You ladies are very inspiring! What's a little clumsy, I keep falling and hurting myself pain compared to what you are dealing with.

Ran two laps around the gym at the Y with my 3 year old gym students. Those little dudes are fast! Not much but it is a start I hope.

Hope everyone is feeling good today.

You runn-ed! You said you were scared to run, you ran, that's awesome! (since you weren't running before, that's going from zero to infinity despite scared sitting between them. YES!)

Oh that is harsh. and so disappointing. Ouch in every way. Good luck, browse this thread for ways of getting through the next few weeks (even profitably!), and hang out with us. We're here for/with you.

freer - 2011-11-07 4:53 PM For you Helen... http://www.cafepress.com/+knee_surgery_ornament_round,439745186Get well

Thanks......

I do not actually have a new knee.

Maybe I should ask for a new knee.....the recovery time for a TKA is waaaaaaaay less than for what I am going through.

I am beyond miserable and cannot seem to help it.

Worried that this surgery did not work and that I will still not be able to even do something as simple as go up the stairs....let alone anything as fabulous as walk for any length of time or RUN.

Worried .Scared. Frustrated.

Just plain miserable.........

All very understandable. :-) Just for my knee--not counting all the stupid other issues that have come up b/c of  it since I was a kid--there's been numerous debridements, several chondroplasties, a mfx (failed), several partial (and finally a total) meniscectomies, a DFO/leg realignment (followed by a medial femoral shaft fracture). And each and every time, it can be frustrating, aggrivating, sad, and seemingly neverending. But you WILL always come out on the other side--eventually. You may have to adjust or figure out where to go or how to make things work, but you WILL get there.

The recovery from my DFO was already going to be long, but the medial-side fracture made it even longer--and I had to stay in bed. I remember about two thirds of the way through, just wanting to WEEP I was so frustrated. More than anything, I was TIRED. Tired of everything. Tired of one injury/surgery/issue after another...and tired of the rehab to try and "fix" stuff. Tired of readjusting priorities. Tired of being optimistic. I was just tired of it ALL. I wanted to be some slobby, chain smoking, inactive person who didn't give two sh1ts about anything b/c that would be so much easier.

But it does get better...and then, one day, you're looking on the other side of it, and while you still have setbacks and disappoinments and bad moments, they don't seem to stand out as much b/c the gains and achievements (even the smallest of ones) just shine that much brighter. It's like that old optical illusion--the "Old lady or young debutante?" image. Instead of seeing what you can't do or what isn't working, you see what you can do and what IS happening.

Hang in there! :-)

Timely thread for me - first visit to this site to record any exercise since mid-September as I have been battling a lower back injury since August.

On the bright side it seems that ART treatment is starting to have a positive impact and I was able to do 2 miles today - not the <1:50 half mary I had targeted for the 19th of this month but it is a start, or re-start as it were.

I hope everyone heals soon.

I would higly suggest NOT getting sick 2 days before your ironman.  I was ever so fortunate I was able to participate even if it was pathetically slow.

Everyone should red teh Long run by Matt Long. a NYC fire fighter who was riding his bike to work and was hit and pinned under a bus.  His injuries were truely horrific but he came back to finish IMLP

What a great thread! I sure could of used it a few months ago. I am new to the sport and have really enjoyed the people and the training. I spent the first 5 months of this year completely dedicated to doing my 1st HIM, followed the 20 week program and felt very ready, I wasn't going to be fast, but I figured I would be in the 6 hour range. Then less than a month out I developed a severe and sudden case of sciatica. After trying anything and everything to correct it I was told 5 days before the race, on my Bday, that I should not run or risk permanent damage, talk about a swift kick to the family jewels! Fortunately my wife was there to think straight for me and asked the Doctor if I could swim and bike and he said sure. Competed in the aquabike, wasn't pretty but made it through. Now 2 months after surgery I am back to running! It was sooo depressing going to functions with my Tri club and hearing about everyone's races and training! fortunately it seems like all triathletes that I have had the pleasure of meeting are extremely encouraging, even to an overweight newbie like me. Take the time to heal and relax and know that you will be back out there before you know it.  AS my father in law was famous for saying "this too shall pass"

I've joined the rank of the sickies. Last week I got a cold. No big deal, but it made me miss the last weekend many of our trails are open for mountain biking.

