Wow - I think I've over trained.  I really pushed it this weekend.  My hips hurt for the first time in months and I'm exhausted... I was supposed to bike today but decided that a rest day was called for.    I will go for a swim tomorrow and try to get back on track.

Sorry you're feeling fatigued, but nice job listening to your body and taking some extra rest.  Sometimes that's the hardest thing to do when you've got a schedule to keep.  Hope the extra rest helped!

Damn - I pushed myself to hard and now my back hurts and the bursitis in my hips is back.  I thought I had said adieu to that old friend about a month ago.  I've spent time time getting my back and hips worked on by my school trainer and have only swam the last three days.  I plan on heading out for a 30 minute bike ride just so I don't go nuts.

Lesson learned - its better to only get 3/4 of a workout in than to push it only to miss 3x the amount of time...

Injuries are no fun.  Put the time into getting better, streching and icing.  You got better once, you know what to do to get well again.

Yep... When I got over the plantar - I got frustrated because my injury was getting in the way of, as Thor put it, making exercise a part of my life.  Now that it's part of my life, I pissed that I can't get out there and get it done...  Thanks for the support to make that transformation happen - and thanks for the support as I get over this little bump in the road...

Even though my hips still ache - my trainer told me I could get in a 30 minute bike ride.  I was like a kid heading into a candy store with a dollar bill in his hand... It was so nice to get out there and get in a short ride.  I averaged almost 15 miles per hour.  Funny how this speed is now slow when I I used to think 13 mph was fast...

I'm gonna swim tomorrow and skip the run if my hip is still bugging me.

I have also been toying with the idea of moving my long ride to Monday so I have more time after I run long on Friday.  I'm thinking of biking to and from work - a 40 mile ride round trip.  I feel that if I can tweek the schedule so that it promotes healing rather than injury - I should be all set moving forward.

I'm drinking homebrew and I'm off to play uno with my son...

I got in a good swim today... the interval training is making a difference.  I need to figure out a cheap way to sign up for a masters class... maybe they have one in Michigan where I'll be spending June and July... it's gonna be cheaper than out here in Boston.  My big thing now is improving my kick, which is pretty weak.

Enjoyed a delecious Hennepin last night.  It was a good, but not great, Saison.  I hope that the Saison I made will taste a little better!  What are y'all drinking these days...

Just drank the last 2 winter brew's from Hale's, and it causes me to miss the fall/winter  winter brew season.  I'm considereing (seriously) going cold turkey, or exceptions on weekends in the spirit of DH.  My reasoning is budget issues, and wiching to reach peak weightloss/fitness goals.  This sounds a lot extreme to me right now, so I'm still wrestling with the idea, but am about 60/40 on it right now.

ha, you can always just try it for a bit right, you don't have to be dry for the rest of your life. But if you are leaning that way consider why you are drinking.

I say this because I stepped on the scale on Wednesday. I ended up at the hospital with my daughter who was screaming with sever stomach pains. We were pretty sure she just needed to , um, void the offending region but she is 3 and what do we know.

Anyways, got the the hospital, she is screaming, saw a nurse then my daughter proceeded to take a massive dump, thankfully in the washroom, and was all smiles after that. Of course, on the way to the hospital she managed to puke all over the car.

Which is my way of explaining how I managed to be on a scale on Wednesday as I don't have one at home. Anyways, with clothes and shoes I was 194. Yikes. So maybe 190 without clothes. So an extra 5 lbs from last time I weighed in 3 weeks ago.

Which is why I was thinking yesterday, as I spent hours cleaning puke out the car seat and car, how I am going to save myself 60 bucks by getting to less than 180 lbs by August. And it occurs to me more and more that I eat and drink for recreation. Like I gave up pop and booze but I got hooked on tea, like lots of tea. Like I go out and buy tea where I used to buy scotch or beer and get the same rush out of it. And eating, well god help me there.

So yeah, if you are drinking for recreation, like that is the same as for sport. And is that really what you want to be doing. I can say for myself I do not want to drink for recreation. I can see drinking for enjoyment from time to time. But enjoyment and recreation, well I think recreation has more quantity and frequency associated with it. In some ways, the less you do something the more pure it is. So this is occurring to me as I spray down the puke from the car seat.

I just got to get to the same place with my eating. But I got this compulsive problem. I do it just to do it. For the same reason I run.

Whatever. I have stopped cold turkey a number of times for a number of different reasons. Most of the time to show myself I could do it because I thought that proved I didn't have a problem. Which it does, I mean, prove you don't have a certain type of problem anyways.

But keep in mind, depending on your reason for drinking, like if it is indeed for recreation, you may need to find something similar to replace it.

I think sustainability is the way to go.  If you go cold turkey only to end up drinking 4-6 beers a couple of times a week, then cutting out beer won't help with your weight loss and fitness goals.  But if you're cool with prohibition - then all the more power to you!

My family has a place about an hour south of the UP... so, it as far north but still nice.  I can't wait to get there so I can swim without having to drive 1/2 an hour to a pool.  4 weeks from today baby!

Plus - I've got a 75 mile ride planned that ends at a brewery (jesus, I'm like a broken record...).

I think this is exactly what I'm going for, rather than 2-3 each night, or every other night, I will go with 2-3 on weekends, maybe even 2x a weekend, and I will cut out about 10-15 bpw (beers peer week).  I'd be going from 15-20 bpw to 4-6 bpw.  Those are some fitness numbers I can get behind.  plus I'd have the DH philosophy of enjoying those 4-6 much more as opposed to recreationally drinking 15-20, and not enjoying as much.

