Extreme Veteran 1190 Silicon Valley | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Randy my response would be easy, a tri bike. I went with a road bike and still like that decision but if I had a new found $2G I will look for a good used tri bike. |

Expert 866 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED I think it would be a toss up between a power tap and a coach. I don't have to have the approval of a S.O. so that's one less thing to worry about. When we were married and built our house, we had in our original plans the installation of an endless pool. Our builder warned us about mold issues but I wish I had done it looking back. My neighbor has one in his basement. His entire family uses it. I'm working my way back into training. I've been asked to participate in a Tough Mudder competition in June. I'm going to try to work my schedule to allow this. Sounds like a blast, has anyone in this group done one? Jim |

Veteran 330 Denton | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Jim - I did the Tough Mudder last year and it was a blast. I would do it again this year but its in October and I am already signed up for the Austin HIM. Jumping in the ice bath was pretty crazy ... and the electro shock therapy ... yeah got shocked twice. |

Extreme Veteran 1190 Silicon Valley | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED So I just discovered that with a cast covering my wrist and forearm I can not grip my bars on my bike. In playing around with options in a local store I think the only thing that will come close to working is a set of aerobars with a slope up at the end (sorry, don't know the technical term). Since I can not bend my wrist I can still grab the bar sticking up with my arm flat using just my fingers. The thumb is immobile. Does it make sense to get a pair of clip-ons or accept that all my bike training will have to be on a stationary bike for most of the time up to my tri? I would not reroute all the cables, just use it for holdin on. Is this a reasonable and safe idea? Anybody know where I might be able to pick one up cheap since it will likley be used for just a few weeks? |

Stuart, I have a pair of Profile Design Clip ons you may have. No internal cables, just a simple design but it does have an upward bend as well. If you'd like them, shoot me a PM and I will express mail them out to you tonight. Jim |

I think I would spend it on either: (a) child care (so that my wife and I could train together) or (b) home care services (lawn mowing, house cleaning, laundry, etc.) to free up time to train. Extreme Veteran 990 Collierville, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED I've spent the past couple of days here in D.C for a teaching conference, and it's been fun. I swam yesterday morning before flying out, then no workout last evening, but I did spend about 4 hours walking around downtown seeing the sights (Lincoln Memorial, White House, WWII Memorial, & others). I just finished up my hour run on the treadmill in the gym, and it was pretty good. Tomorrow, I've got a 1:15 run lined up, then flying back Sunday...for a 3-hour bike ride! Keepin' busy! |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Does everybody have go-to workouts that they love to do or that they default to? Do you have a swim workout that you love? Specific interval workout on the bike? Running workout that really does it for you? This week I did a swim workout that really went well and I hope to do it more often in the future: Warmup however you like, my coach has me do 200 swim, 200 paddles and pull buoy, 6 x 50 yards done as 25 yards drill/25 yards swim, 4 x 50 all out (or fast) on about 20 seconds rest, 100 easy. Then main set is: 5 x 100 on 1:40, 5 x 100 on 1:45, 5 x 100 on 1:50, 5 x 100 on 1:55, 5 x 100 on 2:00 with the average/100 getting faster for each set. I averaged about 1:32 for the first set, 1:30 for the second, 1:28 for the third and fourth and 1:25ish for the fifth. You can pick whatever sendoff interval you like. You would think it would get easier as the rest gets longer but the fatigue builds up and makes this hard but fun. The changing intervals and faster goal time really keeps you mentally and physically engaged. This is nice too because if you are crunched for time you could only do 3 or 4 of the 5 x 100s and if you have extra time you could do as many as you want. I don't really have a go-to cycling workout but I have dozens of different interval workouts that my coach puts me through. Some day I hope to love the bike enough that I will have actual "go-to" workouts. Running: I really love the progression run on the treadmill. Start out at an easy warmup pace and up the treadmill speed 0.1 MPH every minute until you think you are getting to your limit and then hold it for 5 or 10 or 15 or however many minutes you want to shoot for. If you start to fall apart, back off the speed about 1 MPH, recover for 3-5 minutes and then build back up again. For advanced work, get to your goal speed and then raise the incline by 1% every minute for 5 minutes and see if you can keep up and not crash and burn. I like this because you can kind of 'sneak up' on paces that are probably faster than you think you can run. Also, when you slow down it will feel really easy after your faster paces. Don't hurt yourself doing this |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Good morning all. The weekend is here! Michael/D3-good luck at your race. I'm headed out for a long ride followed by a 30 minute run. The plan is to meet my wife and daughter for lunch afterward at my favorite lunch joint. Great food on the deck overlooking the river with a couple of carb replenishing beverages I suspect that means I'll need a nap once I get home. Jason-I'll give it some thought on my go to workouts. Hypothetically, I would love to train and do triathlons without having to actually "go to" the pool...............sorry |

