If it's like a couple years ago, the sand run section will be replaced by a short hill, so it's not all good news   Not steep, but you have to go up and around the condos so it's definitely an uphill, twice each way

as for the bike course.  Newpoert Coast is like most of the course, but not the big climb (can't remember the other two climbs).  Most of the backside is rolling like Newport, but there is a definite climb (the first one) that will get your attention.  Nothing like PCH.  Not sure what climbs down there are equivalent, but up in LA i'd say Topanga where it gets steep between PCH and the town is pretty close

LazyRiver - 2010-03-01 8:44 AM This is my first HIM so am pumped (and a little nervous).  I've researched as much as I can on the course (incl. race reports as well some great overviews that several posters)

For any of you who have participated in this California 70.3 before, are there any special or peculiar things that really stand out to you from the course, weather, transitions, etc.?  I'm pretty familiar with the bike course from some descriptions provided, and also know about the potential sand-run (which now sounds like will not be an issue).  But any other "heads up" items related to this race would be much appreciated!

Thanks and hope your last four weeks of training go smoothly!

There can be crosswinds in the first 30 mile and headwinds on your way back to transition, be prepared to possibly fight the wind. There are sections of the old 101 that were in moderate to bad shape last year. With all the rain I suppose potholes may be a problem. Keep your eyes open. I watched several people crash because of potholes and lost water bottles.

Weather may be hit or miss. It could be beautiful or raining, be prepared for both.

Just an FYI, the front 25-30 miles have plenty of bathroom stops and port-o-potties. The inland section of the bike course have bathrooms only at aid stations. Keep this in mind if you need to stop.

The first of the 3 climbs is the steepest. I seem to recall a false flat between the 1st and 2nd climb. It looks flat but your speed will be slower and you'll be working harder.

mrbigheado - 2010-03-01 8:23 AM For all the socal peeps who have done the HIM before, would you say that the Newport Coast hill is a fair representation of the hills we're going to see at the HIM?...hope all the training is going well for all of you...

I have been told by several people who have done the race that Vista Ridge Rd and Ridge Park Rd off of Newport Coast Dr are similar (a little steeper) to the big hill in Pendleton.  Newport Coast Dr is a much longer climb but not nearly as steep.

Any recommendations about wheel set and cassette?  Will a front 1080 be too agressive due to the wind?  Has anybody done the Magic Mountain Half IM and this race? If yes, how do the hills compare?

My friend weighs 165 and did it last year with an 808 front and disk on the rear and did not mention anything about the wind.  I weigh 200 and will have the same set up with a compact crank and an 11-28 cassette.  I do not want to burn my quads out on the hills, but that it me...

Thanks TriAgainJim

That seems like a perfect set up.  I really like the idea of the 11-28.  I was thinking about using a 12-25 but after further analyzing the big hill, your set up makes more sense.  So close........!  Somehow I don't feel ready - but I never do anyway!

How did you do at Surf City?

Surf City is a great race and I beat last years time by 13.5 minutes.  It was going to be around 20 minutes but my hamstring cramped at mile 11.

My swimming and biking need help, I am way behind schedule.  It is going to hurt at Oceanside...

Of all the things that could stop me from going to the race. It may end up being a broken belt that has to be replaced on my car. The place is closed until Monday and if it is alot of money i am screwed out of the race.

Sorry Eric, that sucks!  Hopefully it will not be super expensive.
Will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Here's to hoping we get better weather than at the Desert tri this past weekend.  An hour on the bike in wet, windy, rainy conditions is one thing.  3 hours is entirely a different story.  I feel for those that rode the Gran Fondo yesterday.

How's everyone feeling with 3 weeks to go?  Starting to taper?  Anyone racing the Devil Dog Duathlon on Pendleton next weekend?

What everybody's plans for a long bike and/or run this weekend?  Are you going to try to get in one last long session or start shutting it down tbis weekend?  I'm on the fence...

Sorry about the water pump Eric. Maybe some good luck will come your way and you'll still be able to race. I sure hope so.

As far as my taper goes, it doesn't go until later next week. This weekend is 2:45 run, 4 hour bike with :40 minute brick run on Sunday and the usual speed swim and 2 form swims per week. I will start a bit of a taper next week, I believe. OWS is definitely on the agenda, too. Oh, and I'm trying a caffeine taper. Today is day 2 and I haven't killed anyone yet, so that's a good sign. I've had friends who did the 3-week caffeine taper and then come race day had lots of extra umph when they had a bit of cola or gels with 2x caffeine, FWIW.

Just wanted to give you all still in an update:  I rode Camp Pendleton today and then did my brick run on the strand where the run will be. Here's my blog entry from today's ride. It wasn't completely the course, but on base and over some of the roads we'll be traversing. "This was maybe the most windy bike and run I've had. My speed against the wind was only 10 or 11 mph, then with the wind at my back (have a much better understanding of that phrase now) I was up to 24-25 without much effort. On the run, same thing. I ran along the strand where the 70.3 will be held and running into the wind my pace was way higher than usual. I probably could have leaned into the wind and have it held me at times, seriously. I'm going to check and see what the gusts were. I know the forecast called for 25 to 30 mph winds. Much of my ride was on base, too, so it's just a lot of open space and near the ocean so lots of opportunity for wind. Whew! Whatever doesn't kill ya makes ya stronger, right? I actually feel pretty good....now."

Okay, wanted to add that the harbor was a bit choppy, but not too bad. However, in the little part where we're out in the open ocean for a while, there were some wind blown white caps. No breaking waves, but it was quite windblown surf, which means bi-lateral breathing might, just might help. But I gotta say, I sure hope it's no where near as windy (and it probably won't be) come race day.

On another note, the city is tidying up for the big event. Crews were out trimming palm trees and cleaning up the strand a bit. I usually don't see this in O'side. Oh, the wind had even blown the sand onto the strand and there were rippled sandbars and some sand blowing on the ground. Almost looked like snow. See, it could be worse..it could have been snow!

That's your 70.3 update for today, children. :0)  Carry on.

A collective "gulp" was just heard all across the BT forum...25-30 mph winds?  Yowza!!!  Thanks for the great update though....exciting to hear from someone 'on the ground' there.  See you in a couple weeks!

Eric- still hoping you can do the race!

Not sure but I think a 3 hour ride/ 1 hour run this weekend and then a taper...

I don't know about collective but BIG GULP here!  I had major gusts and showers on my 4 hr ride yesterday and then big hail on my brick run.

Ugh, to think we might have to face that on race day!
But you are right, at least no snow flurries!  *thanks* for the oceanside update...

I'll be riding up through base this weekend.  The plan is to do a 60/10 brick on Saturday, then get in my last 20-miler for Boston on Sun.  Also hoping to swim in the cove on Sunday morning, but I'm not too optimistic on that one.  I'll be on my road bike this weekend, but I'll see how the wind treats the 5.0 wheels.  The good news is that we got the wind this week.  The weather around here can change pretty dramatically, so I'm hoping for the best on race day.  I'll report back with weekend conditions.
