I'm in! I'll be an honorary Manatee for my first BT challenge, unless you need to move me to another team for some reason -- I'm just trying to even out the numbers.

My two goals are for mind and body.  (Soul will have to wait until next month, I guess.)  I fell off of my strength training about a month and a half ago, which led to a downward spiral in nutrition and general well-being.  So goal number one is 20 strength training sessions in May, at least 4x/week.  To feed the mind, I will aim to read 10 Chinese-language newspaper articles.  Back when I studied Chinese more seriously, that would have been a piece of cake.  Now, however...well, let's just say life has gotten in the way.

Welcome, Jeff! Very happy to have you as a Manatee! We're the coolest.

Heh ... you could always read, say, an elementary school's newspaper articles

PLEASE DO THE FOLLOWING TO OFFICIALLY JOIN THIS CHALLENGE:

Go to this link

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0An7ZkKfHG1L1dDlZSkhxOWxWbHBjRTFtYjI0U0lNMmc

And fill in your goals as per those already signed up. If you have any questions, post here or PM me!

Please finalize your goals by May 7. After that you can change your goals UP but please post or PM me if you are going to change them DOWN as a result of illness, unnamed but important circumstance, withdrawing from challenge, etc.

If you are a MANATEE (in the Manatee mentor group) please put your name under the MANATEES. (Anyone is welcome to be an honorary Manatee for the purposes of this challenge, too!)

If you are not a Manatee or don't wish to be (gasp! who can imagine?), please select one of the SHARK teams to be on.

Thank you!

Due to the delightfully significant numbers of folks who have signed up for this Challenge--THANK YOU!!! WELCOME!!!! So happy you are here --we now have THREE TEAMS:

1) Manatees

2) Great White Sharks

3) Blacktip Reef Sharks

I simply split the Sharks into top half and bottom half to create teams; if you want to be on another team, feel free to move your name to the team you want to be on*** THROUGH MAY 7. After that, no more changes (to teams, goals, or new signups unless there are extraordinary circumstances and/or you bribe me with Pop Tarts).

***PLEASE, if you have any doubts about how to do this, PM me with what change you want. (Admittedly I've already screwed up the spreadsheet enough, so I'd rather have it remain so instead of possibly getting more screwed up). Thank you!

Introducing the teams (so far) ...

Manatees

Manatees are adorable, huggable creatures who swim a lot (but must come up for air) and can eat 1/10th their bodyweight daily.

However, if they have thick grey skin, are related to elephants (as are their Pacific cousins, the dugongs), hang around the coasts and rivers of the middle part of the Americas and coastal Northern Africa, they also constitute several protected species of marine mammal .

Great White Sharks

There's now an attempt to "rebrand" these marvelous, powerful creatures as simply "White Shark" (especially since there's no "Lesser" or "Small" White Shark). The white shark is an endangered species and has fallen victim to overfishing, other nonsustainable fishing (drag nets et al), and water pollution.

Blacktip Reef Shark

These are my very favourite sharks ever! I call them "sea beagles" because of their beautiful black, white, and tan markings. I have seen several in the wild (the above is not my photo but the below is, taken at a Jakarta mall of all places). While still common to the Indo-Pacific subtropical and tropical waters, they are Near Threatened because of overfishing. They are now also found in the Mediterranean, having migrated there by way of the Suez Canal.

Well here are my goals for the month of May.

1 - Get below 210lbs.

2 - There is a metric century ride in August I would like to do.  Do a 60K bike ride this month.

I could have another one but don't want to make TriAyas' head explode =)

I just finished my first Chinese article of the month, edging the Manatees into second place.  I had forgotten how similar studying a foreign language is to endurance training: plenty of day-to-day suffering, plateaus (or is it plateaux?), small victories, and long-term goals that can only be achieved by putting in a lot of time and effort.

Beagles can be mean SOB's when provoked!

(Great) White Sharks eat them for a snack, though! Tongue out

Accomplished my first item for the challenge! I did a brick yesterday consisting of a 20 mile bike ride (it was supposed to be shorter but I took a wrong turn) with TONS of killer hills, then did a little 1 mile jaunt around my neighborhood to get the feel of running after biking (in light of my first tri on Sunday!) How's that for "exercise on Sundy"?!

My cycling goal took a big hit Saturday.  Had a 57 mile ride planned.  Got a flat at mile 22, and to make it worse my CO2 cartridge adapter (whatever that thing is called) and I couldn't fill my tire!  No more miles for me that day.  Fortunately there is still lots of time to make up for it.

That is one of the reasons I never use CO2.  Always have a pump on my bike and I must say I have an awesome one.  I just don't trust those darn CO2 things.  Even during a race.  Now, that helps me not at all when both my spare tubes have holes...

Finally. Today at lunch: Butterfinger cupcakes (I can only imagine) and gluten free brownies. I made my cup of lemon tea and walked out the door . . . without eating either one or bringing one back to the office.

I'm finally on the charts.
