ebshot - 2008-12-31 7:59 AM Okay, motivated mentor peeps, it's New Year's Eve.  What is everyone doing tonight??  Me?  Well, I'm hanging with my two favorite boys.  Cole, Liam and I are on our own tonight.  My daughter, Alex, is sleeping over a friends house and hubby has duty.  He takes duty every year on New Year's since we NEVER go out.  I plan to watch a movie with the kiddos and put them to bed.  Then, I have a bottle of pinot noir and a nice cabernet sauvignon calling my name.  Ahhhh, red wine, how I have missed you.   I'll miss you again once the night is over....

WOOHOO--2009!!! I'm excited about it!  However, I will be sharing that excitement this evening with 5 of my favorite friends: Me, Myself, I, Annie, and Davey (Annie and Davey have 4 legs, weigh 12 and 7 lbs, and are furry).  The plan is, after my 1/2 day of work (boy, I could do this schedule every week), to head to the pool for a pretty hard swim session, go pick up some Sushi, a movie, come home, do an hour on the bike to complete my 2008 tri-mileage, and then just enjoy a quiet little evening. I do believe some red wine is part of that as well...

Happy New Year's Eve everyone...get ready to put rubber to the road (literally!) for 2009!!

It is heart healthy and all....

I'm looking forward to all 2009 has to bring.  I know I have some tough times ahead but I am ready to face them.  Take the good with the bad, right?  It is shaping up to be a great year athletically for me and I am very excited about it.  Personally, it will be hard.  BUT, the tough times only make us stronger....

Absolutely--on all counts.  Hopefully a good athletic year will lead to some good stress relief during the hard times otherwise..I'm assuming your husband must be headed out again at some point...I know how that feels (well, not on a sub...).  I do think it's kind he's taking a shift so maybe some of the younger guys can go have fun.  We have that happen a lot--the young, single MPs volunteer take Christmas and the older, family MPs will take New Years.

OH--BIG Public Service Announcment to all:
THERE ARE NO DUMB OR TOO "BEGINNER QUESTIONS" IN HERE
Occassionally in the forums some of the not-so-beginner triathletes can get a little fiesty when "old" topics are re-hashed....there are your occassional posters that come on, old and new alike, to rile folks up.  Ignore that stuff. I do.

BUT IN HERE, in this group, ASK WHATEVER you want to and need to ask in order to impove, move along, or stay motivated.  There is nothing to small or too big (okay, maybe too big, but I'll at least point you towards a reference) to ask.  I surely didn't know SQUAT about Triathlon still I started reading on it a lot---here, other sites, books, you name it.  The only thing I knew about triathlon was what the events were and how to run. I didn't know how to cycle, I didn't know how to set up transition, I didn't know anything about open water swimming, and I didn't know anything about training.  I am still constantly learning (I think most pros would say they are too from the interviews I've read.

So, I want to make it abundantly clear that this is a totally safe forum thread for you to ask anything.  If the answer you get isn't enough, ask again, or ask for some elaboration...no one here is going to give you a hard time for asking something you don't know....and knowing is half the battle! (that's a GI Joe tv show reference...I couldn't resist).

Yeah, Bryan leaves again real soon.  Can't say when, classified and all that jazz!   He leaves, comes back for a bit, leaves, comes back home, leaves, comes home, goes on deployment.  That is the nature of a fast attack submarine is in and out.  They do lots of shorter ops and then a longer deployment (usually 6-7 months) depending on where you are stationed at.  When we were in Guam, he was forward deployed so in our two years there, he was gone about 80% of the time.  That was not much fun.  It's not much better here but we get used to it! Shore duty is just two short years away!

Happy New Year guys!  Our day started off going to mass at 9:00 (who schedules mass at 9:00 on New Year's????  It's the hangover mass ) since today is a holy day of obligation.  It is wicked cold out and the church's heat was broken!    I cannot even tell you how cold it was!

I'm supposed to run 3 miles today but it is soooo cold that I just might wuss out!  Tomorrow is a planned rest day so I think I'll swap.  It is supposed to warm up to the 30's for tomorrow (heat wave).  I can do 30s but teens, not so much.  It hurts my face.  I need more cold weather gear I think!

Hi all,

Just checking in. At parent's house and I've just got my hands on a 2 week guest pass to the gym so I'm hoping to get some workouts in while I'm down here. I know I need to hit the pavement because the weather's been nice.  I have been so motivated that my dear hubby is just asked me to set him up an account on BT!  So excited because he really needs to be inspired.

I need a recommendation for a good Tri training book.  I am very paper/book oriented, so if anyone has any suggestions, that would be most helpful.

I've had a couple of workouts this week and I'm realizing that the key to this thing for me is going to be the cross-training.  I'm used to doing one thing or the other.  I went from the pool to the treadmill (power walk) the other day, and I felt a little pain in my hip.  It didn't last, but I realize that i've got a long way to go in my training. I'm up for the challenge, but "journey" it will be--definitely!!

Love the HR monitor conversation, by the way.  I'm not quite there yet, though.  The first thing I'm going to invest in is a pair of good running shoes.  Then a good used bike.

 Happy New Year!!

Marie

Hey Crew!! Happy New Years day!! Hope everyone has enjoyed it! I got a great run and a tough (wind beat me up) bike...can't beat the temps here (sorry Erica), but the wind is just so intense!

