Master 1480 Southwest Chicago 'burbs | Subject: RE: ROUTES!!!! Not sure if I'm just missing something here.... I've created some routes (the last two, "7 miler" and "8 miler" were both done by clicking the "Add new route" button while I was entering my run), and now when I got back to check what the actual route is, all I see is one point -- my starting point -- and no other points. It still has the correct total distance, but no elevation information (not that there's much up and down around here) and no route. One I created last week, the "8 miler" route created just this morning. Doesn't matter how I bring up the route -- either going through Route Manager, or clicking on the link to the route that gets displayed with my run in my blog. I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.1. Thanks! Edited to say: same behavior with IE 7. Edited again to say..... I must be losing my mind. I just double-checked the routes again and they're there now. Please disregard me as I'm apparently crazy. Regular 71 Winnipeg | Subject: RE: ROUTES!!!! Good morning. I am having trouble with the climbing feature. I took my twelve mile route, clicked short segments and am climbing the alps, by the look of things. I live on the prairies, so the only climb should be in the first three miles, and very very short. I'm pretty sure my 2 other routes are off as well. Thanks |

Champion 13323 | Subject: RE: ROUTES!!!! This is possibly one of the remaining bugs we're trying to pin-down, or it could be a new one. Something happened about 4 points from your origin causing your 'absolute' elevation to get mixed-up with the total climb data. Can you tell me ANYTHING that you did as you were creating the route? Did you click off the points real fast? Did you use the 'Undo' button a lot? Maybe even the 'Clear' or a combination of buttons? Any insight will help a lot as I haven't been able to reproduce these. Don't delete this route or the others, we will re-calculate all routes and climb/elevation data once we figure this out. |

Regular 71 Winnipeg | Subject: RE: ROUTES!!!! Ron, I had it on a large magnifiction so I could click and get in the few hills in the first 3 miles, and your right, I did click very fast in this area. There didnt seem to be anything out of the ordinary happening as a result. |

New user 7 London | Subject: RE: ROUTES!!!! Hi all, This is a great new feature and I'm busily entering my various routes as I do them. However, I've run into what appears to be a bug caused by a "hole" in the USGS elevation data. I've plotted a route around the edge of this hole and made it publicly available here http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/map.asp?routeid=4339 to highlight it. If you plot a route that passes through this area then you get a crazy elevation graph (as in the attached picture, if I've managed to attach the file properly) with a minimum height of -1e33M feet! Unfortunately, one of my run routes passes right through this area. I'm not fussed about the elevation data but it fails to save the route. Is it possible to add some sanity checking on the elevation data that's received to avoid this? (untitled.JPG) Attachments ---------------- untitled.JPG (97KB - 44 downloads) |

Champion 13323 | Subject: RE: ROUTES!!!! Can you look at it again? Is this screenshot BEFORE you saved it? Are you still seeing your screenshot? Looking at the route via the link it looks a lot more normal to me, can you verify? Regardless, there is a bug somewhere...it seems that saving corrected it. New user 7 London | Subject: RE: ROUTES!!!! Sorry, I didn't explain myself very well. The route that I linked to is fine but it marks the approximate boundary of the area that the elevation data is broken for. The screenshot I posted was of a route which had points on either size of that area and one in the middle. It's not possible to save any route which has any points inside that area. |

Champion 13323 | Subject: RE: ROUTES!!!! Ok, that 'area' in the middle....is that a river? So just to get this right, if you plot to the right of this, then another point in the middle and back to the right, it's fine (like in the good link)...but if you go 'left' of what looks like a river, it's all messed-up per your screenshot? |

Champion 11641 Fairport, NY | Subject: RE: ROUTES!!!! If the usgs doesn't have data for a particular point, it returns the number you noticed. When it encounters these, the route tracker is supposed to substitute the previous points elevation to maintain something like consistency. We'll take a look. |

Champion 13323 | Subject: RE: ROUTES!!!! UPDATE, I was able to map your route and I did replicate your bug...it appears the depending on where you click in this area, you get good data for elevation or very bad elevation data...or there just are wormholes in the Hammersmith area... Let's ask marmadaddy to look at this before to see if it's a USGS issue or an issue on our part and if we can correc it. |