Not cool with prohibition, however.

On the topic of Michigan, we went last year and got a chance to visit an amusement park in OHIO called Cedar point.  Might check it out for you and the kids.  It was a blast.

On the heals of that reply, I just had 2 IPA's while out on date with wife tonight.  It's a local brewery here in Spokane called Northern Lights, and I'd say their Crystal Bitter is their signature.  The IPA's tasted lovely on tap.  What's the chance that those are my last to bevy's this memorial day weekend?

Tomorrow, my wife is out on a overnighter w/ several familly and friends, which means I'll be solo w/ brother- in- law who has a pallet for beverages as well.  I may not make it this weekend, but will start this thing right next week.Laughing

It sounds like a good plan... I'm just wondering where you came up with the # 4-6.  A bunch of people a lot smarter than I am have said that drinking beer in moderation (between 1-2 beers per night) actually has some health benefits.  So, why not cut yourself a little more slack and give yourself a little more wiggle room?  Totally up to you but cutting out 10-15 beers is going to be challenging...or maybe it's not.  If you go after that goal like you went after improving your speed in the run - you'll have no problems what so ever.

Cedar Point is about an hour West of Cleveland where I grew up.  In fact, we went there last year as well.  It's fantastic and might just be the best park in America.  They've got a Rev 3 Tri there that I'd like to do someday.

Nothing like sharing a beer to make date night a little more romantic!  I just got back from the beer store myself with some delicious brews of my own.  I will keep you updated!

Yep - I've got on Oyl that take place in and around the same lake where my family owns a cottage.  In fact you can see the start line from our kitchen. I've swap in that lake my whole life - so I will have home field advantage.  Plus - the bike course is flat as hell so I hope to set a new PR on the bike.

What's on tap for you, Thor?

hammer head red ale x2...ice cold...just had it on the deck of  brewpub with a huge plate of nachos and a pound of chicken wings(we shared)....after my wife and my son went mountain biking for an hour! Luckily my daughter was with her grandma and grandpa. Would have been tough negotiating the trails with her on her tag along bike.

Might enter a sprint tri June9 then my oly is mid July.

If I have 2-3 each weekend evening, I end up on 4-6.  I'm bust this weekend as I'm beginning 6 tonight.  I'll start my plan next week.  The extra calories in the bevy's is really hampering my weight loss goals.  I'm plateauing at 181 do to the evening callories.

the 6 this evening are Mirror pond Pale ale, and Inversion IPA, both from Deshutes, out of Oregon.  a must taste for all.

I think sustainability is the way to go.  If you go cold turkey only to end up drinking 4-6 beers a couple of times a week, then cutting out beer won't help with your weight loss and fitness goals.  But if you're cool with prohibition - then all the more power to you!

Friday morning put 6 beer in the fridge for the weekend...leave the rest in the cupboard....use them how you want...3 sat./3 sun etc. Nobody likes a warm beer. By the time you get them cooled down the urge should be gone...

PS:How was the 10K today??

Sound advice.  If there warm, they won't be there to enjoy.

I didn't make my 10k due to the brown bottle flu.  I had overdone it the night before.

I start bike week for the next 2 weeks.  excited about seeing some consistency on the bike.

thor67 -

So are you doing any triathlons in Michigan?

Holy crap - sounds like heaven - deck, brewbup, wings, kids, wife, and beer... All at the same time?  It does not get much better ...  All those West Coast beers - I need to make a road trip!

Kev - 4-6 beers Sounds like a plan... Good luck!  I hear you about the calories... This weekend, I totally fell off the wagon.  My friend from grad school came for a visit and the homebrew was a hit... So, while I made my calories for the week - I was over my calorie count for the each day of the weekend.

Deshutes Brewery - I just did research and found that they distribute it in Wisconsin... I wonder if I can convince my wife to drive that far when we visit Michigan...

I just spent 30 minutes planning a trip to take me out to Minnesota where I could buy some deshutes beer, then spend 3 days taking my youngest son to 3 ball parks (Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Chicago) my oldest son to Lego land in Chicago and then back to our summer place in MI.

Wonder if we could do this.  Is the beer worth it?

Logistically, that sounds very extravagant to try out a new brew.  I Love the stuff, but IDK if I would cross state lines to purchase.

That vacation to MI sounds like a great time.  Teachers work hard during the year, and it feels good to take a break from it all.  No better way than to go on an extended vacation.

Hell, i bet you could find a new beer every 100 miles you drive to your place in MI. Instead of class prep, just research a bit on microbreweries!Smile

Great idea on the microbreweries... my problem is that I have had almost every beer made in Michigan.  Last year, I tried 300 beers during the course of the summer by visiting 3 breweries. and buying almost every beer I could find in a store...  So, while I still want to go to Founders and Bells, I've been to most of the other ones...

I agree that it seems a little nuts - but 12 out of the 30 days we're spending in MI is with my parents who live in Cleveland.  Let's just say there is a reason why we live in MA and 4 days spent on the road might have advantages other than just trying new beers.

Although good idea about not wasting time on lesson planning as the school winds to a close - it's not like the kids are excited to learn anything new...

I weighed in early this week so I could have a few dogs at the game with my son.  Even though I weighed in mid-day, I still managed to lose 2.4 pounds to hit 190.4... So, I've got 11 pounds to go in order to reach my my August 6 goal of 179...

I hope have good results as well!

Congratulations.  Those pounds just keep on coming off

I weighed in at 182.3 today. Still haven't gotten rid of all the backslide pounds from the weekend, but did drop 2 from Saturday.  Overall goal is 168.
