Lisa-

While not necessary, I do find the trainer experience to be better with a trainer tire.

There are several brands of trainer tires.

 http://www.amazon.com/Kinetic-by-Kurt-Trainer-Tire/dp/B00485JSNS/ref=pd_sbs_sg_2

this is one.   They are specially made to grip better on resistance trainers.  I use a continental orange version.   regular tires wear out quickly and make more noise.  They also slip more.     The one issue I have with them is changing tires back and forth.  So I went ahead and bought an additional wheel with the same cassette and just swap wheels when I use my trainer.  Its easier.

jjkatzenberger - 2011-01-05 1:05 PM jlp...here is a pic of the new baby!

I tried...It won't upload...sorry!

Jodi,

I have trouble loading pics into BT messages too.   How I do it is by using an off site picture site.  Like photo bucket.  then click the "insert image icon" and past the link into it.   That seems to work.  Example below:    BTW this is of Ladder one my fav place to swim!!

I teach spin at the Waukesha Y at 9:15 Wednesday morning and at Princeton at 7:30 Saturday mornings. Pi-yo at the Y after spin on Wednesday and 5:30 AM tread and shred at Princeton.

I still want to come to one of your spin classes!  (whichever one uses the star trac NXT bike)   That would be fun!

Nice goals guys

My take on spin class.... is its a great motivator and is much better then just spinning.  will help you be a better biker.  BUT I do think a structured workout with a poowertap ot hrm is even better.  I think people often think they are working harder then they are in spin class.

I dont use a trainer tire but yes I should

ohhh...yes goals for January!

Well...I am going to try to ramp up my workouts before shoulder surgery on the 31st.  Focus will be on increasing mileage as I am still shooting to do my first full marathon on May 1st....(fingers crossed).  Thus far the plan is swim 3x/week, bike 3x/week and run 3-4x/week (including long run, hills, and tempo runs).  I am hopign that I can still get on my bike trainer shortly after surgery and just spin lightly and walk on the treadmill or run in the pool witht he shoulder stabilizer on...let's hope anyways!

my goal for January is to get all my bookwork finished and ready to be turned over the tax preparer.  No dragging my feet.  One more chore off my plate and more time to train..

I'm going to the Pettit sometime tomorrow to run--not sure how long. My ankle feels a lot better. Sunday, I play soccer at night, but I might also swim in the morning.

I am starting an 8 week computrainer class this weekend. It is a weekend long ride, by the end of the 8 weeks we should be up to 2 hours on the bike which should give me a good head-start on my 70.3 training.

I am going to bike in the basement on Sunday. If it warms up a bite more I may take my rain bike out and ride up the hill.

I want to go on my first ride of the season. It looks like 40% chance of rain and 21 mph winds... ugh Undecided

If not I'll try to go to the gym and spin it indoors for at least 45 min.

Well I wanted to run. But nursing an injury so thinking swim in the am, and try the computrainer on Sunday and see if that does not aggravate anything.

(My mom is having a hip replacement and my dad needs a lot of help )  Hopefully  I can get in some good running when I am out there.

For the weekend....I was planning on swimming on Saturday and a run, but I am nursing a nasty head cold compliments of my kids.  I will just have to see how I am "breathing" tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Hope you all have a great weekend and accomplish your goals   I'm doing a 1mile "test" run today to let my coach know some stats (ave HR, ect) and then a 60 min trainer ride.  Tomorrow is a 75 min run.  Honestly, may mail goal for the weekend is to kick back and watch a movie or two, which I haven't done for long, long time!

Do you have a suggestion for beginner bike equipment? I am lucky I live in the popular biking community of Austin, Tx. I don't have alot to invest right now. There are a couple of shops that have rookie packages. One with a Felt and one with a Cannondale. I have heard good things about the Cannondale frame. I am not hung up on the brand - juts have no idea what I am looking for. I am currently a larger rider trying to get smaller (lol) any suggestions would be helpful. I am sure they can help in the store but I don't want to be SOLD if you know what I mean.
Thanks

For what its worth.  If I were you I would buy a used bike first.  And not spend too much on it.   Later on you will REALLY know what you want and more than likely want to buy something expensive.  If you already have a decent investment in a bike, it will make it tough later to get the bike that will be just the right thing for you.   Yes for now, don't get caught up in brand. Just find a good deal on a used bike that fits you and is in great shape.

Sigh--not much of a weekend. Friday/Saturday spent in airport/airplane limbo (en route back to Vietnam). As of midnight last night, I'm back in Saigon. (So now my workouts will be 12 hours ahead of everyone else!) It's Sunday AM here. Felt too groggy to deal with traffic on the parkway (access to bike loop), so did an easy 50-minute run instead. On the scale of how I usually feel after these airplane ordeals (18+ hours of flying); not too bad. Trying to get over jetlag and back into work/training routine next week.

I agree with Dave. I got my first bike since college in May 2009 - it was a road bike. I didn;t ride it much that year because I was in full on marathon mode...but put aerobars on it and started to ride it last winter.  Raced with it all year which helped me learn A LOT about bikes. I had a much better idea of what to look for when I got my tri-bike.

How was everyone's weekend??  I got to ski with my daughters for a couple hours  yesterday.  I have twins and they are so different especially when it comes to sports.  It was the first time out this season for the more athletic one...she kept saying "that looks too hard..." and then before we could catch up she was already going down the hill   too funny!

Got to ride 1:30 on the trainer this morning...nothing like going 20+ miles without actually "going" somewhere
