Ugh! Okay, I am going to jump on the cold-weather Whine-Wagon!  I normally don't mind the trainer or the treadmill, but I am just over it all!  And I was sick most of last week.  I'm just feeling better today, but I woke up with absolutely NO motivation.  That's pretty out of character, so I decided that I probably just needed to take a break today.  I don't know if I am a little burned out, or just worn out.  It is supposed to warm up a bit at the end of this week, so hopefully that will lighten my spirits and light a fire under my butt!

jellyfish - 2010-01-11 8:33 PM  I have to admit I've never done the bucket drill, but have seen it. I think it is similar to using "the rack" which my Age Group coach used to torture us with. Basically you get tethered to to this nautilus looking machine and swim away from it pulling weights. This sort of stuff forces you to "find your catch" as it's the only way you can make any good forward progress. It sounds like your coach thinks you have a "windmill" stroke. You want to continually pull still water. Pulling your arm straight down means your pulling moving water so it won't make you move forward as quickly as pulling still water (physics). This is where the "S" or what I like to call "q and p" pull comes in. Take a look at this freestyle catch drill video and this video of freestyle swimming for good examples of "the catch." Your should be getting the most forward propulsion out of the front quadrant of your stroke (the top part of your pull) versus the back part of your pull.

Thanks for the links!  I will check them out right away.  The "still water" concept makes perfect sense to me, but I just can't seem to find it/feel it.

Hello everyone! Back from the deep blue and I've been catching up on the last week of post and I see I've missed a lot.

First and foremost Congratulations Tuffli! Emma is gorgeous!

Megan- those you tube swim drill videos are great!  Should be able to use them in the pool this weekend. I think I have decided to break down and join a masters program next month.

Well training underway wasn't exactly what I was expecting. Unfortunately this particular submarine had removed its treadmills temporarily and only had two stationary bikes and two ellipticals. The bikes were in bad shape so I only did a 1 (1hr) session on them and 3 (45min) sessions on the elliptical with 20 min of hills each session. That was all I could fit in our busy schedule.
I also managed to catch a cold under the water! When we got underway I noticed that about half the crew was sick, so I knew it was inevitable. 160 men in a 560' tube, it doesn't take long for a cold to hit everyone!

Well, Its good to be back, I look forward getting caught up with your training blogs and start getting in some good training myself (I even went out and bought some warm base layers today).

Love the idea! But, since there are a wide range of abilities/experience/race distance focus/etc. lets base it off of Goal percentage. For example:

My goal is to swim 20,000 yards, bike 120 miles and run 55 miles from today through the 31st

Megan,

That is a good idea...if we do it that way, I would feel good about some healthy competition.  It may be what I need to get some motivation!  I know that I am one of the slowest runners and bikers in the group, so it would at least keep me in the competition.

OK - where do we post goals?  i will post in our blog title (short-term goals)..  here would be a bit cumbersome as the pages grow in #s,

- awrite, I posted on my homepage... I think its the easiest way to share

Corrie, you and I can motivate each other from the back of the pack! I can't hang with these speed demons either!

I need some nutrition advice. Not for race day, but everyday. Im not looking for a low carb diet book or anything like that. I am looking for a site or book that has some good nutritional recipies. If anyone has found a particular site or book that has what I'm looking for please let me know!

Alan (and Corrie), thx for joininng - check out the BT Nutrition Blog, there are tons of good info for athletes (and wannabes like me).  I essentially use a lo-carb diet to get to my race weight and then follow a lot of the nutritional advise here,  it boils down to eating more veggies, lean meats and limiting the number of simple carbs (and sugar).  That shouldn't be hard.  I don't look at this like a diet, but as a lifestyle and it becomes easy to do.  Good luck!

Corrie: I'm doing it by time which is what my BT Olympic training program focuses on.  I guess anything goes as long as it pushes you to meet your goals.  Go ahead, take the plunge.  Do you have a training program yet?  You can use one of the free programs here, the difference between paying members and non-paying is that I can go to PLANNED schedule in my calendar and even receive a daily email, but you could print the program and put it into your office/home calendar.  G'luck!

PS  I just realized I broke 500 BT blog postings.  Yay!!!  Took me almost 20 months. I am now an "extreme veteran" - nt sure how much of an extremist tho... maybe cuz I got old extremities - LOL
