Kristin, I have an 8K training plan if you want it.. it may be too late now, but you could probably do the last two weeks of it.. you didn't supply a date for your january race.. you want to start tapering your workout may a week before the race..

Tapering is cutting back on the intensity and running before the race.. we'll talk more about it..

Thanks for the offer! The race is on January 25th and I would definitely be interested in seeing the training plan you have. Even if I can only use the last two weeks, I am sure that I can get some good information from it.

Do I need to taper before an 8K race? I didn't think tapering was really important until distances greater than 10K. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Kristin

Thanks for the suggestion on Trifind -- I'm taking a look and trying to decide what makes sense for me to do. Basicaly, the NYC tri on July 29th is my A race. In order to get ready for it, how much time will I need to recover from another race? Could I do a sprint in the middle/end of June?

i'm sure you could.. how long does it you to recover from a race?

Normally after a race(depending on distance).. you will take at least days off...

So i would say you could, your training needs to be for the A race..

If you all are looking for another site - Trimapper.com is a nice site that allows you to view races via a map. There is overlap between the sites but it sometimes helps to get an idea which races are close enough to drive to etc.

Triathlete magazine also publishes a comprehensive list of events by date. It was in the most recent edition (Jan 09 I think?) You can find it at most bookstores.

Team – I am still finalizing my actual races but my tentative plan is:

Feb/Mar/Apr – 2 indoor triathlons & mini-marathon training program (5, 10 & 15k)

May  - Terre Haute Triathlon (Olympic), Indianapolis 500 Mini-Marathon (half)

June – Eagle Creek Sprint tri, Toure de Cure (Century ride)

July – Muncie Endurathon (HIM), Ride Across Indiana (Century +)

August – Eagle Creek Sprint

September – Toyota Challenge (Olympic)

October – Hilly 100 Ride

November – Richmond Marathon (VA)?

I travel about 50% of the time so I may need to make adjustments, but that’s the plan. Hope you all are doing well. Best of luck in ’09!

So do you continue to train when you are sick or let your body rest? I don't really have time to be sick! But what do you do if you get sick...with like the flu?

I'm not sure how long it takes me to recover from a race -- I haven't done a tri in several years. The last race I did was a 5K, and it probably took me a day or two to recover (it was a miserable race). So It sounds like if I just work it into my training plan, making the next few days after the race easy days, it should be fine?

swimming ?s for our team:

i picked up some goggles & a swim cap at Walmart, but neither are doing their job for me yet - both fill w water by the time i'm done my first lap.  are there tricks to this?  does the swim cap go over your ears or behind them?  any suggestions??

I don't wear a swim cap (except during Tri's), but I always leave my "Dumbo" ears outside of my cap. The swim cap always rolls off my ears even if I tuck them underneath.

As for the goggles -  I have tried many (really trying to be cheap) and I didn't find useful ones until I was willing to fork over $15-25. I use Aqua Sphere Seal Mask during races because they have a wide field of vision and are big enough that they are not easily knocked off your face. I also use a pair of Speedo's (can't remember the name) that were labeled as competition level. The only other thing I can think is to adjust them, but my experience was the cheaper the goggles - the more they leak. I hope this helps.

wisewilma, GumbleX makes a really good point about buying quality swim goggles. However, I am going to suggest that you can apply the same advice to swim caps. Don't laugh, but I have really long hair, so I actually wear 2 swim caps, one fabric cap to keep my hair tidy and one silicone to protect my hair from the chlorine (I wear the fabric one under the silicone). I stay away from the latex, as I have had more than one tear in half when I was trying to slip in on. By the time I had replaced the latex cap a couple of times, I might has well have spent the money on a good silicone cap (I use the Nike Swim Dome Molded Silicone cap), which has served me very well. Mine cost me around $12 but that is in Canadian dollars. Just bear in mind that I have heard that if you do buy a silicone cap, it should fit tightly on your head, as it can be prone to slipping.

i guess i'm the last one to respond to your swim cap/goggles question..

Swim caps haven't wore one... i missed my open water race last year.. but your goggle straps are to be on the outside.. doesn't cause any interference when removing them, while in transition.. if something happens in the water.. it easier to remove them.. Kristin that's pretty intense about the two swim caps .

Goggles.. i with GumbleX, spend the money a on a good pair of goggles.. The seals aren't that good on cheaper one.. You have to tighten them so much, you would end up getting a headache.. or dark black circles around your eyes.. (looking like you got in fight with yourself) I use speedo.. competitions (don't remember the name).. they have two silicon straps and the strap tightener is on the back(back of your head when you have them on).. The side tensioners are ok, but the actual strap tears over time..

You will go through a few pair of goggles before you find a good pair.. but stick with name brand: speedo, TYR, nike, etc..

one last thing.. it good to have two pair of goggles.. a tinted pair for OWS, and a pair indoor pair.. though you can interchange them..

LOL! I know! This is going to be such a girlie comment but I think what is the point of having long hair if I just let the chlorine ruin it? Trust me, many a time I have debated how much easier it would be just to chop it all off, especially with all the running and working out that I do. It's a constant debate between vanity and making my life a little easier. So far, vanity keeps on winning.

I will say I have recently gone to shor hair(Like an older Victoria beckam cut) and after my early morning workouts it make styleing it on the go before work so easy. Very Practical.

I also knew people back in my swim team days to put baby powder in their caps to make them easier to get on and off. Not sure how well it worked, but they seemed to keep doing it, so it must have done some good.

With all this discussion about goggles and swim caps, I assume everyone is in the process or already conducting swim workouts. One of the things I struggled with last year was having a variety of swim workouts that I could adjust based on the type of workout, equipment, available time, etc. I got a tip from someone on this site to check out www.swimplan.com . Once registered you can input some basic information and generate several swim workouts. You can save them in your profile and also update them as your performance improves. If you already have a swimplan/workouts that you follow - than keep doing what works. If you are looking for some variety in your swim workouts - check it out. Have a great day, and good luck keeping your hair dry

I've only gotten back in the pool the last three months...trying to work on form, build endurance, and doing some different work outs...is it worth investing in training DVD's?

I have another swim-related question. What sort of watch do you use for your swim workouts.? I am in the market for a watch to use while swimming and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

swimplan.com is a great site.  thanks for the heads up on it.

and thanks for the good wishes on the dry do!  at this stage i'm enough of a spaz in the pool - followed by gasping for breath after each lap as i empty the h20 out of my goggles & cap... at least i'm providing a few laughs for the lifeguards!
