mashmead - 2011-01-04 11:53 AM Actually, my A race right now is coming up Saturday so I'll post the first race day strategy question for the group.

Saturday is my first half marathon.  My main concerns center around nutrition and pace.

NUTRITION
For all my long runs (ususally about 1.5+ hrs) I have taken a GU or Shot Bloks and a bottle of water with a NUUN tablet mixed in.  The bottle is a great little thing I picked up at a running shop.  It straps to my hand isn't very noticeable.  I really took these things with me because I THOUGHT I needed them to do well, and maybe I did.  However, last week I did a rather long run just over 10 miles one morning before work.  I didnt think to take the bottle or a gel with me and didn't really need them either.  While not my fastest I would still call that run (it's in my log on 12/29) one of my best to date.  Since then I've been thinking, do I need to race with the bottle or GU at all?  I've only got one run like that under my belt so not a lot to support that idea.  I'm thinking about carrying a GU and the bottle anyways, no harm.  Thoughts?

PACE
Disclaimer: these paces may not be spot on, but are in the ballpark.
Most recovery (very easy) runs are 9-9:30/mile.  Most easy (normal) runs are 8:45-ish.  Uncomfortable (but sustainable) paces start around 7:45 or so.  5k pace is about 6:20.  I ran a 12k a while back (longest foot race to date) and I started way too fast (5k pace) but ended with an avg. of 7:06/mile and stinkin' tired.  So all this to say: I have no idea what to run the half at!  I'm thinking the first half I'll stick around 8:15 and then ratchet it up and hopefully end around 7:15 that way I won't crash early.  Thoughts?

I apprecite any feedback.  I'm confident about the race and absolutely cannot wait for the gun to go off but could use some help fine tuning my race day approach.

Thanks.

The pace for your last long runs was right around 8:40, and your (10K) uncomfy but sustainable is 7:45... I see you have a couple training runs past 13.1 in the last month, so the distance itself isn't an unknown. In that case, I think you're okay for your target early pace, but you might want to monitor closely how you're feeling, and how you think your energy reserves are getting depleted before you make a 1 min/mile jump in pace. I'd suggest slowly pressing the pace, making a more continual "speeding up" over the last several miles. Even then, you're going to want to monitor yourself very closely.

As for nutrition, you're looking at less than 90 minutes, so you won't need to carry much. If you feel better carrying a bottle than trying to grab liquids on the fly, by all means do so. A Gu tucked into your shorts isn't a bad idea even if you never use it.

Thanks for the advice.  I'll keep a close eye on how I feel and push the pace slowly.  I've run most of the course during training so I have a decent feel for it.

lkct01234 - 2011-01-04 7:43 AM I'm going to start periodic discussions/pose questions...feel free to add to the list.

Today's question...what is your "A" race for 2011?  (AKA the race you hope to do the best at/achieve the most...)

And my suggestion: sign up for it!

My "A" race as of now is the TriWaco Olympic Triathlon - July 24th.  I would love to sign up for it now, but will have to wait until June to make sure it doesn't coincide with my daughter's sports schedule.  This would be my first olympic tri!

mashmead - a lot of the big races have pace groups.  I would find a pace group around 8:00 or 7:45 min. pace.  It reallys helps to have a group to help you pace.  You can always leave them later if you are feeling good.  I would not try to go from 8:15 to 7:15.

I also have a small handheld water bottle that I carry on races.  I try to stop very quickly at every other water station and I alternate water and whatever sports drink they have.  The nice think about carrying the water bottle is if I need little sips in between stations I have it.  The water stops feel farther apart towards the end of the race.  Also, don't wait until you are thristy.  It can be too late.  My little water bottle has a little zipper pouch on the handle.  That is wear I keep energy jelly beans so I can pop one in my mouth periodically.  Gu makes me choke when I am running.

I really need to get my schedule put together and get on a training plan, but for now I think my A races will be Callaway Gardens Sprint on June 19th because it is a great beginner race and then a longer tri at Callaway on Sept. 4th.  I haven't decided on a half marathon yet.  I had planned on Nashville at the end of April but the date may not work out.

The longer tri is a 1K swim, 30K bike, and an 8K run.  Is that Olympic distance or what is that called since it is longer than the sprint?

Usually a race like that is referred to as a "super-sprint". It's so close to Olympic distance, I wonder why they don't just tack on the extra .5k swim, 10k bike, and 2k run and call it an Oly?

HNewman - 2011-01-04 2:54 PM The T-Rex Tri in August (end of the three-month T-Rex series, which starts in June) and the Army 10 Mile in October for me! Signups aren't up for either yet (Army goes live in April, T-Rex should be coming along here shortly), but I'll sign up when they're available. Might even talk that other guy into coming with me.

