Awesome job,. Kathy and great meeting you!  I did well, a bit slow for the swim, got stung.  Did anyone else notice the kayaks were out further than the bouys? :-)  Bike was good, took almost an hour off my IMLP time, and had a decent run, though it was really difficult mental HTFU wise, as it was a boring run course and the mile markers stopped after mile 4.....but Im happy to say I PRed ridiculously at the distance and finished strong and happy!  Congrats everyone!!

Posting from my phone.Swim wasnt bad.Bike was a mess from the start. My powertap stoppwd working overnight. Had issues geting my tires pumped. In the first 10 miles I had 2 flats then had my front tire get slashed and had to wait for the sag wagon. Too many flats/dnfs from the bike course.Decided to just ride easier. Ran into a friend at mile 56 and stopped to help her. Finished the bike feeling good.Run went great. Banged out a 3:48 and finished in 11:29.

Great to meet you too!

Kayaks and boats were often blocking buoys for me. I need to look into that product that can help prevent getting stung someone else used.

On the bike, my average watts were same as at IMLP but was 1.5 hours faster on this course.

Congrats on huge PB on your second IM.

Looking forward to reading your RR!

Kathy, great job out there, and it was great meeting you the day before. I have a pic of you around mile 70 on the bike when I was there with your husband.

It was a lot of fun walking through the run course for about four hours and cheering people on. You get to see every type of person out there. The one's smiling and chatting, to the one's who look like they're wondering why they signed up for this in the first place. Either way, I figure a "good job" or something of the sorts always helps. I know it helped me in Lake Placid this year.

Great job and congrats to all... The distance, with or without problems during the day, is always a great accomplishment.

It was great to see you out there on the bike with my husband...it is motivating.

Did you see the fastest AV guy averaged over 29 mph and was under 4 hours on the bike. I'm guessing he comes from bike racing background. His swim and T1 weren't that great. I believe I saw him when I was still on my first lap and he just flew by me. Another fast guy lapped me as I started first loop after out and back, but he got a flat and I never saw him again.

There's some controversy about his time -- check out the Columbia Tri Face Book page.

Quick question for this race. Is the swim a deep water start or do you have to start on shore. I LOVE deep water starts as I am MUCH more relaxed before the cannon goes off. I tend to have more anxiety/higher heart rate if I have to start on the shore. Thanks for any input you can provide!

Deep water start...look at the map...you swim out the swim exit and around to the left. This year I could stand up at start but just it was almost to the depth I couldn't touch standing up with head out of the water but last year I couldn't...depends on the tide.

I plan on doing the IM AB again next year if I recover from surgery and able to train.

Thanks for the reply Kathy. What does the "AB" stand for in IM AB? Is that the Chesapeakeman? Also, did you use anything to deal with the jellyfish during the swim? I have a sleeveless suit and heard there might be something (besides speed sleeves) to rub on my arms to keep them away. Best wishes for a quick recovery from your surgery!!!!

Aquabike...just swim and bike that are both IM distance but no run.

I have gotten stung both years using full sleeve suit both years on my face and one year on my finger. The stings hurt at least for me for about 15 minutes then slight discomfort that last a couple hours.

Next year I'll get some of that repellant I have seen advertised.

I just read some race reports and they stated the bike course had an area where you had to ride through 1 foot of water during part of the course. Is this normal OR did they just have a big rain storm that caused the problem.

How long was the area that had the deep water?

Thanks

I think a foot of water is an exaggeration--4-6" is probably more accurate. It was a combination of tidal flooding and storm water surge. Both years I've ridden the course there has been some water on the bike course at the lowest point, but more so this year because of recent heavy rains.

I actually liked it--I was hot and my joints achy and the cold water felt good. Just have to be careful riding through it, and be sure to clean your bike well afterwards.

I was wondering if anybody knows how many podium places there are for age group athletes (iron distance race)? I am always a BOP'er but since this is such a small race I thought I might have a chance of placing. I noticed last year there were only 3 people in my age group (52-female) and thought that would be a fun bonus. So if I raced last year AND they had 3 podium places I would have placed as long as I finished the race in time Any way just wondering if anybody knows about the # of podium places.

Just signed up yesterday and coming from Colorado. VERY excited!!!!!!

Thanks for any insight.

Are there any VEGAN restaurants close to Cambridge? My friend that I am racing with is a strict vegan and I did a search and found 2 restaurants (one 20 minutes away and one 40 minutes away). It seems like there would be something closer but so far I haven't found it.

She is staying at the Hyatt and I would assume that such a nice resort would accommadate her needs but the website doesn't mention anything about vegan dishes.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

No spectators at the Swim Start . . . Confused??? I was just reading the Athlete's Guide from the 2011 race. It says that you must take a shuttle to the start of the race. I got the impression that the shuttle is just for athletes and NOT spectators because it also says that NO shuttle service is provided back from Great Marsh Park. It also says that NO parking is allowed at Great Marsh Park which would mean that only race officials and volunteers would be at Great Marsh Park. Is this true? How can spectators watch the swim portion if they cannot park there AND they cannot take the shuttle?

If what I am saying above is correct, is there ANY type of legal parking area close to Great Marsh Park for reasonable walking distance to the swim start.

Any clarification on this would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Spectators are allowed at the swim start. There is on street parking within several blocks of the park but not adjacent to it. Sometimes they close the park itself to parking, sometimes they don't.

Thank you for responding. Could you clarify how long of a walk it is to the swim start from the legal street parking outside of the park on race morning.

Hey all,

This is my first year of triathlons and I am interested in the Chessiman as my first full. Anyone have an opinion on this one as a good first IM or should I be looking for another? Thanks and hopefully I'll see you out there.

bhoov, I can't give you any advice about the race but I'm also signed up and it's my first ironman as well. I'm sure hoping it's a good race and look forward to hearing some feedback to your question. I'll see you out there and drop me a message about how your training is going. I'll happily send you the program I'm doing for it- I hope it's enough!

Since the run is 3 loops, can you get to your special needs bag 2X on the run OR do they limit you to 1X only.

Thanks for any information!

I did it last year and you can get access to your bag once.  Good luck to all of you this year.....