Extreme Veteran 990 Collierville, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Jason-I just stick to the training plan, so I don't really have a lot of repetition in my workouts, as they keep changing from week to week. That said, I do like my transition workouts because of the variety. I just finished up my 90 minute run , which gives me 15 miles of running in the past two days. Legs are tired, but they both went well. I fly out tomorrow morning, then I have a three hour ride, in what looks like nice weather! |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED On the DONE list: bike, run, lunch, clean up and most importantly nap. Tomorrow is long run and an hour swim. I'm afraid my toes will be dragging the bottom of the pool given today's workout and tomorrow's run. Jason-since I have been using a coach for the last 14 months I don't really have a go to workout. But, I'm like you in that I like workouts where the intervals/pace are changing. Keeps things interesting and avoids monotony. In the past when I have had to cut a swim short I will revert back to the 10X100 on a relatively tough interval. Makes me feel like I did something even in a short amout of time. I get the most satisfaction out of my training when I see a workout on my schedule and I immediately think "there is no way I can do that" but am able to complete it. That doesn't always happen so the times when I do complete the dreaded workouts are really satisfying. Stopped by my LBS today. They have a Cervelo P5. Amazing bike. Everything is so sleek, tightly fitted and the hydraulic brakes are very cool. No bike envy for me. I'm happy with what I have but I love going into bike stores to look at all the different gear and bikes. |

New user 410 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Hi guys, enjoying the weekend I hope. I did an outside ride today, it was fun! It was windy out and the ride I took was hilly. I am not used to riding with either of those things. Took me about 48" to go 7.8 miles which isn't very far but I gotta start somewhere outside.Enjoy the rest of your weekend guys. |

Regular 134 Wichita, KS | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Well, I'm back home from Snowmass, CO, where the snow was awesome! I went for a medical conference that schedules lectures from 7am-9am and 4pm-7pm. This allows for skiing/boarding during the day. I took my two boys and we had a blast. The schedule was so full with either conference related activities or time with my boys that I didn't take the time to drop a line. I feel bad for being out of touch with you guys but there is only so much time. I was able to keep up with the scheduled running and biking (in addition to all the snowboarding) but my swimming was shut down secondary to a shoulder injury from a hard fall while snowboarding. I can still just barely lift my left arm above my head. I know nothing is broken but I am a little concerned about a rotator cuff injury. I'm going to contact an ortho doc tomorrow and get an opinion of what I should do from here. As a result, I skipped a planned sprint tri today. I really like the discussion concerning nutrition. This has been a definite weakness in my training and you have given me some ideas to try out. For me, the best use of $2k would be coaching. I'm so new to this sport I feel like I'm learning something every week, sometimes every day. Good to see that the group, overall, is showing improving health and performance. You guys are a real encouragement to me. Now I have to go and get in an hour run. |

Veteran 330 Denton | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Hey Team, I am home and resting from the Sprint Triathlon that I completed this morning. I have been training consistently (swim/bike/and a little run due to my knee injury) for 2.5 months now. I restarted my tri specific training December 28th and due to a great coach I shaved 5 minutes off my time. I raced the exact same course and distance in October and hit it out of the park today. I am really tired now so a nap will be in order shortly. The course was a little wet due to the overnight rain and unfortunately my coach paid for it. He slid while turning and broke his collarbone. So today's race was bitter sweet! Ok the nap is calling ... here is my race report. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=480435 |

Veteran 196 Greenville, SC | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Great job Michael! What an awesome improvement in such a short time period! Sorry to hear about your coach. Hope he recovers quickly. This weekend was exhausting, but great for me. 3.5 hours on the bike yesterday and a 1.5 hr run this morning. Weather was perfect for both. This was probably my longest training schedule for a weekend ever and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Hope everyone's weekend was great! Good luck to everyone who needs to adjust to daylight savings time! |