Registration just became available for the T-rex series.  These are unusual in that they happen on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 (yet are full with 800 people)  Scary for me in that I registered for the elite wave (sub 1:15) meeting their requirement with a 1:13:54 last year.  This is sure to scare me into more consistent training!  I'm sure Heather signed up too.

So....I got my schedule for Biggest Loser yesterday.  We start at 5:30 pm on 1/18 with weigh-in and group assignments.  We will meet our personal trainers and nutritionists, as well.  My first nutrition visit is on the 20th and every Thursday after that, for 10 weeks.  I believe that is when we will do our official weigh-ins. I'm ready to get this started.  I'm going to try logging my nutrition on my blog but so much of our stuff is homemade(no store bought dinners) I'm not sure how well it will work.

First log should be the cup of coffee I'm drinking!

DT: I have a bike question.

I have to replace the chain on my bike. I have a dura-ace 10-speed group. Do I need to replace the chain with a dura-ace chain? I’m not sure what kind of chain is on there now.

Would I be losing much in terms of durability (I’m not really concerned about weight at 180+ lbs) if I bought, say, an Ultegra or 105 chain? (Do they make Ultegra or 105 chains in 10-speed?) The cost difference isn't that great, but why pay $60 for a chain when I can get one of comparable quality for $40?

Thanks!

I don’t know if you remember, but you were the one who advised me to purchase this bike in the first place. I bought it used from a friend of mine. It’s been one of the best purchases I’ve ever made.

That sounds amazing!

As far as logging nutrition, do you want to keep track of every calorie, or just track what you eat?

I’ve found the BT nutrition tracker to be really useful and comprehensive, but honestly, it’s time consuming and I find I don’t have the patience to search for every food item in the list after every meal.
I’ve resorted to just tracking what I eat, meal by meal. It doesn’t show calories, fat, etc, but it does help me to keep an eye on what I’m eating.

That's kind of an intermediate distance between sprint and Oly... A stepping stone, of sorts. Standard International distance is 1.5K swim, 40K bike, 10K run, but races will often vary a little bit around those numbers.

About the only difference you'd see is weight -- a few more grams on the bike, and a little more money in your wallet. Performance-wise, I don't think you'll notice any difference. And you'll see more of a durability difference just in chain maintenance than you would between the different groups.

You could also go with a Sram chain and use the master link -- it's a LOT easier for chain maintenance to be able to remove it from the bike without having to replace the pin like Shimano...

Ending at 7:15 does sound ambitious.  I didn't think about the pace group.  We estimated our times at registration so we might be put in a corresponding group at the start.  If not, I'll see what's out there/what develops.  Thanks for the advice.

Hi "kids" just checking in...I haven't been a very good mentor.  But I'm glad there is a lot of chatter!!

Today I go back to work.  It's been almost/over 3 weeks since I last worked and I did NOT want to get up this morning.  Unfortunately my training has suffered not having structure AND having a cold :-(

But I signed up yesterday for my "A" race - 13.1 Chicago...OMG it's 5 months from yesterday!!!

ETA:  My hubby is so smart with bikes....I only understood half of what you asked Jonah!  Kiss

There’s nowhere on the log where you can just log calories. There are tons of apps, books, websites, and so on that list the calories for every conceivable food. You could look them up and then list them in the “Comments” box every day? That sounds like a lot of work though. If you were going to do that, you might as well just use the nutrition log feature in BT.

Thank you for letting me be a part of your group.  I'm reading everyone's comments, but haven't contributed much.  My mantra when stepping off the scale and gaining weight when I thought I should have lost a couple of pounds.  "Focus on the process, not the product."

Thank you for the advice on switching tires...why didn't I think of that?  lol  I do have toe clips because I feel like I can't ride without them and get the same push.  I do plan in the future to get a better bike but for now I will get new tires and get my bike a tune up.

I know I can do the swim...its all mind over matter.

I forget who is doing the biggest looser (sorry) but good for you!!  I wish you much success!

What a great mantra!  I think I will adopt that philosophy.  Don't laugh, but I don't even own a scale.  The only way I know how much I weigh is because we own a Wii!  And let me tell you...that female voice that goes ..oooh when you first step on is not cool!

If anyone looked at my training log today they saw that today was a rough day.  Somedays its tough to get out there!  But I decided that running 2.75 miles even slow was better than sitting at my desk at lunchtime no matter how much it killed me!

Anyone else from CT in our group?

I jumped rope today at the gym for the first time in probably 6 years. Dug out my old "Rocky"-style Everlast leather rope with the wooden handles from the back of the closet. I think it's going to help strengthen my lower legs and hopefully stave off some injuries. I did a bunch of one-minute rounds at a pretty high rpm.

Also did 30 hard minutes on the trainer and some stretches. I'll do some core work after I finish a thing for work tonight.

Hope everyone had a great day. More snow in the forecast for NYC, so it looks like I'll be running on the "dreadmill" this weekend.
