Subject: RE: MAY "You MAY Pick" Challenge--ALL WELCOME!Introducing the teams (so far) ... Manatees Manatees are adorable, huggable creatures who swim a lot (but must come up for air) and can eat 1/10th their bodyweight daily. However, if they have thick grey skin, are related to elephants (as are their Pacific cousins, the dugongs), hang around the coasts and rivers of the middle part of the Americas and coastal Northern Africa, they also constitute several protected species of marine mammal .
Great White Sharks
There's now an attempt to "rebrand" these marvelous, powerful creatures as simply "White Shark" (especially since there's no "Lesser" or "Small" White Shark). The white shark is an endangered species and has fallen victim to overfishing, other nonsustainable fishing (drag nets et al), and water pollution. Blacktip Reef Shark
These are my very favourite sharks ever! I call them "sea beagles" because of their beautiful black, white, and tan markings. I have seen several in the wild (the above is not my photo but the below is, taken at a Jakarta mall of all places). While still common to the Indo-Pacific subtropical and tropical waters, they are Near Threatened because of overfishing. They are now also found in the Mediterranean, having migrated there by way of the Suez Canal. (015.sharks2 (Small).jpg)Attachments ---------------- 015.sharks2 (Small).jpg (48KB - 18 downloads) |
