Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Good idea DJ! Although I can't help with the reptile stuff.Other hobbies? Not a lot of time for those, but I have 2 silver vehicles that I love, one is my Madone road bike, the other is my Corvette. It isn't anything especially collectable, but it is a convertible. I bought all the parts to upgrade the exhaust and intake system last year just before I tore up my shoulder so it all still sits in the box. Once the weather gets a little nicer I will get that done.My wife always had cats, so shortly after we got married her cat died of old age, she was 23. We adapted brothers shortly after that, about 12years ago. A couple of years ago, one of them got cancer and died pretty quickly so we figured a dog was a good idea. The surviving cat, Buster, didn't thinks so, but he has grown to like Molly. She's a chocolate lab, everyone loves her! Although, right now she is not very happy. Somehow she caught her leg on something sharp, we wound up at the emergency vet and they had to put her out to fix it as it was a jagged cut and had gotten quite dirty. Now she has the cone and a shaved leg. |

Extreme Veteran 1700 Normal, Ill. | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED I ran 20 miles continuous yesterday, yes I freaking did. Long slow distance. Sub 10 min miles like the coach wanted. 25 degrees, 15 wind chill, icy snowy trail. He thinks I'll do 45 secs to 1:30 better on a marathon than that. HAHAHAhahahaha. But he can dream. Turned around and had a really good bike today. Short and intense. I got a new book Swim Speed Secrets. The author is all about the catch, propulsion. She says we have the technique at this point probably but we lack propulsion skills. Good stuff really. I took lots of semi private swim lessons with a triathlon coach here over the last 6 months and my technique is much better. But I want to go faster and that means better propulsion. Working on it. Just ordered Zogg's new photochromatic Flex Reactor goggles. Pricy but I can't find an Aqua Shpere cheaper that fits right consistently and what the heck. I wear them a lot, might as well be comfortable. They dim with sun, clear with shade so no decision-making race day on what lens to wear. Also anti fog. I need all the sighting help I can get. Central Illinois is supposed to be due for one last storm tomorrow and Tuesday, then climb slowly through the 40s into the 50s in two weeks. I can't freaking wait. |

Listen to your coach! When I trained for the marathon I never broke below 10/mile on long runs. My medium length tempo runs were closer to real pace. I ended up with an 8:45 pace eve after blowing up on mile 20 and walking part of the last 10k |

