Does anyone think using a Road Bike would be a huge disadvantage on this course?

Not if it's all you have.  You'll probably see a bunch of them out there.  You could always slap some clip on aero bars for the race

That is all I have and so it is what I am using.  I did put on some clip-on aero bars.

Had a good weekend.

Saturday, rode two loops of our 25+ mile hill route, plus 3 mile brick.   Sunday, 9 mile run.  Things are on track! Given where my run was two months ago, I'm stoked with it

Hope everyone else had a great weekend.

Great work Chris! Glad to hear that you're feeling well.   I had a solid weekend and did a 1650m TT in the pool this morning.  I never know what my swim will be like on race day.  My average pace this morning was 1:36/100 which is good, but I want better.  I would love to be on the bottom side of 30 minutes on race day, race pace of 1:33/100.

Since my mom is visiting from the midwest, I skipped a 40min run on Saturday to make some extra hang out time.  I think my performance on Sunday confirms that it's okay for me to skip a little bit of running though.

I am hoping to get a TT bike by the race but as of now I am using a roadbike with aero bars.  I used it for lake stevens 70.3 and it was good for the hills.

On the training side have had a horrible cold so hoping to get back to it soon missed a couple days.  I am running about 60-70 minutes and long ride is 3 hours, Swim I am up to over 3000meters.  I am worried about the run.  I think I need to run more as I just dont think I am getting in the distance.  and it sucks because all my riding has been indoors as I am in Oregon and it is super cold and very wet.

I agree with my northwest brother (Seattle here) - cold and very wet.  We are heading to Huntington beach next week for the surf city 1/2M and bringing our bikes with us so we can finally get in some good riding.  Going to ride the course (as far as we can) and make at least one loop of the run course. Swim is good - 3 days per week with the Masters group.

This is my first 1/2 ironman and I have been told and reading that the bike course has a couple of nasty hills. I have a Trek Madone 4.5 pretty much factory stock. Any recommendations on cranks? I believe I have the Shimano R600.

Thanks!

I don't know your chainring sizes, but would imagine that you should be able to get through the course with what you have.  If you need or want to replace anything to get the best gear ratio for the course and your fitness you should look into buying a second cassette to swap in instead of replacing your crankset.  If you take a look at the chainrings they should tell you how many teeth they have, and your cassette should tell you as well.  If you let us know what you're currently running it will be easier for us to tell if you need to make an adjustment.

chrissco -
The Trek Madone comes stock with a 50/34 (compact crank) and 11/28 casette.  Unless you have done something different here, you should have all of the gears you need for the hills on Oceanside (and pretty much any other course for that matter).

Good weekend?

I got in a 60/3 brick on Sat, some climbing up Mandeville canyon, then ran redondo superbowl 10K and swam 2100 yesterday.   Run went well, although I am wondering how I am going to double that plus a bit more in a few weeks, while throwing in the swim/bike

But I have to say, considering a few weeks ago I wasn't sure I'd even be able to run, it's all good.

I have adopted a modified BarryP running plan (over on ST), 3 short runs, 2 medium runs, one long run.  Rather than 4 runs a week with the long run being nearly 50% of the weekly volume.  Going into week 2, hopefully will continue to feel good.

Glad you had a good 10k!  That should make up for whatever happened on friday.

I just wrapped up a recovery week so I don't have much to report.  Training plan said I could have fit in a sprint tri as a tune up, but I couldn't find one.  4 weeks until Desert International, which will be my 1st and only tune up race before oceanside.

Colds suck....

I got somewhat of some workouts in this weekend.  Friday I spent shivering underneath a blanket in bed.  All that shivering has to burn some calories, right?  I like to imagine I was getting in a workout to simulate how I may be shivering for a few minutes after the swim.

Saturday I put a lot of energy into feeling sorry for myself and even more energy into complaining to my wife how my neck, back, and shoulders were sore (maybe from the full body shiver workout from the previous day) and how clogged my sinuses (pronounced "nynuthus") were.  Practiced nutrition intake by doing Dayquil shooters every four hours.

I figured Sunday was best spent moping around and talking myself out of any type of workout.  That didn't take too much energy to tell the truth.  Watched the superbowl and blew my nose every now and then.

But today I managed to get a swim in!!!  Not feeling one hundred percent as of yet, but felt fine during my 1500 meter swim today.  Back in the saddle and sneakers tomorrow!!

Hope you guys are getting some consistent training in.......ltoson

I hear you on the colds. I had an ear infection and that took me out from swimming for a week. Even wearing plugs and a cap I still got it. Back in the pool now though. Today is 20 mile ride all hills. Should be fun. Would be nice though for the legs not to be tired.

Anyone have an opinion on wearing a camelbak for the ride? I have some friends that do love them and some that refuse to.

It's personal.  I couldn't because I get too hot and uncomfortable.  Also I use Infinit so it would be a pain to mix and then fill, and then clean out afterwards, etc.  Some pros do it for IM distance.

If you have a valid reason for why you want to do it, go for it, but I can't see why it's necessary, with aid stations every few miles.

Back to training after 8 days off for surgery (benign tumor from neck). I don't get to swim yet - but I was so happy to get out & run/bike again! The race is sneaking up so fast! I looked at my next weeks of training & my volume is sure ramping up quickly!

Can't wait for race day!

You've got time to get training going again.  Glad to hear your tumor was benign.

If I can't win...I'm going to...wait, who am I kidding.  If I don't die, I'm going to make sure I at least crawl across that finish line.  haha

I did a little snooping around last years results and saw that for my age group only 2 of the top 10 are returning this year.  The age group winner is coming back, but will be racing as a pro, and the 7th place finisher will be back.  I really don't know where I stand right now, but I'm setting my overall time goals at 4:50, 4:30, 4:20, & 4:18  with 4:20 being the main target, 4:30 being a great race and 4:18 being magic.

I'll have more realistic goals after a warm up race on March 6th and then after the weekend of March 19th when I'm scheduled for a 2hr bike/50min run brick on Saturday and a race distance swim TT on Sunday.

Speaking of the 19th...  Next Saturday, February 19th I'm planning on heading down to Oceanside to bike what I can and then run the course.  I'll be driving in from North Hollywood so nothing super early.  I think it takes 2 - 3 hours to drive there so anytime between 10 - 2 would probably be comfortable for me.  Anyone and everyone that is interested in meeting up can let me know what time works best.  There is some rain the forecast that may cancel this for me though.
