On your right | Subject: RE: What are You Afraid Of? I'm terrified of Jaws. No, not sharks. Jaws. Not the Bond villian, the giant pretend shark. It's slowly getting better as I've been swimming more and more. But there used to be times when if I was in a pool, and everyone else got out, I would either have to exit the pool immediately, or I'd freak out, and start spinning in circles making sure that Jaws wasn't sneaking up on me. Yes, I know I'm afraid of a pretend shark eating me in a 20 foot swimming pool. Now I can swim alone at the gym, but I could in NO way do a solo OWS. I couldn't even hang with a kayak spotter and just me swimming. Maybe one day, but not now. Also climbing down ladders really freaks me out. Up is fine, but down is way more difficult. |

Champion 5868 Urbandale, IA | Subject: RE: What are You Afraid Of? cayrip - 2010-05-14 10:51 AM All these snake fears. Wow. As a herpetologist with a passion for snakes, I am always curious about what makes humans afraid of snakes. Studies have been done that show people are very polarized about snakes. They either hate them or love them with very few in betweens. It is thought that primates including humans learn their fear of snakes from adults. You can take a child who has never seen a snake or been told what a snake is by anyone and they are not afraid of it. Same for primates. However, it just takes one experience with an adult to learn the fear. In humans, we can pass this on just by talking about them with our children. Primates typically scold, abuse, kill snakes in front of their young. It is really fascinating and I would love to hear people's rational of their fear. I can't change your minds or opinions about snakes so I won't even try. I just like to hear why. I do have a question for everyone who fears snakes. What about turtles? Studies show an opposite trend with turtles. Most people are indifferent with very few people loving or hating them. Why the difference? From experience...turtle bites hurt a hell of a lot worse than snake bites and never heal very fast when they break the skin and can cause some nasty blood blisters. Snake bites for the most part (excluding venomous species of course) are the equivalent of having your finger pricked for blood. It hurts when it occurs but stops hurting alomst immediately and you rarely notice them the next day. Fascinating stuff and a great topic. Fears and why we have them. My cow fear is completely irrational and I don't really understand it except that they are big, stupid, and can squish you by accident. I have had three bad experiences in my life with snakes. 1. Water Moccasin in Delaware. Jumped at me and tried to bite as we were walking along a swampy creek. Struck my wading boots instead. I was 14 or 15. 2. Rattlesnake - not sure what variety - moved slowly between my legs as I was ready to hack at it with my Machete while a Captain reminded me that I could not kill it because we were on a military base that was a wildlife refuge. We later had a very Marine (and NSFW) discussion about how the military base is more of a Marine refuge than wildlife refuge when the chips are down. 3. Flipping scary looking Bushmaster - hanging his nasty self out of a tree on a branch - just begging us not to see him as we walked by so he could kill me - specifically me, mind you. I didn't mind snakes as a kid. |

Extreme Veteran 3177 | Subject: RE: What are You Afraid Of? This is hard to say for me...There is nothing really physical I am afraid of. I do not like heights but I have and can deal with them. No animals that I know of that really scare me. I do not like bees but that is just becasue I am a little allergic to them (for instance if I get stung on the hand, my hand will swell up for a day or three, depending on how I can treat it.) Snakes, spiders, lizards, wild animals, all fine. I am cautious but I know how to work with them so I am never afraid. I would say though, upon thinking about it, that I am terrified of failure as silly as that sounds. I am the first person in my family to graduate from College with a 4 year degree. Most of my family has trouble sustaining themselves and I am seen as the black sheep in the family as the one who has made something for himself, hence I am actually terrified of ending up like the rest of my family. I want to have a kid (maybe 2) someday and make sure they have all the opportunities I did not have when growing up (though not handed to them on a silver platter). Though I will say I do not handle suspense/scary movies to well. the movie Paranormal activity nearly gave me a heart attack (but for some reason I still watch them...) |

Pro 4578 Vancouver, BC | Subject: RE: What are You Afraid Of? I have an irrational fear of fish. I could never scuba dive or even snorkel. I like fish behind an aquarium, but even the slightest possibility of touching a fish sends shivers up my spine. I had an aquarium when I was a kid, and I couldn't even scoop the dead fish out. I think when I was younger I used to touch minnows and stuff, so I'm not sure when this fear started, but I've had it for quite awhile. |

Tomorrow I have to go have hand surgery and will be first time I have to be put under anathesia (sp?)... Let's jsut say I won't be sleeping much this evening. I pass out when giving blood too and so does my sister. It's not really a fear for me though, just something I know about myself, so I make sure that I am laying down before I have a blood test. I hope your surgery went well. |

I had an aquarium as a child and into adulthood and would freak out if I had to put my hand into the tank. You wonder how I can do an OWS for my triahtlons? It takes a lot of energy and nerves for me to, that is the truth. Snakes + fish + eels = THEY ARE OUT TO EAT ME!!!!! Oh wow, I know how you feel. My fear is totally irrational and I don't think the fish are out to eat me and I know that they probably want to stay away from me, but just having the though of touching them really grosses me out. I prefer open water swims where I can't really see anything. If I don't see them, I can pretend that they aren't there (even when people are fishing in the water). |

Elite 3091 Spokane, WA | Subject: RE: What are You Afraid Of? I have a bit of a fear of heights, but's it's manageable. When I helped my dad roof his house, it took me a while to get comfortable walking around/working up there. Really, I think that fear of heights is a survival instinct. Keeps us humans from falling off cliffs and such. I don't have any of the animal phobias. I respect any animal that could legitimately harm/kill me. In my part of the country that's like bears and cougars--not very likely even if you're in the woods a lot. The other one I find interesting is the fear of dying and the fear of no afterlife. I think that's universal and age-old. The stuff philosophers and theologians have been pondering for millennia. |

Champion 6627 Rochester Hills, Michigan | Subject: RE: What are You Afraid Of? I tried to come up with something, but nothing unconquerable. I'll go with 'no fear'. I'm too old to live in fear, and life's too cool to let it drive me. I'm not walking on eggshells, ever, and there isn't much - for me - that can't be solved head-on. Although, if pressed, it's a toss up between waking up in the morning next to "The King" and a jack collapsing from under a car and crushing me. Neither of which occupy very much of my time. |

Expert 838 West Palm Beach, FL | Subject: RE: What are You Afraid Of? Spiders. They creep me out. I used to be afraid of sharks thanks to Jaws. I cured myself of that one. These days sharks are afraid of me. I'm surprised to see that so many folks are afraid of snakes. Snakes are scardy cats. I chased one yesterday after my AM run in attempt to catch it and show it off to my kids when they came home from school. |

I'm hoping that four years of training will be enough to get me across the finish line at IMKY in under 17 hours. My other fear is that, when I complete my Ironman, it won't be what I expect it to be. Edited by Bruenor 2010-05-14 11:11 PM |
