Almost forgot the required pre-race bike pic!  (Yes, I need to mow my lawn.  I did that after getting the bike ready.  Priorities, priorities...)

Wow, Michael! Your bike looks like a bull! Very nice.

I got in a 2000M swim, and was supposed to go for a run too, but again I felt queasy after the swim.

Another thing I noticed AFTER the swim was that my goggles were tight on my cheekbones and were making my head hurt ONLY when my head was in the water. Found myself very relieved when I came up for air.

When I was finished, hung out at the wall. My head was hurting a tad, but just right under my eyes. Took the goggles off and felt a ton better. Next time if my head only hurts when it's in the water, I know better to stop and adjust my goggles. I was dizzy and pukey. Took me a few minutes to feel well enough pull myself out of the water.

Both times I felt this way I was swimming in the early afternoon and the water felt super warm. Wonder if that had anything to do with it?

Anyway, couldn't run and a few hours later, I still feel queasy. No fun.

Soccer game playing for the Air National Guard's women's team tomorrow. This is the first year they've asked me to play. Should be fun!

Good luck, racers!!!!

ETA: Someone at the pool told me I did a great job on the swim. He was there from the start. I think he heads a swim camp as the kids he showed up with were talking about how many laps they'd be doing. It was nice to hear.

So, it wasn't the swim that made me queasy. I have food poisoning.

Ufff Blanda, after reading your first post, I was thinking, maybe she's coming down with something... and unfortunately, your next post confirmed that... hope it passes(d?) quickly.  Yuck.

Good luck to all the racers this weekend (and their wicked bikes too)!  Hope it won't be as hot where you are as it has been here.  Watch the hydration.  We have two family reunions this weekend (3 if you count my small family all staying in our house!).  I think ice will be the food of choice :-)

Oh wow, Blanda.  So sorry to hear that.  Take it easy!  (Not easy with kids, I know.  Do your best.)

Stu -- I'm glad you have the option of ice (i.e., power)!  Enjoy the family activities.

I'm wrapping up work then after lunch we go to pick up the rental RV, pack it full of stuff and kids, and off we go.

Michael-great looking bike.  Bet it will be going alot faster on Sunday.  Looking forward to catching up with you in Chattanooga.  Even if we were in the same AG I don't think you would have anything to worry about.

Blanda-UGH!  Hope you get better soon.  Super swim considering the illness.

Stu-sometimes those family reunions can be more exhausting than racing. Enjoy!

Headed out to Chattanooga in a few minutes.  Book on CD for entertainment.

Found the ultimate on-the-go nutrition on my morning run. There's a fig tree in our neighborhood that we've been borrowing aka stealing figs from. We have a fig tree that we have to share with the possums. They keep getting to our figs before they ripen.

When I ran by the neighbors tree this morning it was covered with ripe figs. I stopped and filled up my jog bra with figs. lol... Then on my run I would just reach down and pull out a fig for a quick energy boost. lol.. the jog bra looked a bit lumpy...

Blanda, sorry to hear about your food poisoning. Just when you were finally starting to feel better. Congrats on your swimming compliment! Hard work pays off.

Michael and Randy- Have a great race this weekend! Planning on downloading your data to Strava so you can "race" each other there????

That's great, Rene.  We have a fig tree in our yard (and you just reminded me to cover it with a net before I go).  Figs aren't ripe yet, but they will be in a week.  I always grab a few for my summer runs.  Now that I'm on 'liquid only' for training and racing, they will be strictly post-run snacks.  Love 'em!

OK, time to pack and go.  More from Chattanooga.  Have a great weekend everyone!

From what everyone says, it sounds like I need to go by the nursery and grab a fig tree to plant in the yard!

I'm with the in-laws for the weekend, so I might get a run in and that's about it. However, that's good. I think I went a little crazy. I was looking at my logs and hadn't taken a day off in almost two weeks, and I was feeling it yesterday on my run-nothing hurt, but I definitely felt tired. I guess I'll just have to sit by the pool for a day or two...

If you get a fig tree make sure to plant it in the back yard!!

Your logs look really good! Enjoy your weekend of well deserved rest.

Also in Chattanooga.  Headed out for a ride this morning and rear tire was flat.  Would not hold air.....fortunately I brought an extra tube that would work on the disc wheel (short valve stem).  Got it changed and did about 35 minutes dollowed by an easy 20 minute run along the course.

Hope to catch up with Michael at check in/expo today.  Its going to be hot tomorrow.  Just need to adjust pace based on the heat, not worry about time goals and just do my best.  Feel like I'm ready but I know the last half of the run will be brutal.

