Played every sport there is as a child, and as an adult found that I was missing the challange of competition so I began to run races.  Started with 5k, then 10k, 13.1 and then the big 26.2.  Now find myself with this CRAZY goal of being able to finish an Ironman.  I compete to stay in shape and to be an inspiration and role model for my two little girls.  Whenever I fell like stopping, or not going out that day, I just think of my 2 1/2 saying "but daddy, your superman"  Good luck to all!

I married a girl from the great white north.  She is from Ironwood.

That's awesome!  UP girls are certainly one of a kind!

They are indeed! I smuggled my wife across the bridge home from Houghton.

TRI HISTORY: i'm a newbie!

TRI GOALS FOR 2009: to meet the finish line at the Triceratops tri in june!

AGE:  26

PERSONAL: I've been struggling with weight for years... i've gained, i've lost and i've found again.  Then, back in the fall I randomly came across the book Big, Fat Triathlete which sparked the fire within.  I've been into road bike tours for a few summers now, however I can't run to save my life and although I LOVE swimming I have very limited access to pools.  So this should be interesting!  haha.  I've tried to get my boyfriend into training with me but he is full of excuses... and for some reason my 2 cats don't want anything to do with training either!  I'm super pumped about this summer and really the only thing I hope for myself is just to cross that finish line.... i have a lot of years ahead of me to worry about timing!

Welcome, other newbies!

Don't be afraid to come out to the practice Tri/transition-demo/hang-out on Sunday at Island Lake Rec Area.  See the thread "Let's make a triathlon" for details.

It sounds like there will a lot of us newbies there, and it will be awesome to meet lots of the BT-Michigan folks, and maybe even learn some stuff from some of the grizzled veterans.    And maybe from some of the no-so-grizzled veterans, too.

Is this the book Slow Fat Triathlete by Jayne Williams?  If so, that is the book that convinced me I could do this too!  I laughed my arse off...out loud...reading the book.  My husband thought I was nuts...and now that I love tris, he knows it! :-)  I too was a hater of the run...never had run a 5k before training for my first sprint in 2006.  Now, I am in heavy like of the run, but the bike is still my favorite!  You will do great I am sure, and it is THE best feeling to cross that finish line.  Big goofy smiles abound!

Welcome!

why yes it is!!  I, too, laughed out loud through the entire thing.  i loved it so much!  and i have no idea why i ran across that book in the first place, but im so glad i did!

it's good to hear that i could possibly learn to not hate running.   every time i feel like i can't do this whole triathlon thing always happens to be during my running... and by running i mean my barely jog/walking intervals haha.

Why Triathlon?:  Because I need a new challenge in life

I'm 27 years old, married with 2 boys and a network admin by trade.  I had always been athletic in high school and in college the freshman 15 turned into the sophomore 20 and you can guess the rest.  I decided about 5 years ago that I needed to make a change in my life and I started with a small goal of running continuously around my block.  I eventually mastered that and the distances got a little longer and then evolved into my big summer goal, the 8K run at the Crim.   During that time I also gave up fast food, a discipline I am still holding true to to this day.  As the years past and I got better at running (and skinnier!), I new I wouldn't feel accomplished until I had run the big 26.2 which I did in October of 2006 in Detroit...probably one of the greatest highs of my life!  But like all things, I experienced a little burnout after that and needed something new to keep that fire burning in me.  Enter Triathlon.  I've been swimming for about 6 months now very consistently and with my background in running, it seemed like a natural fit.  So here I am, getting ready for my first official season of triathlon and I couldn't be more excited.  I would love to IM, and I know I'll get there when the time is right.  I crave the mental discipline over the physical self.

Hey everybody,

Yet still another newbie.  I just began following a training program for the first time 2 weeks ago.

My condo is right alongside the W. Bloomfield trail, so I train from OL Road down to Arrowhead drive, total roundtrip is 3.6 miles.  You'd think that a rail-trail would be fairly level. but heading west there is a significant bit of climb (not like Kensington, but enough to get your heartrate up, and sustain it there for awhile).

So, why am I doing triathlon?:  I have been working from my home office for the past few years, and it occurred to me that this scenario gets you far less exercise than you'd get when working in a normal office.  Plus I have always had this goal even when I was younger, to do the triathlon.

Age Group:  55

Current results:  I'm actually focusing more on the endurance right now, but I am tracking my times;  Biking 3.6 miles in 18 minutes;  Running 1.6 miles in approx 13 minutes.   Not yet competitive, but I'm already noticing dramatic improvements each day in my endurance, even after only two weeks of working out.

I've always been somewhat inactive during my adult life, I'm a big guy 6'6" and 250lbs+ and my knees historically have always complained about the pounding (i.e. basketball, volleyball, etc.).  So I have typically avoided those types of activities.

However, the running so far has been pain free (fingers crossed).

So if anybody is in the W. Bloomfield area and wants to meet up occassionally for a leisurely trip down the trail with an ol' fart, give me a yell.

Talltom

My first official tri will be the Big Fish tri in June.  I'm really getting geared up for it and hope it will be the first in a very long line of events to come.

Hi Jeff!  I am with the RACING GREYHOUNDS that meet at Island lake on Thursdays.  You may have seen a few of us riding around the parking lot last night or even chatted with me about swimming/no swimming.  I noticed the swim happened.

Welcome to BT.  We rawk...in case anyone asks

Hi Leesa,

Congrats on your first Tri (Hawk-i was my first, too!)

Welcome to BT-MI.  I've heard now and again that we RAWK(!)... there are even shirts that say so (in theory)
We all cross paths, sooner or later.  What other races are you thinking about this year?

Thanks everyone! You would be surprised how motivating a run in the cemetary can be!!

Leah - that's terrific, I will get in touch.

I am considering doing the Ludington Lighthouse in August.  I would also like to try the Crim but maybe only the 5 or 8k.  I think I need the summer to train, guess three weeks was pushing it.  I kinda freaked in the swim and it took me 12 min versus 8 min in the pool.

Thanks again for the welcome!!
