Bump..... 8 weeks away.   How're them hills coming along?????

Meh...(see IronBruin race report...)

Actually, I've done quite a bit more climbing so far in 2009 than I likely did all of last year. Arch injury in early Feb. has kept me from doing as much as I'd have liked, though: Too much of a risk of aggravating it on out-of-the-saddle climbs. New orthotics (carbon fiber...whee!!!) due in next Tuesday...then, hopefully, back at it.

dayum, got sick on Sunday, so I did nada on Mon - Wed.....  missed a long run.  Swam last night, short run today, have a century tomorrow, we'll see how that goes since I am still not 100%, but almost there....

WF is slowly moving from the "race" column into the "just have a good time" column

Next two weekends will determine how WF is gonna go for me: Planning a 70+ mile ride with lots of hills next Saturday (really an IM training ride, but will also be last big ride before WF) and the following weekend is the Chesebro trail half mary. If I get through both of those okay, then I'm good to go. (Got in a 1.25 mile continuous pool swim yesterday, then 1200' of climbing in Griffith Park...18 mile marathon training run this morning.)

Here's my birds-eye view of the long course bike route:

http://www.a-trip.com/tracks/view/16570?authkey=I2yirxKOA4tc6OiM

I was on my bike, and on the road, but GoogleEarth uploads the GPS data a little funny.  But you'll be able to see the elevation and the terrain if you use 3d view.

Gail,

That's pretty cool.  Makes me tired just watching it.

T minus 30 days.....

If it's not one thing it's another.  Couple weeks ago I spent my rest week sick not riding, barely running.  Last Sunday :40 into a 2:00 run, got a (small) hamstring pull at the top of the hill I was running up. I had to walk the mile and a half home and literally crawl thru my bedroom window since I had run from the gym..   so I've spent this rest week not running, barely riding....   At least I can still swim

Tried running last night and got ten seconds out.  It's not "painful," but the injury is still there, and I don't want to push through any pain and make it worse.  It's weird, it doesn't hurt at all walking around, working, etc.....  Maybe a couple more days.

Assuming I can run, one more build week, then a peak week, then taper week, then race week (accdg to coach ....seems like too much taper but at this point....)

I've resigned from going a hoped-for PR of sub 6:00 to a hoped-for survive-the-run-and-limp-across-the-finish-line whenever, and just enjoy it.

Still working my way back from relapse of chronic arch injury in early February, but managed to hit a 72 mile ride and an 18 mile run (and a couple 2200 yd swims) in March. My new orthotics pretty much blew up on me on the steepest climbs in my trail half mary last weekend, but I finished in roughly the top 10% anyhow, so I feel like I know I'll at least get through the run at WF, even if I'm not comfortable.

I'm actually also in the thick of training for LA Marathon (unhelpfully moved to Memorial Day), so I won't really be tapering the run...I've got a 20 mile run planned for Sunday and another two weeks after that...based on past history, I should be fine for WF with a week to recover. Only one more long ride this month though...80 miles or so on the 14th (did I mention I'm also trying to juggle training for my first IM Aug. 1?).

Can't imagine a PR on the WF course, even if I wasn't struggling with my feet, but I am hopeful of a sub-6...maybe even 5:45-ish.

Getting close!

bump.... 3 weeks......  crap!

Hammy still no good, have run 4 miles this month.  Tried running off the bike Sat and got 15 minutes before I had to stop.  Not a lot of pain, but still there, enough to change my stride....   Will give this another week, trying to stay fit on the elliptical.  Hopefully I'll have two weeks of running into WF, if not, looks to be a very long day or DNF

Went down this past weekend to see the course and get a little practice in!   First time in my wetsuit:  hmmmm, better than I thought.  Rode the bike: first 41 miles better than I thought they'd be. Last 15, OMG.  Don't know if the Nasty was worse or the downhills after.  hmmm.   Ran the second half of the run, and it's going to be an $%^ kicker!!!

Man, did I pick a race for my first HIM.  AND, I have to camp.  WITH teenagers.  Will they have grief counselors on-site?

Ah, yes.  All of this is what makes Wildflower, Wildflower!  Surprised  I did this as my first two years ago too.  At least if you survive Wildflower, you won't fear any other HIM.

Do grief counselors = fermented beverages?  If so they will be everywhere!

Good luck!

If by second half of the run, you mean you skipped the mile 4 hill.....  well, you ain't seen nothing yet.  The Pit is bad enough but mostly because of where it is.  Mile 4 is.....   evil

On the good news front, I was able to run for 40 minutes last night.   Not very fast, nor very far, but it's a run.  So.... I've got just under 3 weeks to get in shape for the race

Yup, I know I missed the hard part.  I've heard all about it from my 13 year old..... apparently mile 4 last 7 miles and climbs 4500 feet!  However, he's also running it, so his opinion counts!   Looking forward to meeting everyone possible from BT....and indulging in the fermented beverages post race!

Where are people planning on camping if you know?

We are going to try to get the spot we did last year, on Redondo Vista between the LA Tri encampment and a building, I think it's called the Oak Group Building or something...  we'll be on the lake side of the large fenced in grass area.  If we get the same spot that is.  Look for a black Nissan Pathfinder with an MDot sticker.

I dunno where we're going to be...we're not going to be able to leave until early Friday morning (which means we'll get there late Friday morning). I'd love to be near BT and/or LA Tri folks, but we may be beggars, not choosers...

Any suggestions on decent spots after the best places are grabbed?

Honestly Tim the large majority of people roll in Friday lunch-ish.  It's not until late in the day Friday that people start ending up on the side of the road.....   We're also loeaving, probably 5:30-6 Friday, get there a little before lunch.

A good option is to stop in Paso at Subway or wherever and bring in lunch, takes the edge off setting up al the cr@p

I'll be camping with my tri club (Golden Gate), but I don't know where they'll be.  Two years ago, they were camped along Redondo Vista.  i just remember the Team in Training encampment was close by.

Side note, when I was there 3 weeks ago, my verizon blackberry had service.  I don't think my AT&T phone did and 2 years ago, I don't believe my t-mobile worked there.

It's a big place and there are swarms of people there so if anyone is trying to get together, cell phones would help a lot!

I just head to overflow no matter when I get there.  Wind up with a nice spot across the baseball diamonds where the loong course run goes by.  It isn't mad crowded but there are more than enough people to talk to and look at.  Downside is running by your campsite and seeing your buddies drinking all your beer.  Makes it that much harder to go face the pit.

Paul, that would be tough.  I pass by our site about 6 miles in, so i'm still semi conscious

I can tell it's been 2 years since I did the LC since I am actually getting quite stoked about it!  Absence makes the heart grow fonder

So, is it time to start the meaningless weather forecast part of the thread?  All i can say is I hope the heat gods get it out of their system in the next few days....
