Pro 4541 A farming town in MN | Subject: RE: Team Fall-dippides - November Challenge Baowolf - 2009-11-04 10:08 AM Well, lets see we don't have paved shoulders, or sidewalks, the pavement pretty much ends at or shortly before the edge of the white line on the side of the road. So I try to run a few routes often enough to beat back some of the vegitation (read goathead thorn bushes) that grow right up to the pavement. Then you can pull the thorns out of your shoes with pliers after the run. The groundsquirls make a lot of holes next to the road, so you have to watch your ankles. My longest runs are either to town for church on Sunday or home from church. Or to town and back on Saturdays. I have infinate trails right from my front door, but some of them get pretty chewed by the open range cattle. In the spring there is mud, the cattle walk through it making nice 5 inch diameter holes that then sunbake into a lovely minefield. I have a great 8.5 mile loop that has an initial 800 foot climb with some nice views and then it is downhill for a ways. If the barbwire fence is up you have to subtract a few minutes from your time for getting through it. The 13 mile loop with the meaner hill takes me to a seasonal lake. This time of year it is dirt, but in the spring it has ducks and all kinds of birds swimming in it. It would be tempting to add the 13 mile loop to the 8.5 mile loop for this Sunday for my long run (about 2 miles would be redundant). I need to see how chewed the 2nd trail is, haven't done that one in a while. My shorter runs are once around the block (4.5 miles) or twice around the block. It all depends on how much time I have, daylight etc. I should link some pictures. As for running partners, well... I am not sure there are any. As for music, I need to hear the cars and cyotees and focus on my footing. What an adventure. Sounds like 'The Amazing Race' meets X-Terra... ETA: Adventure race toppage... Master 2055 Santa Clarita | Subject: RE: Team Fall-dippides - November Challenge blujay65 - 2009-11-04 4:05 AM I think I am going to register for a half mary as a training run for the marathon on February. I think it will be a nice distraction. I am going to have to find some new running routes to help keep the boredom at bay. My music helps a lot but so far I have been doing the same route and it's starting wear on me! What do other folks do for long runs? Stay on the same predictable path (good for a number of reasons) or mix it up and do different routes all the time? Just curious. Curious Toppage! Good question .. I joined a local running club and meet and run with them every two week , ususally for the long run . The use a different route every week with water stops every 3-4 miles left there before hand . The pace varies from fast AG winners to MOP like me . I also join them for other workouts and it has really enhanced my enjoyment for the sport . There are trail runs , track workouts , cross country , 5K , 10 mile etc... We have club events that cater to all talents . I surprised myself when i won a 100m heat. Haha I never knew i was a sprinter , all this time i have been trying to be a distance runner ... The other thing i enjoy is volunteering at races and enjoy taking a day off racing to help put a race together . I always run outside , since we have no winter to speak of and I have access to bike trails , there are many different loops available , i also like to run on the streets as that is where most Races are held , this i ususally only do on sunday morning when there is very little traffic. I would say my running off season is the summer when the 80-110F heat makes it really challenging for me to run. My ideal running temp is 50F . I don't use the HR monitor much anymore and dont really want a Garmin to tell me i am not going fast enough .... I much prefer to use fun upbeat music courtesy of my IPOD , relax and enjoy the fresh air and run by feel .

Since we are confessing, I had a calorie packed, I'm sure, cinnamon roll with a cappuchino on the way home from work. As far as long run, I tend to do with a group on Saturday morning. I like running with people, with runs >10 miles. makes time pass quicker! Keep up the good work, team!! |

That way your body is gradually exposed to the cold. Once you are full you dump in the ice. If you try to fill the tub, put in the ice and then get in the shock to the system is just to much for me to handle. |

Usually that feels really good! I aim to have a good magazine around and I don't even fill it so it goes all the way over my quads. Embarrassed to admit. But even that seems to help!! Using bags of ice! Yikes! I can't imagine!! you're very brave! |

For those of you doing the ice baths, how long to you stay in the water-ice? Do you have a certain distance that you run where this becomes a routine post-workout therapy? |