CLOSED Meulen - 2013-02-28 11:49 AM kenj - 2013-02-28 12:41 PM Meulen - 2013-02-28 1:23 PM rquinn23 - 2013-02-28 12:05 PM Hills--something we don't have much of in Central Florida! I actually like biking and running hills, but have never been anywhere with long, steady climbs. Hills here are typically short and steep, or not very steep but just rolling. I am slow on biking up hills, but LOVE the downhills! Last week I watched a video of the IM Louisville bike course, and now I'm nervous, because it is much hillier than I anticipated. Hopefully I can gain time on the downhills, because I tend to fly by people on those. And I hope I can remain calm on the uphills and listen to everyone's advice about not overdoing it on the bike to the detriment of the run. Weather--I really am amazed at all of you who live in cold areas and the dedication you have to getting workouts done indoors. I just don't think I could do it! Granted, come mid-May, I'll likely have quite a few indoor bike workouts because of the daily afternoon storms here, but until then, I am happy getting outside for most of my workouts. QUESTION: I am trying to figure out what I'm going to wear in my IM. It's not until August, but I want to figure it out early so I can test everything in training or a shorter tri. I have a one piece trisuit that I wore in my HIM. I also have a two-piece setup that I've worn in shorter tris. I am leaning towards wearing the same thing through all swim-bike-run (I have read about some people changing clothes, but I don't think I want to do that). I will change socks (for HIM or shorter I do not wear socks, but I'm going to for the full, for both the bike and run segments). I am undecided on a swim skin--I don't know enough about them and whether it's worth getting one. From what I've read, they really only benefit faster swimmers. Although my swim is improving drastically, I still won't ever be a "fast" swimmer--I'll be happy to make it into the top half of my age group rather than coming in at the bottom. So what advice/experiences do you have? One piece? Two piece? Swim skin? (No wetsuit for this one, so that's not a worry.) I'm also wondering a bit about peeing on the bike and run...maybe that's an entirely different subject for a later time? :-) Becky, Sometimes I actually welcome the cold weather. While it's nice to be outside, I don't get the "quality" of workout in that I do on the trainer or treadmill or pool inside. So come winter, it's a good change to focus on quality. I've come out of every winter so far sooooo much stronger than I was in summer.
Take this with a grain of salt, cuz I've never gone 140.6! Plus, I'm not a girl! In 70.3 I like the two piece. Yes, because of the possibility to have to use the fascilities. But, also I'm much more comfortable in the 2 piece. For me I like cycling bibs. The only bibs that work for tri's without feeling like a diaper is the DeSoto 400 mile bibs. They have shorts too if you prefer shorts. To me, these have the extra padding I enjoy on the bike yet I have no issue running in them. A lot of pro triathletes have switched a lot of their training, especially on the bike, to the trainer for the reason you mention. The quality and repeatability of the trainer is much better than the road. Add in the safety factor of dealing with the increasingly growing number of distracted drivers and it becomes quite appealing. I think you always need to get some time outside to keep up the handling skills, but the legs definitely benefit being inside. The threads about the trainer and not being able to stand it I understand to some degree. But if you take a little time to improve the environment with some entertainment and a fan, it becomes much more tolerable.
couldn't agree more Ken!!!
I think if you properly structure your workouts ahead of time it also really helps make time go by.
I wanted to mention a recent purchase to the group along these lines. I tried this fan for the heck of it. It's a little out of the "norm". Turned out to best fan I've ever used. Throws an incredible amount of air. It practically cools off my entire first floor when I have it on. It's also the quietest fan I've ever had and the smallest and easiest to store. I'm REALLY impressed with it!
I have that same fan. It works great!

Hobbies aside from triathlons, a little unknown fact about yourself, or pets! I'll start.I'll play Hobbies - I literally have no hobbies outside of trI's now. family and work are way more than I can handle with s/b/r. Fixing up my house and yard used to be where I spent all my free time. In 2006, right at the height of the housing bubble, we bought a fixer upper because it was all we could afford at the time and its in a good school district. I made a lot of progress outside where my lack of knowledge in landscaping could be made up for with a willingness to do the back-breaking shovel work. this has all fell apart some and gone in reverse some. Never made near enough progress inside but at least the kids have a pretty cool yard to play in. its not your pretty, manicured landscape type job, but when we moved in it was litterally a gravel lot with crumbling retaining walls and dying trees everywhere. It was a way more expensive hobbie than tri's. Home Depot and Lowes have been sending threatening letters to the bike store for brainwashing me :-) Unknown fact - I have one tatoo, and I wish I had none. this used to be an unknown fact until I started with tris and being in so many situations where its visible (pool, races). I saw a dr about having it removed but he said he could lightened it. up but never fully remove it because of the colors I used. (a word of caution - it you are going to have someone draw a picture on you that you may someday regret, dont use green). I got it when it I was an 18 y/o airborne infantryman in the Army. I guess that's another little known fact. Spent 4 years jumping out of all sorts of militarily aircraft and never quite got comfortable with the whole fear of heights thing, but had some great times. Got to travel to some wild places to train (Norway for Winter ops, Panama for jungle ops, Greenland for cheesy UN joint ops) but spent far too much time in a bleak part of Louisiana for a liberal Yankee like me. Because of lucky timing, I guess, never served in a combat zone, but came close a few times. Pets-Just one dog, a fantastic 10yo lab that we inherited by accident. We couldn't have pets in our apartment in Brooklyn until my landlord adopted a year old 80lb lab with no self control. they couldn't handle him, so they waved the no-pets rules for this one time if we took him. My wife is a saint and in the end we were really glad we took him and put in sime time getting him under control. If we had the kids first, we would still be petless. I've got no advice on reptiles. we have a strict mammals-only rule (and no rodents) in the house. Of course this could change but for now rules-is-rules. Any amphibians, lizards, or bugs caught by the kids need to be released within 2 hrs |