New user 7 London | Subject: RE: ROUTES!!!! Ah! That makes sense. Alternatively there really is a 1,000,000:1 incline at that point in my run and I'm just so good at hills that I never noticed! (in my dreams...) Thanks for looking into it. |

Veteran 164 Toronto | Subject: RE: ROUTES!!!! Loving the routes. Set up a theorectical, hoped for route today. It's around minus 100 with the wind chill in Toronto and the CN Tower, aka THE DEATH TOWER is dropping sheets of ice threatening us all. So... dreaming of spring. Now I set up the route but somehow set it up as a run - at 130 km that's a long run. Can anyone tell me how to convert to bike? Also, as there is an option for private or not on the routes does that mean that we can access a general list of routes? |

Member 8 Austria | Subject: BUG: Elevation retrieved is sometimes 0, plus jitter errors. Since I live in Austria (which strangely is not in the list of countries!?) I log my routes there. The elevation feature seems to work, but sometimes a point will just get an elevation of 0 from the DB. Since the baseline elevation here is around 600m above sea level my routes will show a deep 600m fall at some points. This is possible to fix by undoing and then putting a point at a slightly different location, but it is tedious! It may also be a good idea to smooth out the data a little bit, especially for points close together such as when doing a hairpin turn on a steep slope. There's a +/-1 meter noise in the data for very steep slopes which artificially increases the total climb logged. This is quite bad for steep hills with a lot of turns: I might be entering a long hill climb and at points the elevation will be going down. I am sure this is partly due to the low spatial resolution of the elevation data. So yeah, I think you need a) detection of 'null' points b) smoothing of the elevation of points that are close together. |

I am sure this is partly due to the low spatial resolution of the elevation data. So yeah, I think you need a) detection of 'null' points b) smoothing of the elevation of points that are close together. The elevation data comes from the U.S. Geological Survey, a dept. of the US Government. Sometimes, particularly in foreign countries, there isn't data for a point or it returns a value of 0. When it returns a value of 'unknown' we replace it with the previous elevation value to maintain some consistency. When it returns a 0, there isn't too much we can do about it because it's a valid value. As to smoothing points that are close together, it's a guessing game and it might have to do with the country the data is describing. My testing on steep hills in my area in the US shows a fairly high level of accuracy. I'll take a look at it for the next version though.

New user 1 Sydney | Subject: RE: BUG: Elevation retrieved is sometimes 0, plus jitter errors. Hi, I'm mapping routes in Hong Kong and Australia and there seems to be quite a few holes in the elevation data supplied by the US Geological Survey with points often returning an incorrect number or a zero. This results in some strange elevation profiles but I can live without these. However does the figure calculated for distance include elevation changes? A couple of routes I have mapped have come out a little longer than I thought and these are routes where the elevation graph is incorrect. This route mapping is a great feature, using the satallite image I can even follow mountain trails that I run on. Thx. |

Champion 11641 Fairport, NY | Subject: RE: BUG: Elevation retrieved is sometimes 0, plus jitter errors. Elevation is not considered when determining the distance values. Elevation data doesn't have the same degree of reliability as distance data. How much is 'a little' longer? |

Expert 878 Tallahassee, FL | Subject: RE: ROUTES!!!! Ron and marmadaddy, This is an awesome feature! I relocated several months ago and this has been great in finding new places to run/bike. I'm having one issue. Yesterday I created my first bike route. I have 4-5 running routes saved. Since yesterday, I tried to create a new running route twice. When I click save, it returns to my training log as normal, but it fills in the cycling route I created yesterday in the cycling field, and leaves the running field blank. A return to the route creator shows that it didn't save my running route. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks again for another of many great features. Also, marma, thoroughly enjoying the bass player of the day posts in your blog! BTW: I'm using version 6 of IE. |

The first time it happened, I had the mile marker feature turned on and noticed that when I hit 1 mile on the route, the bottom of the page showed an error (I'm using IE 7). So, I tried again without the mile markers turned on, but the same error appeared on the bottom of the page at the same point. That said, I was able to route the rest of my run, and when I clicked the Save button, it went through the motions of saving, but then it returned me to my training log and the run hadn't been saved. Oh - and I got to the route mapping by clicking on the "Add New Route" button from within my training log when entering my run. |
