nor could I figure out how to play the video in full-screen mode and have the horizontal TR data at the bottom of the screen.

Get everything setup (TR in horizontal mode, at the bottom etc.) then put your player in full screen mode and hit "F11". Or you can put it in full screen mode and alt-tab over as well (I think).

Worked great! This is just too cool for school.

I just did the 20 min test this morning.   My legs are sore now .

One thought, it tells you durring the test that it will calculate either your FTP or LTHR.  It would be nice if it would calculate and give you both.

While I'll be using power for the training I do with Trainer Road, I won't have that when I'm riding outside.... yes, I still plan on doing some of those outdoor rides.

Ya, we agree. The release on Sunday will have an update that will calculate both your FTP and LTHR when you do a power test.

We just take the average HR for the 20 minutes and multiply it by .95. I'm not sure which person is you, but if this is you, then your LTHR is 141.

You found me!

Since you are looking at it, I had a problem with my previous ride with the power/speed spikes so I adjusted my cadence sensor this morning.

I'm assuming the variance I'm seeing now is just me not being smooth and has nothing to do with the previous spikes.... but wasn't 100% sure if that was the case.

Thanks ... did I mention my legs are sore?

Edited to fix closing quote.

Yes, you're right. The variance you see now is just due to not being smooth. That should improve if you work on it.

My HR strap kept dropping out. I had also turned on the Joule and it did not drop out on there. The dropouts seemed to be position specific, when I was upright it was fine and down in the horns it was not. I need to try moving the laptop, and possibly it was also interference with the wireless keyboard?

You might have an old battery. Move the joule next to the computer and see if it drops out there too. Check out this: http://support.trainerroad.com/entries/20648397-how-do-i-get-the-be... It could TOTALLY be that wireless keyboard too. Try moving that and see if it helps.

I need a lot of practice at dialing in the correct gear/cadence to match power. I was all over the place. I'm sure that's normal for someone new to training with power. I'm looking forward to comparing rides in another month and seeing progress.

Yes, that is very common to get fluctuations like that. Over time you'll become a smoother and more efficient rider. I'm glad you like it!

Well I can confirm the problem with the HR strap was due to interference with the wireless keyboard. I had no dropouts tonight. Sweaty but fun.

Went to my LBS today to pick up the Garmin speed/cadence sensor.  Wound up not getting it because they were charging twice what Amazon had it listed for.  I'm all about buying local, but I'm also a cheapskate.  Guess I'll have to wait til it arrives next week.

Yup all for buying stuff locally except when they just don't carry the items OR they want to charge twice as much.........

Tried this out last night and I am impressed.  Thinking perhaps I can forgo the Computrainer purchase (and buy food and mortgage payments, etc).  Quick question about using a trainer that isn't listed....Does it really matter?  If I don't normally train with power and don't have a powertap for use when outside, then does it really matter what trainer I select from the list, as long as I'm consistent and keep that setting?  If the numbers don't match real-life, but I keep with them consistently, then theoretically the actual value doesn't matter (it could be letters or colors), just as long as I use them as a level gauge and stay consistent in their use..??  Yes??

Nate, I did my 20 minute FTP test today and love the software.  I am a novice biker (and triathlete) so using the software takes out the guessing I need to do following a written plan.  Two questions though:

1.  I saw others having spiking issues, but mine seem to be really all over the place.  I'll try readjusting my magnet, but is there a smoothing option coming?  My FTP was lower than expected and I think it was due to my pwoer jumping from 70-300.  Yeah, not smooth.Yell

2.  I downloaded my version about a month ago.  Will we be prompted automatically when updates are available?

I have the same issue and this is what I think the situation is, hopefully Nate will correct me if I am wrong.

  1. You don't have an accurate power number because TR doesn't know how much resistance is on the trainer at any given point.  For this you are right in that it doesn't matter as long as it is a point and you know if you increase, or decrease. unless you compare numbers to other cyclists.
  2. More concerning is that TR doesn't know the correct power curve.  This means that if you go 1mph faster it might be the results of a 5 watt increase or a 50 watt increase depending on the trainer... ok the numbers are probably closer together than that, but you get the idea.  You still should theoretically know that you increased power, but you might feel like you are working a whole lot harder, but only report a minor increase, or vice versa.

NewClydesdale is correct. The problem is it's not a 1:1 relationship for fluid or wind trainers.

If you have a mag trainer, its usually pretty linear, so you would be good picking one of those.

What trainer do you have though? E-mail us at [email protected] and we'll try to add it. Some manufacturers have sent us curves when we have asked for them.

Does your workout look like this?
http://support.trainerroad.com/entries/20668756-why-do-i-get-speed-...

If so, it's a magnet issue. Smoothing wouldn't really help in this situation.

If you're just jumpy in general (which is common for people new to training with power) then I recommend trying to just smooth it out. It's hard at first, but you'll become a better cyclist.

We're going to add some 3/5 sec smoothing in the future too, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

And yes, the software will auto update when there's a new version that comes out. We'll be releasing one on Sunday as long as all of our testing goes well.

^^^ Thanks for showing what a magnet issue looks like. I'm no where near that. It's just me... working on my spin.

... and it's funny we talk about smoothing because if that is me, then I would be more inclined to work on that myself than to see a less jumpy line. When I get tired toward the end of a set I tend to mash more and power jumps around more... which makes me concentrate more and smooth out my stroke, and my output.

Nate, I want to thank you for you support on this forum.  As a novice biker, I really like the software and it makes me want to head down to the man cave to hop on the trainer.  Most plans I looked at I really did not understand the temrinology or workouts.  With TR, I appreciate the visual cues and find it very easy to follow along.  Now I just have to smooth out that stroke!  I hope you have a very successful business and I am recommending TR to anyone who will listen.

Nate,

Email sent.  And to reiterate what others have said:  Thank you for just being on this forum and answering questions.  Customer service is a lost art and a company who takes the time to actually get feedback and talk with its customers is worth its weight in gold.  Well done on both your product and your attention to us on BT.

Thanks

That is great you were able to add syncing with the Sufferfest videos! Considering you're doing this nights and weekends the progress is impressive. Good luck!

Grats on going live AND getting the sufferfest mode implemented.

I paid up, then downloaded and unzipped sufferfest, and imported it.  But I ran out of time to get my first ride in last night/this morning.

I'll be trying it out tonight.

Quick thought though.... I'd suggest an prompt before saving workouts that are under 3 minutes, or have recorded no data.

Ordered my ANT stick just now...can't wait to get started.

Now, I have an unlisted mag trainer (Tacx Cycletrack Speedmatic) but saw that mags have a somewhat linear curve, so could I use a different TACX mag trainer that's listed and expect it to be reasonably close?