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Okay, for all of the touting I do for HR training for running, I'm hiding my hr strap for the next 2 months. I've got 9 weeks until my goal marathon and I'm finally thinking I have a chance to hit my goal time of 3:10. Yesterday's run included 12 miles at mary race pace and I was able to hang on with a steady pace (no negative split last mile dash) but I didnt quite feel like I could suck it if for another 14.2 miles. So that's what the next 9 weeks are for, stricky following the plan by pace. If that means I go out beyond my fitness on race day, so be it. Blowing up won't be the. Worst thing in the world since this isn't a "just finish" race this time. HAPPY TRAINING! |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Good Monday morning, all! Catching up on some posts here: Goals--continue with following my plan (starting week 6 of 30)--so far have not missed a workout! However, nutrition has fallen to a bad place these past two weeks, so my focus for March is to get back on track with that. First tri of the season (Olympic) in 3 weeks! Very excited to see how I do in the swim. This weekend was successful for workouts--Friday nights are my toughest of the week because I always have a run scheduled after work, and it is SO hard to get out the door and do it! But of course I am always glad I did, and usually run better than I anticipate doing. Bought some new shoes at the half marathon expo last weekend and tried those out--I'm undecided on them yet. Saturday morning my triathlon club did a swim-to-bike brick, which was fun. We did simulated open water in the deep end of the pool in a criss cross pattern, about 800m of swimming. Then we headed out for a run. My schedule called for an hour, so I was running the longest. I've never done a cold weather tri, and it was 45 degrees Saturday morning, so it was my first experience running in wet triathlon shorts in cold weather--my rear end was cold! But it was fun. Then yesterday I volunteered for a local half marathon in the morning--always so much fun cheering people on at the finish! (There was one woman who came in at 2hr45m or so, crying with happiness, pointing at her watch as she hugged her husband--clearly she did better than anticipated--so awesome to see that!) Anyway, had to get a 1h45m ride in, and it was WINDY and cold in the afternoon--but I did it. Worst part--Garmin kept randomly auto-pausing/un-pausing/auto-pausing/un-pausing. SO ANNOYING!! Best part--I have a shopaholic/bargain hunter husband, who surprised me with new wheels for my tri bike! I already have Zipp 808s, but they are currently on his road bike--so I think it was a combination of wanting to keep those on his bike and also a bunch of research he did on the best wheel combo for me. So he got me a set of Gray's carbon clinchers--5.5 on the front, 9.5 on the rear, ceramic bearings. They are SO smooth! Finally, I love reading about everyone's non-tri hobbies, too. And especially love that so many of you are animal people! I have no kids but 5 dogs, 2 cats and a turtle (at one point we had 6 dogs and 4 cats!). Tri training is taking up most of my time right now, so no other real hobbies to speak of. I have recently started volunteering at the local greyhound adoption agency (one of our 5 dogs is a retired racing greyhound--he's 12 now and pretty much sleeps on the couch 23.5 hours a day). All greyhounds are "cat tested" before adoption to find out if they will be okay in a home with cats and small dogs--for some of them the prey instinct is too great to overcome--for others, like our greyhound, they could care less about the little critters once they are off the track. So one of my cats, who is 14 years old, is the new greyhound cat tester! He is so laid back and LOVES dogs, but he doesn't really love being subjected to a bunch of curious greyhounds! So I do that about once a month for the new dogs they get in at the adoption center. Sorry for such a long post! I'm sure you have realized by now how wordy I can be. :-) Have a fantastic week everybody! |

Becky, my garmin does that when the speed/cadence sensor battery is going bad. Congrats on the wheels! Those are super cool! I love those greyhounds, always wanted to rescue one. We have a whippet that we absolutely love. She looks like a mini greyhound at about 35lbs! |

Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Happy Monday! Ok, some non-tri related info, we have one dog (13yo Siberian husky), with 2 kids that's all I can handle! I love horses & had one when I was younger. My goal is to get another one someday (still have my English saddle in my garage). I love being outside, can't stand beets, & can tie a cherry stem w/my tongue. March goals-focus on my weight. As I increase workouts, I'm obviously hungrier & usually make good choices bit I've got some weight I would really like to get off. Despite being sick for the 1st week of my IM training plan, I was able to make up all the run & bike workouts (I just had to do it) these last 2 weeks. I'm adding an extra swim workout the next 2 weeks, so I'll be all caught up. Regarding what kind of surface I like running on...I'd have to say concrete. I'll enjoy an occasional trail, but that's few & far between. I'm always suprised at those running NEXT to the bike path, for me that's the worst. I last about 10 secs before I get back on the concrete. Iceman, way to go on your 20 miler, that's awesome!! Robin, did you watch the Iditarod in person? My husbands aunt & uncle used to live in Alaska & race it. We've got a red lantern in our basement that supposedly you got if you finished last in a stage. Bill-I'm curious, why are you ditching the HRM? Way to go everyone else, it seems like you're all doing a great job! |

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Omahabritt - 2013-03-04 11:47 AM Bill-I'm curious, why are you ditching the HRM? Ali, First, I am still and think I always be a fan of HR training and am definitely not recommending ditching them for anyone else. The last 2 years of training religiously by HR for running (and to some extent, biking) not only got me safely to an IM finish, but it made me way faster at the same time. It helps me moderate efforts, especially when conditions change (hills...) so I don't burn too many matches when it comes to training or racing. It's especially helpful on the bike in a tri as its my weaker leg and I don't want too hard of an effort to kill the run. In short, the HRM helps me race according to my fitness level, which everyone should probably do more of. The problem now is that I picked an arbitrary (but important to me) time goal for a running race. I'll probably be walking a fine line of racing beyond what my fitness would call for. Also, there isn't a lot of leeway to slow down during certain portions of races and still make the overall goal. If I had moderated effort on hills yesterday, I would have missed my pace goal, so FOR NOW, I'm dropping HR for running only. Another thing is that running zones aren't perfect. I think my zones are good, but not perfect. Just because my zones show me going above threshold and "burning matches" at certain points in a run, maybe they are off just a bit and I'm not doing as much damage as my zones would indicate. Either way, I made this goal and don't want to be playing "what if?" the next day. If I was handicapping the race now, I would give myself a 30-40% chance of hitting a goal of 3:10, but if I don't because I went out too fast or any other reason (potty breaks, weather...), I won't care whether my time is 3:10:01, or 4:02:58 (enough for PR at this distance). |

My husband and I decided we'd start with houseplants and work our way up so we could figure out how to keep something else alive and train it, before having children. As the 3 and 5 year old are currently healthy and pretty polite, it seems like it was a good plan. Once they start school in a few years I might have time for some other hobbies, but right now my life is work, family, triathlon, which means my conversations revolve around poop, heart rate, and foreign objects I've recently removed from bodies. I've noticed this doesn't get me invited to many dinner parties. Disneyworld was the most exhausting vacation I've ever been on. Honestly, I think trekking through Nepal would have been less tiring. Sooooo happy to be back home, eating and training and sleeping a little more normally. Now if only I didn't have all these shifts to make up... I planned a 2 hour bike ride for today but of course now that it is my day off, we've got some major wind. Trying to adjust my plan to a trainer ride but feeling unmotivated. I might need a solid kick in the pants.

I felt that way about the wind yesterday afternoon! All I heard for a few hours was the wind howling through the trees, and when I looked in the back yard I could see the impact...but I did get out on the bike for a 2 hour ride and didn't regret it. Get out there! Also, would love to hear more about the chickens! Our town just passed an ordinance that will allow families to have up to 3 chickens--I would love to have them for fresh eggs. Are they difficult to raise and keep? How do the dogs react to them? Get out and ride! |

Great start to the training cycle Ali!! I don't mind the concrete for running as I did a lot of it out in CA and when I run at home in the morning it is in the dark so I am on the sidewalks there. I like the rail to trail beds with the cinders, but they can be kind of boring and flat unless it is a group run. |

