Which Plan???

So as it turns out, Sunday I'll be exactly 16 weeks out from my Oly, a perfect time to start an actual plan I suppose. Those of you that have e-known me for a bit (and those of you who don't) chime in and suggest a plan for me. Either the 2x/week, 3x/week, or one of the -focused ones (run, bike, swim). If I had to choose, running is certainly a limiter for me in terms of speed (and some endurance). While I'm not fast in any discipline, I'm definitely at the back of the pack in the run at a 10min/mile 5k pace on a good day.

After looking through them on here (the freebies), I think I'd want to switch up the swim days. My gym has lots of water aerobic stuff going on M-W-F and those seem to be the swim days on all of the plans (either M-W or M-W-F). Would you swap something or just start the plan 1 day later, like begin it on Tuesday instead of Monday?

Steve I'd roll with 3x a week, and maybe throw an extra run workout in somewhere.

Steve - I agree with Scott, and swim on days when you can get a lane. Trying to maneuver around people won't make for a productive swim workout.

I you have extra time, I would go with additional biking.  One, biking has a positive effect on run fitness (and not so much vice versa), two you're at less risk of injury if you "add" biking than if you add running and 3 you'll get off the bike feeling fresher, which will allow you to run to your potential.  Really you should looking at a 5:1 ratio of bike:run volume.

So still the 3x plan and add biking where I can? OR do the bike- focused, which is 3x bike, 2x run, 2x swim I think?

NO WAY! Way too hard a course. I whine about the 2-2.5 hrs of biking I get from Kelly! I don't know what I was thinking when I was trying to get into IMAZ! Since I am local down in Chicago, I have tons of people I know that do it every year, so we try and support them. My tri club tries to get as many people as possible to as many races as possible to support people!

I would do 3x a week and if you have more time, add in more biking (either in the form of longer bikes or more bikes).  If you find yourself short of time, I would drop a swim.

I was up early for a trainer ride, but my brake pads kept slipping.  I couldn't figure out wth was going on, so I ended up having to squeeze in my ZR run instead, as I was running out of available time to train.  I'll have to do the trainer ride later this morning.  I was able to stay within the HR limits for the ZR run, but it was tough.  When will it feel natural to train this way?

I can't wait until it's warm outside again.  I really have to get out on the roads and start riding.  It's a different beast for me.

Because our bodies are meant to carry offspring, so we have naturally higher percentages of body fat than men.  Pro women are cut and buff, but I would guess their bf % to be on the very, very low end, and that's why we see all the muscles in their legs and abs.....I bet most of them would have a difficult time getting pregnant if they wanted to because of it.

Let me take a serious look at your logs.  Its tough to go by pace because so many things can affect pace.

Thanks for this. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out.

Its tough to nail down a pace, first becaues so many things affect pace and second because with the run:walk the pace is a bit off.  Until you feel up to doing an LT run test, I would use something like the Maffetone method to set an aerobic heart zone.  Maffetone recommends that 180 minus your age is the top of your aerobic HR zone and that the majority of your runs should be just below this number.  While its not perfect (and obviously HR is an individual thing) its a good place to start out.

kidtri33 - 2012-04-03 3:11 PM

Name: kidtri33 (Larkin), age 33

Story: 2012 is my first time to be doing tri's. I was a runner before this and ran my first half marathon last year. I have alway been interested but swimming kept me away. I have played sports all my life and always look for new challenges. So my challenge is to eventually do a IM. I thought this mentor thing will help me prepare for my first tri in May. Of course just training has gotten me hooked! So being newb I am hear to listen and learn and share my experience along the way hoping maybe I can help some one as well.

Family Status: Married, three kids (Wesley 12, Angie 10, Grayer 11 months).  Soccer kids keep me busy as well.

Current Training:Got into a master swim class about a month ago and swam a total of 1700 yds for the first time today! Finally feeling comfortable in the water. I have of course been running a while but dealt with ITB issues and finally feeling my legs come back. Bike is new to me and I am borrowing while I "test" out tri's.

2011 Races:  Journey 4 A Cure 10k, Savannah Half Marathon

Planned 2012 Races: Irish Sprint 10k, Marine Corps Marathon, Power Sprint Triathlon, GW Parkway Classic, Spartan Race, hopefully another sprint and an olympic/international distance.

Welcome aboard.  Here's the "official" group list (and we're officially closed).
