I'm not necessarily stuck on names - just people that you would recognize as someone you "know" if you saw them on the street or saw their picture in the news.

My number would still be fairly low. Because that would only apply to people I'd had an ongoing line of communication with for a period of time, someone I saw consistently.

Yes - but you are far from average.

I've met a lot of people.  But most of them were background noise, for lack of a better term.  Think about it this way...  You go to the amusement park, do you remember every ride attendant?  Probably not, but that person most likely spoke to you, and their names were on their shirts.

That's not really what I am talking about. though.  I am talking about someone that, if you saw a news story about them, you would think - I know that guy (my best jeff spicoli)

OK - so for people that you would consider someone that you "know", is 2000 a realistic number or is it 5000, or 10,000.  If you figure 1000 from high School and maybe that many from college.  Then professional relationships and church, kids activities, volunteer work, hobbies (like Tri - There's 500 members on BT that are on here all of the time, do you "know" them, do you "know" me?).  Conservatively, what is the right neighborhood?  7,500?

BTW - Anyone can answer this - I'm not trying to put wurkit on the spot.

With BT, it's different. I actually know a chunk of the local folks in real life, quite well. And a few people, I could probably recognize from their avatar photos, if they have a photo of themselves that is up close and clear. Many of you, though, I don't know what you look like, so I couldnt' recognize you if I passed you on the street, but those of you who I talk to very frequently, I'd generally lump you into the "I know you" category. If I saw you and you recognized me and said "hey, I'm so-and-so", then yeah, that would count. That's how I met at least two BT'ers. They recognized me from my avatar.

Growing up/school - definitely more than 1000, once you count parents, teachers etc - my school district was very, very large and I attended it from 3rd to 12th grade. College was much smaller, but I knew almost the entire school (only 500 kids, so it's not hard), plus most of the faculty/staff, plus all the MIT frat boys, and their friends/girlfriends, etc. Grad school, probably a lot smaller, since I really only knew the folks in my very small department.

I would say that 7500 is probably a good conservative estimate.

That's a chain, a lot like Outback Steakhouse. It's supposed to be Canadian themed, but as a Canadian, it's more annoying than Canadian. Big talking moosehead on the wall that spouts random crap for no reason and lots of those flapping fish wall mounts. Food is decent but a bit overpriced for what you get.

So would you be shocked if I told you that 11 of the people in that estimate will die - not just get sick, but actually die, awaiting an organ transplant, and that number goes up by 2 every 10 years?

Might be easier to compare it to the number of people present when you give the speech.  Or compare it to something people can actually relate to.

Ah and there is the impetus for the question.

FWIW, I can think offhand of at least 2 people from my high school class who've died (one in a drunk driving accident, and I know the guy who was driving, and one was hit by a car while riding her bike, I think), and at least a couple of people's parents who've died of something random. I'm sure there are others that I know of. Not necessarily related to organ transplant, but still.

I almost run out of fingers to count friends (not just classmates) who I lost in HS and college.

How would you react to knowing that the problem would go away in a years time if only half of those that die of brain dead deaths were signed up as organ donors?  We could eliminate 18 certain deaths a day by signing an organ donor card.

There are plenty of reasons depending on one's personal beliefs. There are a few religions that pretty much preclude it as a possibility.

I had to shake my head when I was in Pittsburgh and this guy told me about a piece of legislation that was introduced to the voters in Hawaii that would make everyone an organ donor by default, but you could sign up to opt out of donation if you so wished.  Basically the same rule as they have now, except that you had to say no instead of having to say yes.  It was defeated by a vote of 82% to 18%.

For some folks, that might be too much of the government in control of their body parts. Not saying it's right or wrong. Just saying.
