noelle1230 - 2009-06-29 12:40 PM As a rider with poor balance who is a habital weaver despite my continued efforts, please announce yourself unless you want to risk a crash.
There's nothing wrong with being a beginner and not having skills. But after 15 races... Not being able to hold a line while getting a drink is Cycling 101. IMO, it would be exactly like me saying, "Hey let's go climbing. I don't really know how to tie a Figure 8 and when I do get it right the rope's all twisted. Sometimes I forget to double-back my harness straps, and of course I step on the rope sometimes too. I'm just clumsy I guess... When do you want to go?" If you are aware that you can't do very basic cycling (or climbing) fundamentals, rather than blaming it on "poor balance" you may just want to learn the skill for everyone's sake.

My point is that while I AM VERY CAUTIOUS, keenly aware of my tendancy to veer at times when grabbing water and ALWAYS check behind me before doing so, not every inexperienced/uncoordinated biker and/or racer is as cautious as me.

When I'm climbing, I can choose my belayer.  When you're riding and racing, you cannot choose who you are passing.  Better safe than sorry.

Certainly the vast majority.
I probably would too if I were wearing a sponsor's kit but then again maybe you're just extraordinarily thoughtful and polite. I can't remember a single FOP cyclist announcing a pass to me ever.

Breck, If I lived near you, WHEN (which I definitely would) I passed you you would hear "left"

just sayin'

Ain't this supposed to be in red?

I like Fred a lot and consider him a good friend.

But my money is on Breck.  Sorry.  The dude is modest as hell when it comes to his cycling ability.  He's a frickin' beast and there is hardly anyone on BT that would be able to hang with his race splits (and yes, that includes Bryan ......).

x2. When it comes to the bike I do not think many here have a chance.

As Fred mentioned, he does well holding a solid average over a longer distance.  Which is why he is so good at the longer distances.  He's not a speed demon though.

But he almost never trains in the "hurt locker" zones and never really races there (5k/10k running speeds and 40k and under bike speeds).  That will hinder him from being able to hold a faster/shorter pace some.  He doesn't have to though as that is not his cup of tea and there is nothing wrong with that - especially with his hip injury.

I'd still put the dollars (and the beer) on Breck - at altitude or not.

Guys, thank you very much for the props! This is reminding me of a Seinfeld episode, "I choose not to run!". In any case, it's easy to get strong on a bike here and in my case, my slow run more than makes up for it in races...

I'm still working on finishing off the rest of the 90 IPA case I bought and Fred's generous "loser's compensation" 6-pack of Guinness he gave me.  I've got plenty of beer!

And the bikes are going back to being the baztard child again so that I can get ready for the Fall running season.  With two marathons and a relay across the state of MD, I need to get some miles in the legs.

Oh, it is so on. We'll do home and home, two rides, 60 miles each, lowest total time wins. One tiny little problem that I'm sure will be fine with you is that I'm only available on July 20th and November 23rd so we'll have to do the rides on those exact dates. Since I've picked the dates, you can pick which ride is in Breck and which is in AZ. Bring it!

Do I need to ride in an oxygen deprivation tent? If so, you have to ride wearing a parka and thermal underwear so we simulate our local conditions! LOL!!!!! That's awesome, bro!!

..oh, and we need to do an ITU dismount at the end, I heard you have issues with those..

  • Yeah even with racing you on the days after your HIM and IM races, if we have to do the dismount, I'm going to have to forfeit...

That's because you didn't realize that everyone is supposed to keep their shoes clipped on the bike and do flying mounts .... didn't you get the memo??
