I am doing a Mother's Day 10K this Sunday.  It is a huge race (10000+ people) and while I look forward to having my hubby and kids at the finish line I also feel bad that they have to come down with me and wait in the crowds until I finish.  I hope they enjoy it.

The race should probably be a "C" race for me, considering I haven't been training for it really hard.  However, I last ran the race in 2004 when I was in the 35-39 age group (59:34) and I'd like to beat that time now that I'm in the 40-4x age group!  So I'll probably be pushing myself a bit.

I will do a race report on Sunday.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Tracy

Being Mother's Day, I don't think they will mind.

I was hoping to get in hill repeats tonight on 6th line (monster hill for my first Tri), but it's now raining cats and dogs. I may need to hook up the trainer to get anything done tonight - but that also means changing my rear tire since the trainer eats through the rubber.

I've tried training in the morning, but I'm not much good at getting out of bed early, but do manage it a couple of times a week for swimming. New Question - how much do you eat / drink before an early morning workout, and how much time do you need to give yourself before you start to run/bike/swim? I want to get the most out of these workouts, but am worried about my energy levels.

It depends on the workout I have planned and the time gap between when I eat and start the workout as well as the intensity. When I run for example I really like to have a light stomach, but when I'm riding my bike I can be okay with a fuller stomach.

I usually have a liquid breakfast of about 300 calories (e.g. Nestle Instant Breakfast, Ensure or Bost) if I'm heading within 15-30 minutes of eating. I find this works for me. Enough energy to get me going and easy to digest with no stomach upset.

If the gap between breakfast and start of workout is longer I make myself an easily digestible breakfast - my current fav is peanut butter and Nutella sandwhich on cinamon raisin bread. A bowl of oatmeal and a banana works equally well. I usually bring a banana with me just in case I feel hungry and eat it abou 15 minutes before the start; but only if I'm riding. Not if I'm running.

You'll have to try different things to see what works for you. Some people need more calories, some less. Some people digest food quickly, others more slowly. Try different things and see how you fare. If you don't eat enough you'll know it. If you eat too much you'll know it too once you get going.

For workout times, mornings work best for me. I am the farthest thing from a morning person, however, I like getting my workouts done without taking time away from my family. I have also found that the longer the day gets, the less energy I have when I do start a workout.

As far as morning nutrition goes, if I am hungry I'll have a bowl of oatmeal with blueberries. If I am not hungry I'll force down a banana. I find that if I skip eating all together I'll be bonking soon!

Hey everyone!
Hope your week has been going good so far!  It is heading into finals week for me (I go to college part time) so I have been busier then normal.  Thanks for all the well wishes on my knee injury I still have a lump but it is going down. I took week off of training to let it heal up which has been really hard, I miss it !   I plan to swim tomorrow and try a short brick work out over the weekend, being much more careful on the bike lol.
I have to play catch up with posting too !
Kristina- great job on your triathlon, Tim you had a great time on your HM congratulations, Terry sounds like a lot of fun in the mud : ) good job !
I find time to work out in the evenings; I start work early and get off around 4 PM so that’s what fits into my schedule the best.  I have insulin resistance so I always make sure to eat something high fiber before I work out no matter what time of day. In the morning its oatmeal later in the day it’s a Powerbar, adding a banana is a good idea for me too. I have learned to really listen to my body on what works for me to eat and/or drink and what time of day different foods work better.  Because of this condition I monitor my blood sugar carefully to make sure it does not drop  too sharply after my work out. So far this is combo is working for me, I think I‘ll stick to for the morning of my Tri in a few weeks.
Have a good end to your week everyone  !

Okay folks, here's a good lesson for everyone. Never ever do a long run on brand new shoes that you have never worn before. Ouch!

I was scheduled to do a long run today I decided to run home from work and put on a brand new pair of runners that I haven't worn at all yet. I ran about 25 KM (15.5 miles) and I have a blister the size of a baseball on my right heel. It's beet red too. Looks horrible. My wife thinks I'm stoopid! Meh, what are you gonna do?

Ouch Caius , hope that blister heals soon for you !

Well tonight I swam 600 yards, that is the distance of my tri race. I am really excited its the most I have ever done so far. My knee feels better too, thankfully, I was a little worried when the swelling started.

Hope everyone is doing good !

I can't even begin to consider running 25km at this point - let alone in new shoes!! Hopefully the blister comes down quickly.

