Where is my special caucasian mutt, non religious holiday?

superbowl sunday?

That is not a day off... If we recognized the following Monday, then we would be good.

in these parts, a lot of places recognize the first day of deer hunting season.  does that work for ya?  lots of hairy caucasians participate in that one...and it offends people too!

For us that is a Saturday, so that is not "FAIR" either.  :-)

DanielG - 2012-08-09 11:43 AM There was a Scottish painter named Smokey MacGregor who was very interested in making a penny where he could, so he often thinned down his paint to make it go a wee bit further. As it happened, he got away with this for some time, but eventually the local church decided to do a big restoration job on the outside of one of their biggest buildings. Smokey put in a bid, and, because his price was so low, he got the job. So he set about erecting the scaffolding and setting up the planks, and buying the paint and, yes, I am sorry to say, thinning it down with turpentine......... Well, Smokey was up on the scaffolding, painting away, the job nearly completed, when suddenly there was a horrendous clap of thunder, the sky opened, and the rain poured down washing the thinned paint from all over the church and knocking Smokey clear off the scaffold to land on the lawn among the gravestones, surrounded by telltale puddles of the thinned and useless paint. Smokey was no fool. He knew this was a judgment from the Almighty, so he got down on his knees and cried: "Oh, God, Oh God, forgive me; what should I do?" And from the thunder, a mighty voice spoke. "Repaint! Repaint! And thin no more!"

Seriously... We should start a new 4 day holiday... Everyone Days! This would be like a personal day at work... use it however you see fit. Get Friday and Monday. Celebrate being a caucasian mutt non-religious triathlete... or go on a religious worship binge... all the curches could have big conventions. It would be great.

Good for you, being a member of the majority and magnanimously accepting the offerings of others. When I was in Nepal, I had my forehead dabbed by the sadhus, and in Tibet, had blessings from the monks. But here in the US, it rankles me that in a country that has no official religions, the underlying assumption is that I am christian. I recall going to a job interview in a southern state to become director of a program. While being shown around the town, shown the sights, the biggest bragging point was the high concentration of churches in the area. Good for them being proud of their town, but sorry, no one even asked me if I am a christian, let alone a church-goer.

As for taking things in the "spirit in which they are intended", I am still affected by people I knew in high school and college, who upon learning I was not christian, proclaimed that they were going to "pray for me" - in essence telling me that they believed that my personal beliefs were somehow less valid than theirs. This is no different to me than mormons retroactively "converting" people, including those who died in the Holocaust due to their beliefs.

Those who look for insults generally find them. Enjoy your day.

x2 on this ^^^  DanielG, I find it funny that people who have served all over the world and come in contact with all races/religions are the ones who seem to recognize this fact better than most!

Rather a broad brush (in both ways). There are plenty of examples of ex-military who subsequently join white supremacist movements and plenty of non-military people who have had contact with other cultures.

TheClaaaw - 2012-08-08 4:39 PM

I have seen an offhand reference in several threads about politics/tolerance where it seemed to be a pretty established assumption that we should all roll our eyes at the people who have the Co-exist bumper stickers. The one I see regularly is the one with each letter made of a form of a symbol of a major world religion, C is crescent for Islam, T is a cross for Christianity.

OK so I see the irony of being cut off in traffic and honked at by a car with one of these, but the mocking seemed to be for the existence of them in the first place.

So I ask, if you're someone who rolls your eyes at them, or makes negative assumptions about the driver of such a car, can you give me an honest reason as to why?

I have only read your post and nothing else in this thread. I have never mocked anyone with a coexist sticker on their car. I have observed to myself (and maybe mentioned it to my wife) that people with these stickers are worse than your average drivers. They go 5-15 MPH under the speed limit. They turn with out turn signals. They stop in the middle of roads trying to figure out where they should turn......

Obviously I am being somewhat tongue in cheek--I have never figured out the pink font function-- but I am at least a little bit serious.

you don't have a problem with this, imagine if in the hospital, an Imam came by to see if you wanted to pray with him. Still OK with it? How about a Brahmin from the local Hindu temple, asking if you wanting to have him make an offering to Vishnu? Or a coven leader, offering to burn incense to the Goddess on your behalf?  If a(n) Imam, Brahmin or a coven leader came in and asked me to pray, I would politely decline. I would have absolutely zero problem with that. Here in NYC, I am often approached and asked if I'm Jewish by the Jews for Jesus guys. I am not offended-  I sometime chat with them and ask them why they only want to convert Jews- why wouldn't they be trying to convert Muslims or other non-Christians to Christianity?

I think the eye rolling is akin to the "dead head sticker on a Cadillac" thinking. And to the division of the US in almost every way. Our melting pot needs, IMHO, to be more like a stew pot with distinct ingredients than a homogenous fondue.

My husband wears his coexist tshirt on Sundays and drives his big old truck with bumper stickers that say things like "Earth First: we'll mine the other planets later" and an NRA sticker. I will tell you that he believes every one of those things, even if some might think they are contradictory.

He is used to coexisting. He is from a country that is very roughly 1/4 Muslim, 1/4 Hindu, 1/4 catholic and 1/4 Protestant with animists and jewish people too. the country's Grande Mosque directly across the street from the country's Synagogue, by design. He went to school at Catholic, Hindu, And Muslim schools throughout his K-12 schooling. Not that there is no segregation or stratification of the diverse cultures there, but they seem to be on to something. maybe that comes from no overwealming majority.

On a side note:

There was a car in the parking lot that had a Coexist sticker on it. It also had a bumper sticker that said, "Just Be Nice". No funny joke or terrible deed the driver did. I just thought the "Just Be Nice" sticker was cool. No way I could have that on my car.
