Pretty good day today.

Ran 8.5 this morning on a chilly dreary day. I was expecting a noticeable drop in my energy but felt pretty good through 6 then struggled a bit.  But, that is nothing new.

I did "cheat" at breakfast, but I allow myself a little bit a week.  We always go out for breakfast after our long workouts on the weekend.  Had my typical eggs over medium, bacon and 2 pieces of rye toast.  Did not feel bad about having the toast.  If I am good 98% of the time, I am not going deny myself this one "indulgence".

Since breakfast was so late, 11am, and we ended up taking a long nap, no lunch.  Dinner was a fajita salad with chicken, a little shrimp and some salsa, guac, sour cream and cheese.  And a sf Popsicle for desert.

When I tested post-nap, I was in Medium ketosis.  Happened faster than I expected.  We started this on Tuesday and set a goal to get into Ketosis by Saturday and we made it.  This week's goal for hubby is 3 pounds.  for me 1,5.

Tomorrow is cooking some for the week.

I'd be curious to see the effect of being in Ketosis (or Low carbs) is having on the Resting Heart Rate and Blood pressure for those of you doing it for at least a month.

I am guessing most of you have been training for a while, and only lost a few pounds in that first month, so any benefit would be due to low carbs.

I'm interested to see if what happens to me is the norm for most people, or I'm just wired differently.

exact same weight for the last 3 days, down to the ounce.  Weekends are definitely tougher than weekdays.  We usually only eat 2 meals since breakfast is late due to long workouts.  Also, I tend to not drink enough water.

Working on that today, and cooking stuff for the week.

For those of you into the podcast format, I highly recommend listening to the latest Rich Roll podcast. He has Vinnie Tortorich return by popular demand. Rich's podcasts are long, almost 2 hrs average. Anyway, these guys are long time friends, with very different nutritional approaches. They et into real debate without rudeness or yelling, even though Vinnie is known for his angry rants.

Vinnie is very upfront about ketosis being for advanced biohacking, not a casual pursuit.

I like Rich very much, i do think he is closed-minded as a vegan. He says his decision was not ethically based, but I rarely ever find someone promoting veganism who isn't ideologically driven before evidence. Still, it's a great conversation.

Vinnie argues strongly for the truth about what causes heart disease. It is just a great podcast. I have only listened partway, so I have no idea where this may go, but so I can recommend this whole heartedly.

Read Rich Roll's book...Finding Ultra..amazing book!  The guy had addiction issues and knowing his personality was "all or nothing" attitude, he went Vegan almost overnight.  He is a bit "out there" my cycling coach met him, but give his book a read, interesting stuff!

Claaw-do you have a link to the podcast you recommend? Or any others you find informative?

Yesterday was a good day until dinner where I totally blew it!  My son had his Eagle Scout  ceremony and i was not going to forgo trying the food I spend all weekend preparing.  Plus, the occasion called for cake!  So be it.  Back with the program today.

Question:  For those of you who trained for an IM on a ketogenic diet and then raced in ketosis, what foods did you consume during very long training rides and on race day?  I am trying to envision non-Gu, non-banana long runs or races

I would also like to hear about doing an ironman without carbs, I also listen to some of the podacast and Ive heard Vinnie Tortorich say that on long days before a workout he has some oatmeal. I rode 40 miles on sunday and was wiped out afterwards later in the day. On the 14 of this month I will be one month into dietary ketosis. I feel fine training for an hour at a time but going longer than that seems tough....

Starting to get bored with food.  I am not an egg lover so breakfasts are a challenge.  Can usually choke down 2 hard boiled eggs and a few pieces of bacon.

Dinner is rarely an issue as any protein over a spinich salad is good.  Lunches are my problem.  I just am not very hungry and really nothing appeals to me.  The thought of a hamburger or chicken is so unappealing.

I know this is just my normal week 2 crankies, but figured you would all understand.

Still good on the scale.  Up a little yesterday but down today.

When I run home for lunch, I whip up some chichen salad or tuna with mayo, with some cheese on the side and also some dill pickles...

