Bob 2194 Binghamton, NY | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks' Group - Full for now! nevergivin - 2008-12-23 1:46 PM When I stay relaxed I am able to swim faster,my kick is better, recovery is faster and my pull is stronger, and I do not become short of breath, my body position is more streamline and I catch the water better. To swim faster I feel I have to stay relaxed, not TI slow relaxed, but relaxed so that you are not wasting energy, tensing all of your muscles and depleting your oxygen. My favorite sets are alternate breathing sets 3-5-7. Great topic! Stuart, very well put! We have a winner!!! Once you have acheived this it's only a matter of more time in the pool to see the times really drop. |

It's all about being consistent and increasing your miles slowly for the run and for the bike, well, it's all about T.I.T.S.. When I started running in 2004 I couldn't make it to the end of my road and back which was only a mile each way because my knees and back hurt so much. A winter of swimming to drop some weight and starting to ride my bike consistently in 2005 I was able to drop more weight and begin running again AT A 10 MIN/MILE PACE!! Just keep at it and remember that we do this because it's fun!! |

Bob 2194 Binghamton, NY | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks' Group - Full for now! willie05 - 2008-12-23 11:53 AM The last time I tried to do a hard effort for a set, I pushed as hard as I could, kicked harder, labored more, was out of breath, etc, etc. and my time for the 100 was a couple secs slower than when I just cruise and concentrate on technique! Lesson learned. You are 100% correct with your analysis Bob. The key to swimming faster is being consistent with your workouts and spending more time in the pool. When you are doing sets at the end of a workout and you're tired, this is the time to focus on technique. There is a point that you will reach that I will call "Comfortably Numb". It's that point that no matter how hard or how easy your effort is you still go about the same speed. The more time you put in the pool the faster that "comfortably numb" pace will be. As for the relaxed power I was referring to, both Rick and Stuart nailed the description. Rick set himself up with a warm-up that ended with a stronger effort then took a rest. The next 100 he did he was able to relax, focus on pulling with power and recovering relaxed and keep a steady kick. Doing a warm up like this and increasing the "relaxed power" distance each workout will help with keeping that pace longer. STuart made a great point of not wasting energy by tensing up. I understand this is hard for many triathletes that aren't comfortable in the water but again, more time in the pool will help with relaxing in the water. This is great stuff guys and gals!! Keep it coming! |

Expert 1288 Hatboro, PA | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks' Group - Full for now! After being sick for the past couple of days, I'm starting to feel better. I'm planning on a trainer ride before work tomorrow. I'm not planning on taking it too hard; just enough to get the endorphins going. The pool is closed until Friday, so I get a break from swimming for a couple more days. |

New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks' Group - Full for now! It was an ugly scene at the office today. AFter a long day of meetings a client of my law firm dropped off a tray of homemade fresh cannoli and xmas cookies. That is unfair and just plain wrong. 3 cannoli and god knows how many cookies (dipped in the extra cannoli sauce he brought) later I am feeling sick... that 30 minute run at lunch probably didn't even out the calories so I guess I need to hit the trainer tonight. I hope my kids go bed early or something... which is unlikely since they are sugared up now. Thankfully I didn't since up for the no sugar challenge. Bombing out on day one would be fairly pathetic.

There are people who did fail on day 1 of the no sugar challenge. It's all about forgiving yourself and restarting. Just remember, not all days are perfect. In fact, few are perfect. |

Modesto, California | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks' Group - Full for now! Well everyone, I recieved one of my Christmas presents early, and it damn sure wasn't at all what I was expecting. My wife told me I needed to do an Ironman, I just kind of laughed and said that she does not realize the commitment and the hours necessary to prepare, then she called me a puss,I told her I had already signed up! She told me that she was just teasing and knows I could do it, I said I'm not! Game on Vineman 2009! I know its not M-dot, but its close, affordable, wont get killed on the swim, and its doable,I hope! I will have exactly 12 weeks between my last half IM to start a half to full program, I'm Stoked! |

New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks' Group - Full for now! Today when I did my swim, I was having real cramp issues in my calves. They just kept locking up any time I increased my kick beyond a slight flutter. I did swim after running for 50 minutes (although at a very easy pace). I have had cramping issues before on during swiming any thoughts/ideas on how to avoid these as they both hurt and hurt my workout? Anyone else experience anything like this? That's not uncommon after running or biking then jumping in the pool. I almost had a lifeguard jump in after me on morning when I swam after a run. Both hamstrings cramped when I pushed off a wall and the only thing I could do was take a breath and head to the bottom and rub the cramps out. When I came up to get another breath the lifeguard was standing at the edge with the rescue buoy. |

New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks' Group - Full for now! Bob, Kristen and mndiver - thanks. I had a quart of water during the run and another quart during the swim (sipping on the rest interval). Good idea on the electrolytes, that had been an issue in teh past. I'll try a tab today as I have a medium swim planned. Happy holiday to all! |