CLOSED RunningJoke - 2013-03-04 4:49 PM Non-tri related commentary: we have 2 dogs, 6 chickens, a turtle and a salamander.
Sometimes vacations can be a lot of work! Especially at a place like Disney! But you will always remember the good times you had! Now get out there and pedal!! |

Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Chickens are awesome. My husband built a small coop and we have had 6 chickens for a couple years now. They eat our leftovers plus commercial chicken food, and up until last summer we were getting about 4 eggs a day. The eggs are fantastic. I almost can't eat store bought eggs anymore, they just don't have any flavor. They are not much work. We were clueless when we started and just got a book "Chickens in Your Backyard" by Luttmann. Our ladies are a little old now and they are not laying many eggs anymore, so as soon as we come back from the Skinny Tire Festival we are getting some more chicks. Our dogs would probably eat the chickens, so we lock them up in the house when we let the chickens out to play. We even had an infestation of tomato worms in the garden last year, and the chickens ate them all up! -Jaime |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Brian--we used to have four whippets! I love them, they are really great dogs. We don't have any now because they've all passed, but someday I will likely get another. Dwayne--I love the NSX with the bike rack--quite a sight! I've seen the suction cup racks for sale but have never seen one in use, and now I know how they can really be put to good use on a car like that! Ken--I can't remember, are you coming to Florida for work/play/a race/all of the above? Where do you plan on riding? And Jaime--thanks for the chicken book reference, we will likely pick up a copy and start checking that out. We'll have to submit a petition to the city for approval for the chickens, but from what I've read so far, they don't make any noise (we won't have a rooster) so the neighbors won't even know we have them. Here is my latest blog post: http://beakersironmanjourney.blogspot.com/2013/03/i-love-pizzaand-i... This one was tough to share with friends and family, more of a reveal of one of my faults, but a little easier to share with all of you since you don't really know me! Funny how that works. Had a good strength workout at the gym this morning, 1 hour run then masters class tonight. |

It is my only car in the summer so it has to get me to all my triathlons and MTB races. You should see the looks I get when I pull up in it with a bike on the roof. Love the NSX. One of my all time favorite vehicles. |

Elite 3515 Romeoville, Il | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED I'm with Eddie! NSX is one of my favorites! I love the new one too! Acura's are incredible cars. I use our MDX to haul our bikes now. I love it!!!!
Becky- Our whippet was a rescue. My wife adopted her out 4 times to other families while working at a humain society. She kept coming back to her. Nobody could handle her. She was 8months old when we decided to foster her. The dog hated me. I wanted Anne to take her back. She wouldn't let me near her, or my wife for that matter. It took another 6 months to house break and train her, but we stuck with it! She is now the sweetest dog! The picture perfect man's best friend. She greets me when I come home, and just a few hours ago she chased me to the door to try and get me not to leave. She's active and high strung but also cuddles with you on the couch. Just the perfect personality for us. We love her! |

We went to the ceremonial start in Anchorage - which is really fun as the mushers aren't racing yet and it all about the high fives! My daughter was super lucky - she got a ride on one of the sleds and then later got her picture on the iditarod website with her "huskies". I will see if I can repost it. That is cool that you have family that have raced it - there is no way I could do it - those dogs are A LOT of work! |

Expert 1146 Chugiak, Alaska | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED It seems like most of my hobbies disappeared with children and then triathlons. I used to do a lot of gardening back in Wyoming. Since we rent here in AK and any summer weekend that is nice you want to be out exploring, hiking, fishing - not gardening. No pets, though we have had rabbits in the past. I would love a dog, hubby not so much! I had an awesome run today in the Chugach mountains - trail was a bear, but it was a beautiful day. I took some pics, If I have time I will post them! I am going to be soooo ready for concrete/dirt when breakup hits in another month or so! Family leaves tomorrow for spring break. We are going to Juneau then Sitka. Not particularly warm, but my hubby has some work down there so it will be mostly paid for. I will try and get some running in - I am the worst about getting workouts in on vacation! |