I plan to. Write about this more in depth on my blog, but to the quesiton of getting bored, here's another perspective. Most of the world's population eats the same few things every day. Novelty in taste is a modern invention, for affluent countries. We also have the diseases of affluence/civilization that are diet related. Thousands of new food "products" are introduced every year, all of them crap. Even if you're not a processed food eater, relying on carbs for a lot of calories allows for more variety and novelty, because there are tons of ways to manipulate them. Truth is, most of it involves artificial flavoring, even in things disguised as real and natural foods. If it comes from a can, box or bag, it's probably crap.

So, since asked, here are the podcasts I listen to, and my comparative assessments. I was going to bog about this anyway, so here's a preview.

The Angriest Trainer. -like Howard Stern talking fitness. Blunt, explicit, funny. Basic mantra "no sugar no grains" but he got into the ketosis discussion somewhat accidentally. The best episodes to explain it are the ones with Andrea Anders. She is an actress who is friends with Anna, and asks all the questions a normal person would. Go back in the log and find the ones with her name, listen in order.

Latest in Paleo. Probably my favorite podcast for information density, and philosophy. Angelo Coppola is just great. The episode titles barely begin to describe the shows. He produces them with tons of preparation, and has fantastic after-the-bell segments. His latest episode discusses the lowcarb vs Paleo inner discussions. Every episode is nutrient dense. Worth every minute.

Livin La Vida Low Carb and Low Carb Conversations with Jimmy Moore. Jimmy is a brand name in low carb. He's the Leno of podcasting. This makes him a lightning rod for controversy. His own weight jumped back up last year, and now he is in ketosis to change things. He is a genuinely nice guy, and easy to listen to. But he becomes the poster child for the difficulties with the low carb movement. He is currently on hiatus, allowing others to host his shows. His best of 2012 encore week is a great place to start. Low carb conversations hosted with Dietitian Cassie covers news items about food and health. He also has a show called Ask the Low Carb Experts.

The Fat-Burning Man with Abel James. This is one of the top health podcasts in the US. He has a smooth voice and the show is information rich.

Relentless Roger and the Caveman Doctor. -not as off the chain as Vinnie, but the give and take of the show is conversational. Still rich in information. One Philly guy, one Pittsburgh. Good insights from somoene inside the medical establishment, though he is not pro-conventional "wisdom." Warning: for triathletes and other endurance folks, you won't like their attitude about our kind of sport and training. But that is true for most paleo/ancestral folks. And being open minded to that, I plan on changing my approach to tri this year. That brings me to

The Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast. Ben won Leadville 125 while doing his first ketogenically fueled race. Ben is the epitome of a life hacker. His show is more like meet the press. I's wonky and detail oriented, but a wealth of info. Triathletes interested in low carb should put him high on a list of priorities.

Paleo Magazine Radio. New podcast, 3 episodes old. Good stuff.

I listened to a lot of The Smarter Science of Slim. He talks about set point theory a lot, not sure if that fits with other theories, but his advice is similar. Makes a good case for intense exercise. Good back and forth with co-host, format much like Vinnie and Anna.

Balanced Bites. I stated following the hosts on twitter, now I am just starting to check out the podcasts. No opinion yet.

Lastly, an interesting podcast to watch someone evolve is the Garden Variety Triathlete. He was a converted vegan. Then he paid attention to ketosis and allowed more animal products in, and the vegans got mad. He is honest about his evolving views. He recently went to a Bob Seebohold seminar. He is relaunching his podcast as Fit Fat Fast. I have not listened yet, but there are two episodes up.

I am sure there are many others worth checking out. Considering I have been listening to podcasts for less than two months, that's a ton of material.

Great info on Podcasts!

I've been having a bit of fruit, guess I'm more Paleo than Keto, but was curious if anyone has been tracking blood pressure at all?  I've read that Low Carb life-style eating habits (sorry, but i HATE the word DIET!) can lower pressure.  Personally I'm low anyway, rarely have a 3-digit number and will be about 88/50 the further I get into IM training.

