You do realize that the ball has to meet weight specs that have not changed in god knows how long? I would be willing to wager that it is the continuation of the "globalization" of soccer/football and therefore the increase of parity in quality of footy. I remember seeing an email 8-10 years ago showing how each country played soccer. Much of it still holds true, like Italy with defense only, England with pass after pass after pass, Germany with only one or two passes and a crack into the net, Brasil all over the damn place. However, the minnows have much more exposure these days to international play by playing in some of the better leagues in the world. This exposure leads to tighter defense, at least, that is my opinion. And I think that because of this, the bigger programs are nervous and therefore much more reserved than they used to be in the past. Case in point, the US is no longer the whipping boy they used to be. They really don't have a "style" but in many ways their "style is an amalgam of all of the different leagues that the players are in. Just my opinion. I have absolutely nothing to prove it though. |

Guess we can categorize the styles by regions. The Europeans have more collaboration with their teammates (passing) while the S. Americans usually features one-man shows (the forward would run with the ball, twisting pass the defenders and shoot). I enjoy watching the German style. Very systematic. That is also why the N. Koreans are so mysterious. No one had ever seem them play. Now what is up with Spain? |

Expert 1207 Parker, Co | Subject: RE: World Cup - Spoilers Maybe....I happen to own the game ball from the last Euro Champs - another adidas creation - it definitely feels lighter even if the weight is regulation...in fact on windy days we ( my mens team) don't use it because it bounces and flies much more than the other balls we can use....have not seen this ball yet...should be interesting if I get the chance.. |

The 2008 European cup, which IMHO is tougher than the confederation cup, you know, with it having more than 3 top teams in it.......Spain rocked. So I think it is slightly more than a mild upset when the 2nd ranked team in the world (until recently the top ranked team) and the single most expensive team in the world, (based on player costs) is beaten by Switzerland.....not a draw from a lucky goal, but beaten. however, that has been the way of this cup, it's been poor form from most of the "top" teams IMO, with a few exceptions. doesn't mean it's a mild upset though......... |

Expert 1099 Broadlands | Subject: RE: World Cup - Spoilers and the loss to Switzerland....is that recent or was that in a previous tournament, because surely we should base the expectations on the most recent form....I mean 1938, Switzerland qualified and even beat Germany, and Spain weren't there. so your right, in history it wouldn't have been a shocker, but I promise you, the two Spanish guys that work for me....they are more than mildly upset with what happened here and now :-) well, 20 minutes ago........ |