This week was the week I was supposed to start bike commuting full time.

I thought I was getting better. Now, I've got a full blown sinus infection. 2 years ago I had sinus surgery because I was getting sinus infections every 3-4 months. This is the first sinus infection I've gotten since surgery, but what is really worrisome is the almost constant nose bleed I've developed. It's low grade, though occasionally it turns into a faucet. I'm calling my ENT first thing in the morning.

At least I got one day of bike commuting in.

Here's a picture I took with our webcam the evening after surgery, two years ago. I feel worse now, though I had some awesome pain killers then.

ETA: I could use that nose jock strap at this moment. When she was making me throw it out, I told my wife it might come in useful someday. Now who's right?

I was pretty healthy this year until a really bad intestinal bacterial infection (Shigella) a few weeks ago.  I'm still not 100% but geting better.  I'm trying to rest as much as possible.  I do a lot of sleeping.

Get better soon everyone!

Note to self: don't go to the pool after the "mommy&me" classes!

I've been pretty down on myself the past few months;  I had a solid training block for 6 months where I didn't miss a workout, was up to 10k yards swimming / 25 miles running / 100 cycling, then everything went to crap:

  • August 24 - Burning sensation in Peronius Brevis, physically could not run (tendonitis)
  • August 25 - Pop in triceps during swim (strain or tear)
  • October 18 - Pain in shin area after hard bike ride (strain or tendonitis)

I tried recovering from these, and spent hundreds on ART and massages.  The sad thing is I haven't seen a doctor for one.   I couldn't get an appointment for 2 months, so I never scheduled one and had to rely on self diagnosis, which may be a bad thing if its a partial tear.

Despite all the time I've missed I've decided to give IMAZ a go.  I really would regret not doing it, and if my shin doesn't act up on the bike I can hopefully walk the IM.  My main concern is the shin, because it is very painful and I'm not sure I can cycle through it.

After this I just need to find out why I'm chronically hurt; I'm in this sport for the long haul but I need to find out why I can't go a whole season without an injury.

Well, I'm joining the ranks it seems. At week 3 of my marathon plan, I finish my long run. a few hours later my right knee hurts so much I can barely drive a car, which was highly inconvenient for a 5 hour trip this past weekend. Its been 8 days and it still hurts to the point I'm icing it at my desk at work today. Not sure what a doc is going to do with this, so I'm just going to rest it for another week.

With that, I'm going to have to downshift from thinking of a marathon to a half mary. Disappointing, but I'm going to have to roll with what ever happens. Also will try some more pool time since I've ignored swimming for a while.

Have you checked you IT band?  I always go on the foam roller when I have knee issue for me its usually a tight IT band.  If it is you just need to fix that and all your problems go away.

Arrrgh, I usually NEVER get sick, but I'm working on the second cold in a month!! I work around kids all day and they've all been sick. I'm almost wondering if I've been overtraining and hurting my immune system.

This time around I'm taking a break from all cardio. I know I CAN work out with above-the-neck symptoms, I just really think my body needs to take every ounce of energy it can salvage and direct it toward swift healing.

I'm on day 3 of it now, with lots of rest, vitamin c, fluids and sambucol. I can deal with the sore throat and sniffles but I HATE feeling like all the energy has been sucked out of me. Hopefully it's gone by thanksgiving. I really really really wanted to PR my thanksgiving 10k. I was sick for my last race - a half marathon - and struggled with it quite a bit.

Oh yeah, and I signed up to run the Girls on the Run 5k tomorrow morning, and I still will if I don't feel awful. I'm signed up to be a running buddy if they need one, which means I'll be paired with one of the program participants - a 4-6th grade girl. As long as they don't pair me with a fast one, I'll be ok. (Last fall my running buddy ran a 50 minute 5k!) If I don't get a buddy, I'll run it nice and easy and cheer all the girls on.