Anyway, did an hour of boot camp this morning, an hour swim later and then was going to head out for a run, but was very dizzy.  My BP today is 93/53...at very low training volume and measured about 25 minutes after my swim.  I can only imagine how low my BP will drop as training volume increases.  Curious if anyone else is doing this with low BP?

Thank for the wealth of information, Claaw!  So interesting.

So I think I mentioned that I ate cake on Monday followed by left over cookies on Tuesday from my son's event.  I felt like crap Tuesday night and all day yesterday even though yesterday was totally a clean food day.  It's amazing how the sugar affected me.  Never again.  I dread weighing myself on Saturday morning.  I'm certain the scale will rise.

Today is a new day and a new opportunity to eat clean and help my body heal.

I bought some watermelon for the kids yesterday. Have not tasted one in years, and used to love it. Took one bite and could not finish the piece. I felt like I had eaten a spoon of pure sugar, it was overwhelming.

When I eat low carbs (Instead of Ketosis), I still enjoy some berries, or an apple, but watermelon is way too sweat for me now.

I think I'll be fine, had cabbage fried with garlic, bacon and walnuts at last night's meal. There are benefits to eating this way :-)

As I mentioned in a previous post, my BP changes a lot depending on Carbs or no Carbs. My resting Heart Rate also slows down.

A guy i work with had his blood pressure go down to 110 / 64 after two weeks of Ketosis while his RHR went down 18 beats per minutes.

I just checked my BP. It was always good, even when I was 100 pounds heavier. Steadily 128/78 or thereabouts. Tnight my wife checked it with a real cuff-style home gauge, She thught it was wrng, so she checked three times 110/60

We had a full pn paleo dinner, a little higher carb than a strict ketogenic dinner, but I got the kids involved in cooking this afternoon. Min course: shrimp in mornay sauce (our vday tradition for years) but no couscous this time, instead we had garlic mashed cauliflower. Steamed asparagus with local grass-fed butter. Dessert: brownie bites from paleo living magazine special edition. I even had organic cocoa nibs here, which I made into cocoa powder with my magic bullet. Add almond flour, coconut oil, stevia extract, vanilla, baking soda....baked in heart shaped cupcake pans, then topped with real whipped cream.

yeah this low carb thing is so boring, right?

It was always high, product of being aobese I am sure. It is still pretty high, I have lots of weight yet to lose. I just checked it in semi-resting. All I've done is make my wife breakfast. 59.

An average resting Heart rate is 60-80, so why would you consider semi-resting 59 high?

If you still have lots of weight to loose, that is a pretty darn good Heart rate.

Another good week.  I am at my lowest weight in (I think) over 20 years.  It is just falling off this time.  Not complaining!

I do feel a bit sluggish in my workouts, but that may also be because I have not been very consistent lately.

Not sure what my BP is, but just tested my HR and it was 55.  Pretty normal for me.  And that is sitting at my desk on a conference call.

I use an app for HR.  Not sure the name, but it is very accurate.  Place your finger over the camera lens and it works.

I guess I. Dd not know what average was. But I assume average is probably not ideal, as average is also overweight and disease ridden these days. I just checked it again after running errands with the kids. So sitting, but after light activity. 67. I think I have some irregularities in there. Wen I got or my annual on Wednesday. i want the doctor to listen for a solid minute. i swear I have a syncopated every 15th beat. I have a jazz heart I suppose.

Dodgersmom - great job on weight loss!  My goal is to get back to pre first  pregnancy  weight, 20 years ago.  I think I have about five pounds to go.  Might decide to go lower depending on how I feel.  Scared to step on the scale tomorrow after Monday and Tuesday's hiccups.

My blood pressure is definitely low-somewhere around 89 over 68?  I will check in the morning.  No clue about resting heart rate.

Dinner tonight is two scrambled eggs in butter and olive oil, cheddar cheese, two strips of bacon and a few almonds.  Yum.