Randy and Michael, good luck to both of you!

I'm off to a great start in swimming volume this month, already 7500 yards!  I've been more tired than usual the last few days and I think it is the result of all the swimming drills, muscle fatigue.  I am setting a lofty goal for swimming volume this month and know that as time goes on this new soreness will dissipate and my fitness improve.

Looks like the heat wave is easing up a bit next week.  Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Nice job on the swimming Jim.  May the force remain with you!

I walked all up and down Chattanooga with the family today.  I tried to stay hydrated, but it was tough as it is HOT here -- I was hoping for relief but it is basically the same as back home (105 today).  My feet are killing me, but I know from experience that they'll be fine in the morning.

Randy and I had a good chat, and then met totally randomly in the grocery store.  He looks ready to race!  Randy, you're gonna kill it out there tomorrow.

Good night all.  I never sleep well the night before a race, but I always try....

Awesome job on the swimming, Jimmy!

13.4 mile run completed.  Hot, but otherwise enjoyable run around the lake 3 times.  Added in some hill work on each lap on a side road.  Then sat on the beach watching the sailboats zipping across the lake.  What a perfect Sunday thing to do!

Make that three. I got second AG in my race today as well. Had a really nice overall race. Recovered from a below average swim with a good bike and run. Cooler air moved in last night here so it was actually very comfortable--although the water was in the upper 80s!

Hi All,

I'm Jamie's friend that he mentioned a few pages back. I really appreciate you letting me join on even though the group is technically closed.

My name is Nate and I'm 31 years old. Back in October 2011 I had a bit of a health scare due to my unfortunate longtime abuse of alcohol.  After some pleading from my girlfriend and a visit to the doc, I've since made efforts to improve my health through diet and fitness.

I'm happy to say that alcohol is no longer a problem I've increased my activity dramatically. I've also recently adopted a plant based diet that includes no meat or other animal products.  In November, Jamie invited me to start running with him and his weekly running group. I did it for a few weeks while also running and lifting by myself during the week. I cut about 10 lbs of weight and then X-mas vacation came around... Unfortunately, I did not recover from that week and although I kept my diet pretty strict, I went on a 4.5 month hiatus from exercise.

In May, I began contemplating a routine again and decided that I needed an excuse to work out.  I had been involved in sports in high school and there was always a good reason to practice and get fit... That was to do as well as possible in the game that was come. So I figured Triathlon races would be my goal and my excuse to get in shape. It so happened that Jamie had done a few already and he's helped me out with my questions so far.

Family: Currently live with my awesome girlfriend.

Training: For about a month now, I've been doing about 4 times a week of some sort of cardio(Swim/Bike/Run) and 2 times a week weight lifting. If I can finally convince myself to go to bed really early, I hope to get 2 workouts in per day during the week. I plan on following one of the training schedules on this site as soon as I finish my introductory Sprint this coming Saturday.

Races: My first one will be a Sprint this weekend.

Weight Loss: In October I was 240lbs, I've since dropped to 210 and hope to keep going until my gut disappears

Again, thanks a ton for letting me join late. I'm excited to start this journey and to learn all about this sport!

-Nate

Great job Jason...just think how fast you will be with that new bike!

Had a good visit with Michael after the race and at awards.  I had been in Michael's mentor group about 2 years ago and we were able to meet up at the Chattanooga race 2 years ago when I was a "mentee".  He had a great race today especially considering the problems he has had through the Spring.  Also, he spent all day yesterday doing the tourist thing with his family in 100 degree heat in Chattanooga....and was still able to have a strong showing. Great job Michael!

I was pleased with my time given the conditions.  Times are always a bit "slow" at Chattanooga since the bike is just over 26 miles rather than the usual 40k/24.85 miles in most olympic races.  My goal at the beginning of the season had been to go sub 2:25 at Chattanooga.  Missed that by about 30 seconds but given the heat feel that it was a good race. A bit surprised to get 2nd in AG considering who was racing in my AG but I think on days like today its not so much about times as managing your race.  Thanks to everyone for their support and well wishes.

Clean up has been a chore.  I hit a bump right out of T1 and the top on the bottle between my aerobars popped off drenching me and the bike with Accelerade.  Drank a good bit to keep the rest from sloshing out and get some calories in but the bike and I were a sticky mess.  Given the heat I had a water bottle on my frame and was at least able to stay hydrated on the bike.   Its always something...

Randy
