember I am 200 lbs and have no upper body strength whatsoever. I wonder what I could do with some swim specific weight training ... or losing some weight.

I got my first race of the season coming up on Sunday. St. Patrick's Sprint Triathlon ... can't wait to look how far I have come from last year. This is a C race and I only use it as another day of training. There is no taper for me for this race. I have an easy week of s/b/r leading up to the race.  Hope everyone is having an amazing day like me ... :-)

I would be seriously excited about/happy with those 100 times.

OK got the message.  Take the down time.  Intellectually I know its right but the competitor in me just wants to push.

Has anyone done a reverse tri?  A local HS is doing a fund raiser for the water polo team which is a good reason for me to do it.  It's in three weeks and short. 3 mile run, 10 mile ride, 400 yard pool swim.  What I am curious about is clothing.  In my upcoming races I will wear a trisuit under my wetsuit for the swim and all is good.  Not sure swimming in a trisuit is the best answer, or is it?

On the topic of nutrition, here is an interesting article on "Avoiding the Bonk" in an Ironman.

Stuart-for the reverse tri I think the trisuit will be fine. Its a short swim and you are a strong swimmer so it will not make much difference...especially if the trisuit is very tight fitting.

Had another TT during my swim today. This time 200 yards. Finished in 2:42. Really didn't know what to expect but that was faster than I expected. Long intervals on the bike scheduled for tonight.

1/2 of today's training is done. Got in about an hour and a 1/2 of mountain biking. Biking is so dang hard for me. I'm more miserable pushing on the bike than I am running, lol! Still have an 8 mile run to do later. I'm trying not to sit down too long so I won't get that comfy, sleepy feeling. Once that hits it's hard for me to get out the door.

Good morning! Quick treadmill run done. On the road today then back home for another run this evening. Looking forward to the time change this weekend so we can have a little more daylight in the evening. Have a good day!

I know I'm a few pages late but Jimmy I just wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss. My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

I've had 3 good days of training in a row which feels really good. It's doesn't sound like much probably but I managed a 4 mile run yesterday and was really happy about that. I was worried I had lost too much fitness but it was really my last opportunity to get on board with a (modified) training plan before my HM next month. I'll have to ramp up my long runs by a couple of miles each week but I'm hoping my base fitness will pull me through. This is my 5th HM in 3yrs. so I've been pretty steady until this winter.

Well the next few weeks should be fun.  I just returned from the doctors.  I have a small radial fracture at the wrist.  I have been fitted with an Exos brace that I need to wear for at least 4 weeks.  The good news is I can swim with it as well as ride and run.  Not what I was looking for but it is what it is.

I am not however going to do the reverse tri in 3 weeks and keep my target on the sprint in April.

Nicole--good work on the running. It sounds like you are making good progress.

Blanda--I am with you. The bike is so dang hard. It is my nemesis but I swear that one day I will conquer it

Stuart--Sounds like the outlook is pretty good on your injury, all things considered. Somehow it makes you more hard core to say that you are training with a broken bone.

Had the day off today post call and got some reasonable sleep last night. Had a great trainer session this morning and followed it about 45 minutes later with a respectable swim. Then off to donate a unit of blood. Stopped by REI afterwards and rewarded myself with some deep-discounted tri gear. All in all a pretty good day. Still have to get my daughter to swim practice from 5:30 - 7:00. Usually I would take that golden opportunity to get in a run but I think today will be rest and refuel instead.

Wife and son return tomorrow and it can't happen a moment too soon

Hope everyone else is doing well.

I'm flying out tomorrow to DC for a teaching conference. I moved my bike ride tomorrow and added to this evening, so just finished up a 2 hour/30min transition workout. I was actually surprised that it wasn't all that bad. I'll get my swim in the morning, and then hop a flight, coming back in on Sunday. Hopefully, there isn't so much snow that I can't run, I don't want to have to do two runs on a treadmill in a new city.

Nicole-glad to have you back. Sounds like training is going well. Good job.

Jamie-safe travels. Hope the weather cooperates for you.

