OK, Thanks.

I guess then I would see how the runs go mid-week of the 1/2.

Good idea about the bail out plan . .. maybe I can figure out a way that if there is any pain, I can hog-tie myself so I don't continue to run . . .   Racers are not the smartest when it comes to listening to your body.

You are feeling better?

Wind was bad here, too. I only did 13 miles. I'll be swimming tomorrow as well.

Finally, yes.  First time I've had a cold all winter, had to happen while I was at camp.

One of the things I'm always reminding my students is that they have to be willing to work outside of their comfort zones in order to grow. So, while much of the verbiage here sounds Greek to me and while I'm feeling quite out of my league in regards to experience, I'm going to keep coming back here (outside of my comfort zone.)

Story: I've unfortunately never stuck with any exercise regiment for more than 3 months or so. About 8 months ago, I heard an acquaintance talking about a triathlon she was training for and felt butterflies in my stomach just listening to her, thinking to myself, "I wish I could do something like that." A few weeks later, the thought was still in my mind and I decided I could do something like that. So I went down to a track by my house and just about keeled over dead after running one mile. Seven months later, I ran my first race (a 10 mile run) at a 9:44 pace (a good pace for me) and am ready for another.

Family Status: A really fabulous husband and four kids.

Current Training: I've just been setting weekly goals for the last five months or so. Nothing too hard - just something 4-6 times a week to keep myself going. Yesterday though, I started a triathlon training program that I downloaded here which gives me 17 weeks to train for my first triathlon. In fact, yesterday was the furthest I'd ever biked (21.6 miles) and I followed it up with a painful 3.2 mile run. It was harder than I thought it was going to be but at least I know I can do it now. I'm not at a point where I care about time - right now I'm just focused on distance. I'm loving the running, enjoying the biking and suffering through the swimming. (I have to remind the life guard on duty that despite all the choking/gasping/flailing about, I'm not drowning.)

2010 Races: None.

Planned 2011 Races: Already ran the 10 mile Pear Blossom here in Medford, OR a few weeks back and am registered for an olympic tri in Portland, OR this August. Feeling like I want to get some other stuff on the list though because I think it might be the ticket to my motivation.

Everybody was new to the sport and the language at one point and we're all still learning.  A 20 + mile bike and a 3.2 mile brick is a big workout.

Seeing that so many people are trying new things this year (first tri, first IM, first marathon) I wanted to share my first tri in 2006 -- it was the Niantic Bay Sprint, a .5 mile ocean swim, 13 mile bike and 3.1 mile run.  The swim went well for me, got out to the front of wave and passed people from the wave before.  What I didn't realize is that when I got out of the swim there was an incredibly steep hill leading up to T1.  I ended up slogging my way up the hill, trying to take off my wetsuit as I went.  Into T1 and off on the bike, I started really quickly without realizing that the bike course had some serious "hills."  Despite the fact I had a triple crank, it was really tough getting up what really were gentle slopes.  I finished out the bike and headed out on the run, that was more of a run, walk, try to run some more.  At least the course was super flat.  I finished the race in 1:35 and change and was so proud of myself and totally hooked on the sport.  Last year my time on the course was 1:18 and if I get to race it this year, I'm going sub 1:10.

What was everybody else's first tri/run/race experience?

Oh good question and good first tri story.

My first tri was several years back.  Can't remember the exact year, but we had moved to Southern California and I started running with a local running group.  I met a girl who showed up for the first time the same day as me.  We started training together on a regular basis and signed up for a marathon.  That was back in the day when I was running mostly, I did quite a bit of outdoor biking and spin class, but no swimming at all.  She had done a tri the year prior and talked me into doing a local sprint that was a pool swim.  I don't know that I could have convinced myself to do a lake or ows tri as my first.

So we signed up and I calculated that I needed to be able to swim 16 lengths.  I started swimming, couldn't hardly get 2 laps in without stopping.  But I kept going and built up to those 16 lengths.  Race day came, I was a nervous wreck.  But I got in the pool and swam.  They had people counting and the person counting for me miscounted and I had to do an extra lap.  I thought about arguing that I was done, but figured it would be quicker to just swim.  Transition was super slow, I knew nothing about being speedy, and really wasn't "racing".  I headed out on the bike, which was a 3 or 4 lap loop that had some rolling hills, nothing too bad.  Swapped shoes and headed out on the run, which hurt - bad!  I think I was the 3rd female overall, but didn't even it until days later.  There were no awards except for the top female and top male.

It was such a low key event, but I had such a great time I knew that I wanted to do another one.  Which I did, a few weeks later they had another local sprint with a lake swim.  I survived that and did place 3rd in my age group.  They did give awards at that one, can't remember what I got though.  But again, I was hooked.

We moved back to Georgia the following year and I didn't do another tri for a couple of years.  I was too intimidated, the races around here were much bigger than the two little ones I did.  But I did start doing them again a few years ago, various distances, and really am glad I met that girl who talked me into my first tri.

Here is mine, it happened about a month before i met Kelly

i must say it is a great read and has some funny parts. If you are new or wanna hear about a total disaster, this is a report for you to read.

i go back and read it every few months, it reminds me of how far i have come with the help of people like the ones we have in this mentor group.

Here's my first and only

It was last July and I had fun, despite being a nervous wreck, feeling like puking during the run, and choking on pool water because I laughed while my head was down during the swim.

My first tri was last year in July at age of 54. I had covered this event for the past three years for my newspaper and kept saying I would do it, but..... I saw a picture of me and my camera on the trio site and was appalled at the fat old lady I saw. Training started in late November. I remeber being sick to my stomach at the thought of the lake swim. Water was just over 60. But the other athletes were great and encouraging. I wanted to quit the swim after about 200 yards, but told myself no one else was quitting so suck it up. I was so happy to finally look down and see the boat ramp under me and stand up. I had a great ride and did what I could on the run. I was barely doing a 5 k with out all the other stuff so I was happy just to finish. I actually took second in my AG and I would have taken first if I had done Athena so I felt great. I immediately signed up for one in Sept and beat my first time by a minute despite a brutal bike ride portion. This year three including doing the one with the brutal bike ride twice.

I think I'm the only one in this group who hasn't done a triathlon yet.  I'm a complete newbie

I peed my pants during the Turkey Trot last year   I'm one of those people who pees a lot when nervous, and I couldn't find a bathroom before the gun went off.  Started leaking urine around mile 1......ended up with lots of chafing.  LOL  It was snowing, so I don't think people noticed.  Really makes me nervous for the HM.....

When you start doing tris, its becomes a point of pride to pee on yourself during the bike and run (everyone pees during the swim, there's something about neoprene that causes that).  That's one reason the bike handlers at IMs always wear gloves.

Last week at camp, several of the girls decided to pee on their bikes rather than using the out houses.

I HAVE NEVER peed in the swim yet . . . can't force myself too.  I find it pretty gross to pee on the bike (which I haven't done) but I understand it saves time and keeps the body moving instead of letting lactic acid build up.  Plus, I couldn't imagine trying to having a discussion about getting my body to pee on a bike . . .

During my half aquabike last year I had to go pee before the gun went off and couldn't during the swim and didn't hit the porta potty in transition, so held it for another 3 hours . . .