For those of you doing the ice baths, how long to you stay in the water-ice? Do you have a certain distance that you run where this becomes a routine post-workout therapy? I do ice baths because they really work. And I am a huge weenie. So, what I do is first get dressed. I put on tri shorts and a long-sleeved top. Some folks put hats on, too. Trust me, it helps. I also start with just the cold water from the tap in the tub. Get in. Then add the ice. I prefer 2 bags, too, because one or just the ice tray from the freezer melts too quickly. But I will take what I can get figuring something is better than nothing. 10 shivering minutes. (It's pretty amusing because I am a violent shiverer.) No more than 15 minutes. After that, I empty the tub, fill it back up with mildly hot water (not too hot), throw some soothing bath salts in, turn on the jets, lay my head back, and relax for another 10 minutes. That's my reward for shivering. |

Expert 1074 Madison, MS | Subject: RE: Team Fall-dippides - November Challenge To run or not to run? That is the question. I didn't run this morning. Okay. It had more to do with the fact I didn't want to get up at 5 a.m. (I wish I didn't have to be at work until 9 a.m. That's a much more reasonable hour than 7:30 a.m.) At first, I thought I would go ahead and take 2 more days off just to be "safe." But I really, really want to run. I am going nutso. I think I put my shoes and shorts on this evening after work, head out, and if the foot talks, just turn around and come home. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Team Fall-dippides - November Challenge I actually just take a cold water bath. The cold tap at my house is enough to get a nice chill. As stated above the best way to do it is sit in the tub and then turn on the cold water. I don't actually get shiver attacks that way. I do make the water get all the way up to cover quads, hips etc. I usually go 10 minutes + the time to fill the tub. I then take a warm/hot shower. I typically take the cold baths after runs of 10 miles or more. I find that it has great initial benefit on the legs. I also take a snack to get some calories and some fluids. I tend to have a 90 percent improvement in how my legs are feeling pre and post bath. As I say to my wife, ah finally feeling human again. The water only really has to be sub 50 F I think to get good benefit from it. I don't really have access to huge amounts of ice and well my legs get pink and numb enough without it. Day off here, have a lot more running to do this week. |

For those of you doing the ice baths, how long to you stay in the water-ice? Do you have a certain distance that you run where this becomes a routine post-workout therapy? I stay in for 10 to 15 minutes. Really what is relevant in terms of when you need an ice bath is in my mind is how much % of your weekly mileage your long run is. If it is 50% or more then you are really beating yourself up on the long run and an ice bath would be of benefit. Maybe even at 40%. I'm currently building my miles per week in a way such that my long run is not more then 30% of my weekly mileage and at that % although my legs are sore they recover very quickly and an ice bath isn't really needed at this point. I doubt I'll be able to train the volume I want when I'm back to training all 3 sports and keep that 30% ratio. I'm currently running 6 days a week to be able to keep my long run at that magical 30% mark. When I get back to long runs being 50% because I'm only running 3 - 4 days a week I'll start taking ice baths again. I hope that makes sense. |

Are you planning to build to IM and do full maries or stay in the shorter stuff? You would be knocking on Kona's door in a year or two probably. |

Are you planning to build to IM and do full maries or stay in the shorter stuff? You would be knocking on Kona's door in a year or two probably. The sub 5 was on a short course. The bike was shortened at the last moment, but I figure it is equivalent to around a 5:08 on a full Half course. That race was about 18 months after I took up this crazy sport and I was still carrying around a lot of weight so I am really happy with the result. I did do Ironman Canada in 2007 but I had a really bad race. My wife needed a training partner to help her get in all of her Ironman training so I did all my swims and bikes by her side. I ended up training around 8 - 9 kph slower then my pace on the bike and as a result on race day when I tried to go out at my pace I totally blew up on the bike and finished in 13:30. I haven't done a triathlon since and I ended up sitting on the couch till this past August gaining 45 pounds in the process. I think that I'm staying away from the long stuff for the time being. I feel that triathletes (myself included) tend to try and go to far to soon. As a result I completely burnt out. Eventually I want to get back to racing long but I want to spend a few years building my speed and base just doing everything oly and under. Then when I know my body can handle it make an attempt at another Ironman. I'm actually really enjoying the idea of racing short next year. I still plan on building to about 40 miles a week running wise but my prep will be focused on the 10k distance. I will learn to love the track That was probably way more info then you wanted |