Busy day here but got both of my runs in. Looks like I will be on the treadmill again early in the morning since I will not be able to workout at lunch. Bike tomorrow evening with another ART session late in the afternoon.

Anyone racing this weekend?

Randy - I am racing this weekend. Its the first Triathlon of the season. I wasn't planning on doing it but my coach said "Gotta do it" so I decided to sign up. Thiis is the same race course and distance to one of the Tri's I did last year in October so its going to be nice to compare the two races.

I went to the pool a few hours ago and was pumped because my workouts were great so far this year. I ended up sharing a lane with three other people. Not only were they all slower but it also made it hard to get the kick drills done I was supposed to do.

Oh well ... going to bed now ... see ya in the morning!

OK group....here's a little hypothetical game for everyone.  Let's say you are given $2000 to spend however you want on a triathlon related expense. Spouse/significant other is totally fine with whatever you do.....of course assuming its not detrimental to the relationship . What would you spend it on. Coaching, powertap, new bike, home gym, travel to a destination race, EPO (just kidding..well kind of ).  I think I know what I would do but will hold off for now...Anyone want to give it a whirl?

I feel like I have a pretty good "base" on gear and such for now, so I'd spend it on coaching. Right now, I'm using a training plan out of the Don Fink book and I'm using that as well as this forum for my coaching needs, but I think I'd be interested in something one on one and a training plan more specialized for me. Of course now that I typed all that I just remembered how many times I've heard that a power meter is so beneficial for training... But I think a year or two of coaching would outweigh the power meter... maybe

I'd spend it on a power meter setup. I've been using Strava to help me keep track of my output but a meter would come in handy.

I am embarrassed to acknowledge how much I have spent in the last two years on triathlon gear, racing, coaching, etc., all (most) of which has been preapproved by my wife.

In all that spending, the best bang for the buck is the coaching. Having someone else write a plan, specific for me, with testing, periodization, race scheduling and everything else that goes with hiring a good coach has been invaluable. I have already purchased the Power Tap and the Garmin so that is taken care of--that was great value as well.

If I had $10,000 I would be purchasing an Endless pool so I could do almost all of my training at home.

Great responses so far! Not sure I could handle the Endless Pool......swimming and never getting anywhere is kind of my vision of Hell!

Coach-an excellent investment. Only been with my current coach for 3-4 months but he has me doing workouts I never thought possible 6 months ago. Hopefully, race season will bring the results I'm looking for.

Wheels/PT-a natural progression for many triathletes. I have a set of Williams Cycling Carbon Clincher 58s with a wireless Powertap Pro+ hub I may be interested in selling. If anyone is interested shoot me a PM and I will try to come up with a price and some pictures.

Me? I've been itching to try some of the recovery boots that are supposed to help with recovery. Probably some Normatec brand....about $1500. I'm a bit like Jason in that I have bought alot of the toys over the last few years of doing triathlons.

Keep the responses coming. Interesting to see what everyone has on their wish list.

Bike upgrade! I have a hybrid and would get a road bike, fitting, clipless pedals and shoes.
It is actually in MY plans anyway, must get the endorsement at home of course. So far so good on that front since the health benefits of all this have been obvious and awesome. Good for my mood too so I am probably easier to live with.
Birthday present to me this year I think!

Jason: It's actually comforting knowing the biking it tough for you too. The cycling fed. took so many awesome pictures of people smiling and rocking the bike race last weekend and in all my pictures I looked either horror struck or in pain. I pretty much was both the whole time! It's fun, but so hard!

Randy: I'd put it towards races. I'd have to travel for anything over an Olympic distance, so airfare is a huge chunk of triathlon expenses here.

Only got a 3 mile run in after that mountain bike session and I felt every inch. I'm still sore! Yesterday my usual 1650 open water swim took me an hour. My forearms and hands were so sore it hurt to push the water.

Just a run today then tomorrow morning going with a group to do the Xterra bike course.

Happy training!

I'd go with the coaching option, as well. I'd love some critique on my run/swim/bike form, as well as some tailored workouts. However, I'd also spring for a Garmin 305 or 910; my Timex is great for running, but I'd love some data.