I'm taking the day off today (always try to take Friday off), and plan on getting a long ride in tomorrow and hopefully a swim and run on Sunday (early morning though so as not to impact Mother's day).

Not sure if Tracy planned on a day off training yesterday - but I saw that they had snow and hail in Calgary!!

Godd job on the swim!  Getting the distance under wraps for the swim is always the big thing for me.  As long as I know I can make it out of the watter, I know I will finish.

Gloria - Great job on the swim! Keep up the good work!

Caius - OUCH! How is the foot now? Hopefully healing quickly!

I did my first bike/run brick today. Now I know why they are called bricks! It felt like I had a few bricks strapped to my feet when I started the run. It was an interesting feeling, fun in a twisted sort of way...

Good job on the brick, Tim!

I did a bike/run brick yesterday evening as well  I don't think I have done one since December of last year and I have a sprint tri on Memorial Day.  I need to do one next week and the following week.

Anyone competing this weekend?  I think Tim has a 5K and Tracy has a Mother's Day 10K.  Good luck to both of you!!!!

Anyone else?

I did have a planned day off training yesterday!  Could have done something at lunch yesterday but need to preserve the body for Sunday.  Going home from work, we had hail, thunder, hard rain and snow.  Glad I didn't cycle in to work on Thurs., that's for sure.

Woke up to snow and thought I might be wasting my day off for my first real outdoor cycle on my road bike.  But we waited patiently and were able to get it in when the snow melted.  I was pleased with my pace (24-ish km/hr) considering it was windy in both directions.  I did a little run at the end just for practice.

Tomorrow I will rest so as to be 'competitive' in my first 10K race in a while.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend !

Well I tryed on my first wetsuit tonight, interesting experience lol. It didn't fit , too small so the shop said they are ordering in some larger sizes to rent out, should be here tuesday. I will go back and try again , good thing I am doing this before the race or I might be in trouble. Next week our "lake" aka the large gravel pit, should be filled with water according to the race director, my tri club will hold a swim clinic if thats the case and I will be sure to get some open water practice in then.  Hoping to have a full weekend of training with bike, run on saturay and swimming tonight. We got our share of snow and hail here too : ) should make it fun !

Good luck to Tim & Tracy on your races this weekend!!

I work the next 3 days, 12 hours shift! But I think I may get called off tomorrow. Yea!!! If I don't work, I am going biking!! I will be heading to the hills for 30mil bike ride (it is FLAT where I live).

My Mothers day gift from my Husband (& kids) is going to be a Bike. I am so excited!! I can't make up my mind do I want a Tri bike/ Road Bike. I know Cervelo's has this bike "Team Soloist" where the saddle can be adjusted to be closer like a Tri bike and then you put on the aerobars. I have an appt on Tues to get fitted and try some bikes!! I am going to try Cannondale ?, Specialized Ruby, Trek Madone, etc. Any info on bikes would be helpful? Also what aerobars do any of you use?

I have never tried the aero position. I have heard that it is very different to steer.

Good Job Gloria on your swim. Swimming I alway have to do it regularly or my stroke feels terrible. Keep up the good work!

Be safe & injury free,
Kristina
I download a picture from the Napa Valley Tri last weekend!!

Neil,

The Toronto Triathlon Club is hosting a Milton recon ride next weekend. It's open to anyone so you don't have to be a member to join the ride. Here's more info for you in case you're interested.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone, but I couldn't make this weekends 5k due to being called out to work all weekend No worries though, I'm already signed up for one next weekend as well.

Kristina - Bike Shopping, WOOHOO! I just bought my first road bike a few months back. So many wonderful choices! I went with a road over a tri bike. My advise would be to sit on everything you can and see what feels right to you. Don't let the marketing make your mind up for you before ever sitting on the bike.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Caius - thanks for the info. I would love to go, but I'm tied up for the long weekend. It would have been nice to ride the course with others. You going?

Kristina - Timmeh is completely right, whatever you do, don't make the mistake of falling in love with a bike because of how it looks, it's all about how it fits you. The same is true of aerobars. Hvaing a road bike, I chose what bars I put on my bike, but a lot of Tri bikes will come with a specific set of bars, that may be completely wrong for you. When you get fitted, be sure that they include time in aerobars to see what style of bar suits you best.

All - I will be out of town for the next week on a business trip and don't know if I will have net access. Hope everyone has (or had) a great weekend and keep up the training during the week. Remember, consistency is the key!

Talk to you all when I get back!
