tjtryon - 2007-05-17 6:58 AM Add 1 more commute to me, and that will likely be my last ride for a little bit, as I got hit and runned by a car and totaled my bike this AM at 5:30AM. That would now be 3/12 of the rides I have planned. tjtryon 12 3

Ouch, glad you are safe and predominately ok.

A few hundred dollars worth of parts later, and I have the bike ridable, AND I marked up yet one more commute today. I'm pretty sore, but I did get one more in, for a total of 4 out of 12.

Work week's done, 3 commutes this week, would have been four but I made the mistake of listening to the weather forecast and didn't ride in anticipation of thunder storms that never happened.

8.5 commutes done/50 commutes goal

The streets were dry, so I rode in, in spite of rain in the forecast.  It still looks like rain but the streets are still dry - perhaps I'll stay dry on the ride home.

I got in 3 commutes this week for just over 100 miles. So, I'm 3/48 now. Much of the week next week, I'll be a single dad and will have to get creative to commute in. After next week, my son's school is out and I may be able to get in some 4 commute weeks going.

TJ, sorry to hear of the accident. Glad to hear you are mostly alright and were able to get your bike usable.

Bopper, I don't have any advice. 90% of my miles over the past 18 mo has been commuting. I've never flatted commuting, but have had 5 flats on solo training rides. I've never pinch-flatted and run 100 psi inflated once a week on 700x25 Nashbar cheapie tires.

Camy... I wish it were so easy for me... I have to inflate every day... and probably will have to inflate twice a day to avoid these flats going home. I'm going to switch back to the 700x25 tires for commuting ... maybe just use the 700x23 tires for races.

What types of tubes do you ride? I run the cheapie think rubber (butyl?) tubes, not the latex tubes, and I can go a month maintaining the same tire pressure. I hear the thin rubber as well as the latex tubes are not good for maintaining pressure (air porisity?). Maybe look at getting thicker tubes, and not the ultra lightweight tubes, if that is what you are running.

TJ.... thanks for the advice. I use the cheapest tubes I can find. I was told about that issue by the LBS. The tubes they use I get far less wear out of then cheap tubes I buy from the local store. I am going to talk to the LBS guys today and see if there's some other issue that I need to address.

Hope your doing better today TJ.... no lingering side effects from the accident I hope?

I've had the best luck with the cheapo Kenda tubes. They may be a few grams heavier, but they have been pretty bulletproof so far - and I've hit stuff that has destroyed rims. When the car hit me on Thursday, it was enough to bend the rim, but the tube was fine.

Me? No issues from the wreck aside from a bit of soreness, and some tenderness on my ankle (and a bruise in a, um, private spot). I made the bike ridable on Thursday PM, and actually rode it to the Bike to Work celebration on Friday, as I was a volunteer for one of the Pedel and Park locations. It did some good mentally to get on the bike that quickly. I have a metric century tomorrow morning as well.

Welcome to the newcomers jashac, jcjsc00, and tc681.

TJ - man! what a scare! I'm glad you're OK. Way to go getting right back out there!

Comet - cleaning my bike, yah, um, well, maybe not after _every_ ride.

Bopper - sorry about the bad luck with the flats. Is there glass or something on your route? Maybe some kevlar tire liners would help.

And, BTW, as far as I'm concerned, biking to the pool counts - the "Bike Or Run Or Swim To Work Or Any Other Place You Would Normally Drive Challenge" is just too much of a mouthful

I biked 4 of 4 work days this week. Happily without any flats.

The gym closes before I get to work on the weekends, so I have to shower in the unit. The shower isn't as nice, but it's more convenient since I can pick up scrubs before I get cleaned up.

OHHHH... boooo hoooo.... I hope you feel lucky having a shower available at all. I get the luxury of sponge bath in the mens bathroom sink. How's that for inconvenient.... LOL

Great work this week episcopit.... great week to do all that riding... National Bike Week (in the USA). Keep up the great work.

Kev

I work in a hospital on a military installation. I do take the shower for granted, since there are multiple options.

What I'm really thankful for are hospital scrubs. It lightens my load to not have to carry clothing in with me. As long as no one decides we need to report to work in uniform to then change into scrubs, I'm golden here.

been lookin at buying a new bike. im considering a Gary fisher Cobia 29er, but leaning more towards the Gary Fisher "City Bike" Mendota or something similar. like the Trek FX 7.5 disk. i rode the 29er today and man its a nice bike, fit really well. but not really my kind of riding, but it would be nice to have the option of off roading it. allthough the only time i would is while im camping and most of those are gravel trails any way, and i think the mendota or the fx with the right tires would do just fine. gonna have to test drive a few before i make up my mind.

Comet,

Have fun looking for a new bike. I had a Gary Fisher mountain bike that I enjoyed for several years. I gave it away before I moved, and I miss it even though I haven't done any off road cycling for a couple of years. Now I ride a hybrid (Jamis Sport) to commute and enjoy it. It's a nice compromise to have the upright position in city traffic with thinner tires for efficiency.

Week two for me, the first week after the National Ride Your Bike To Work week.  Today I rode, making it 7 of 50.  Good thing I have a chart to keep up with it.  Now if I just had a chart to count laps in the pool.

Looks like I missed setting a goal (I was assuming 50)  but since you added this

biking to the pool counts - the "Bike Or Run Or Swim To Work Or Any Other Place You Would Normally Drive Challenge" is just too much of a mouthful

I might make it more of a challenge for me.  There are 85 work days between 1 May and 1 Sept, and if I can count trips I think I would like to go for 80.  (I might need that chart to keep track after all)

BTW TJ  glad you got the bike back functioning and are riding again.

Pretty lame performance from  me so far.  I've got 1 lousy commute.   I keep telling myself I am going to finish my supposed commuter specific bike, but I have my MTB and my reg roadie I could be using.    I will make a personal commitment to 3 commutes next week.   I need to start rolling to hit my goal of 50!