Marie, glad to hear you are getting some time in the gym in as well! Excellent, and YES good running shoes ARE HUGE.  In fact, as far as injury prevention goes, good shoes are probably one of the #1 things you should get because running is what pounds your joints more so than swimming or biking.  I HIGHLY recommend everyone (if you haven't) to get to a running store (not just a run of the mill sports store) and have them analyze your gait and measure you for shoes and recommend some. You don't HAVE to buy them there, but you can get an idea of what works for you.  If you don't have anywhere near you, check out www.runningwarehouse.com. There you can actually send them a video clip of your gait (someone films you running) and they will analyze it and recommend shoes for you as well.  I buy all my shoes, and a lot of other gear, from this site.  Shipping and RETURNS are FREE...and you get it in 2-days. I haven't found anywhere else to rival them when it comes to the cost of shoes.

2009- IT IS ON!

Okay, we hit page 2.  I don't like page 2.

I got a nice 3 mile run in today.  I wore my YakTrax for the first time.  It was pretty fun to run in the snow.  Our roads still aren't completely cleared so I strapped those bad boys on and off I went.  I got some strange looks from people driving by but I don't mind!

Phew--been gone pretty much all day long.  Got a nice swim in this morning, and then headed to Austin.  Thought I was going to buy a new saddle, was all ready to do it, but the shop folks actually suggested some readjustments to the saddle and aero bars that they think will fix it.  So, I will find out on my long ride tomorrow...maybe I saved a bit of money today! I hope so!!  Hung out with some good friends too (including the one that gave me the cup of triathlon kool aid that I apparently drank down quickly!!)--she is starting training for Ironman Couer de Alene.  So, it'll be nice to have a friend to get some long rides in with, even if I have to travel to Austin (about an hour) on some Sat. mornings.  Had a run when I got back, and man did it kick my butt...amazing how some days you can feel it and some days you have to work really hard to hit the target!

Okay Erica, what are yak trax?? Something that helps you run in the snow? I've about forgotten what snow was...saw it in college in NY and in Germany...but that's about it!

WOW, check that out!! Awesome...glad Santa came through!   I assume they worked well?  Good to know those things exist.  I'm sure at some point here I'll be in a cold place for a few years where those might be of importance! Way to work past the elements.

Kirk--I'm not really training "with" Jen...she's about 3 hours away in Dallas, but she is on the friends list here and we communicate back and forth and I've seen her at a couple of tri's and we're doing some of the same ones this next year.  Her sister-in-law and I did nearly the entire Longhorn 70.3 bike leg leap frogging!  It's funny, when she saw you were in my mentor group she sent me a "small world" note about the fact that you two knew each other and then ran into each other here!  'Tis a small world!

Okay--no new saddle for me...the bike guys actually suggested some adjustments to the bike fit instead of trying to sell me something (and didn't charge for making the adjustments).  SO, I'm about to head out and see how it worked!! Here I go...

I was pretty impressed with the YakTrax.  I didn't slip really at all.  Course I was more cautious too but I think having them gave me more confidence and a little piece of mind too.

So, I think I am having a little bit of ITBS starting.   I have NEVER had any injuries before so this is new to me.  I'm thinking I need a foam roller from what I have read.  My left knee (outside) is just achey.  Anyone  have any ITB words of wisdom????

Ok, I am bringing the kids back to their mom tonight and then stopping by our work gym to run a little. I ate like crap for the five days they were here, but I managed to stay pretty active. Now time to buckle down!!

Got my long run of 8 miles done this afternoon.  Came home and took my first ice bath.  Ummm, brrrrr!  But, my legs are feeling good.  Pretty happy about that.  I also rolled out my quads, calves, hammies, hips, pretty much everything with my rolling pin.  I know, I need a 'stick' but, my rolling pin does the job!

What did everyone else do today?

Hope your workout went well Kirk and that you enjoyed the time with your kiddos!

Great job on getting out there Erica.  It was 80 degrees here yesterday afternoon...when I went to run today it was about 40 and dropping with strong wind.  There's TX weather for you--wait 10 minutes and it'll change! But, I got my long run as well.  I wish I had some words of wisdom about ITBS....thankfully I haven't dealt with that yet.  I'm dealing with some minor tendonitis...but that's it.  And hey, if the rolling pin works, why spend money on the Stick! That's smart!!! Today I bought some TED hose (same as compression socks, but MUCH cheaper)...and I just put them on and will see if they really help with circulation and recovery.  I had a big week (which I think is my future for the rest of the year till Ironman)...we'll see how this next one goes!

Keep us posted on the TED hose.  I have been looking at compression socks but don't want to spend the money.  I'd love a cheaper option....

*sigh*  Again with page 2.

Happy Monday everyone!  I love Monday's.  Bryan is back to work and the kids head off to school.  What's that I hear?  Nothing!!!  Quiet!  I love it!  Okay, it's not quiet yet, I still have the boys home but they will be gone soon (dr appt. and Liam is half day pre-K)

It's my rest day today.  My hamstring is super tight so I am looking forward to resting it.  I'll probably swim though.  I like to swim and I haven't been in the pool in a long time.  How bout ya'll?  (look Brittany, I used 'ya'll'  Hope I used it right! )
