Master 1362 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: run4yrlif's group-CLOSED Man... I dissappear for a few days and I'm 4 days behind in the thread... i'll have to catch up. As for age... try being 36 and starting in triathlons for the first time. That's the largest and most competitive age group (M35-39) out there in my area so i'm very humbled everytime I race (run or tris). |

Master 1914 Finally north of the Mason-Dixon Line | Subject: RE: run4yrlif's group-CLOSED Afternoon grouP: Have a bike question for you.... I did my first TRI without much time in the saddle but did lots of spin classes (child care issues). I have realized my error and am now devoting Saturday and Sunday mornings to getting a ride in. My question is this: My bike has 3 gears in front and 8 gears in back. When I am in the large front gear and middle back gear i feel like I am moving BUT I have a slow cadence. When I am in the middle front gear and the back rear gears I am maintaining a cadence of 90+ but I don't feel like I am moving. I am heading to sports store today to check out cadence/spedometers/odometers... So... is it better to be able to maintain a high cadence of 90+ using a lower gear or using the heavier gear with a slower cadence - basically what is going to help me increase my speed. Thanks, Cathleen |

Pro 4216 Sous Mon Diadème | Subject: RE: run4yrlif's group-CLOSED I wish I COULD try being 36 and doing my first tri... instead I'm... older than that doing my first tri . I'm with Carrie on the "when your job requires physical activity, how to appropriately fit in rest days, and what REALLY counts as training?" This is a tough thing. I sometimes "fake it" (EASY! Keep your minds out of the gutters ) when I teach... and I deserve an Academy Award for it, of course, but honestly, even when I'm going full force on it my body is so accustomed to it that I am not sure of the effect... |

Thanks, Cathleen A cadence of ~90 is right for most people, but not for everyone. Some people are just more efficient at a lower cadence (Jan Ullrich, for instance). If you can gague your effort as compared to your speed, you should be able to get a feel as to what's right for you. But definitely get a computer, and I'd strongly suggest one with a cadence feature. |

Extreme Veteran 877 Pa | Subject: RE: run4yrlif's group-CLOSED Oh No! Weights can't count as a rest day uh oh! I'm going to have to revise my entire schedule now. SERIOUSLY, coming up with that was hard in the first place. I had to take my tri schedule and combine it with my running schedule then combine the two with my weights (which I cannot live without), then my teaching & my own training in martial arts schedule. Let's not forget about soccer on Sundays. I think something has to go! CRAP! I'm going to sleep on this tonight. |

LONG legs and long cranks... takes some VERY serious effort to keep them spinning at 90+... however... I can spin at 80-85 all day long, and have - did 800km in 4 days last summer - yes that was 4 consecutive 100+ mile days. After finishing 10 hours in the saddle... I felt tired, but most days I could have gone further. For interest sake... I probably averaged 27 km/h for the 800 km. So how tall are you? And how long are your cranks? |

Member 281 | Subject: RE: run4yrlif's group-CLOSED Good Morning group, I'm feeling a very old 41 today. Woke up late and 1st lap swim session is over. Looks like I will be swimming at Noon with the serious swimmers. Jim, I don't know what an RR is related to biking.(yet) I rode my stock Tarmac for the TT. I also had on my blue & lime green racing kit on, this didn't help me go faster either but I did get lots of looks at the gas station. For everyone new, in bike racing the Kit=team uniform. Hey Bopper lots of Canadians at the Teddy Roosevelt Park this past weekend. Lots on HWY 85 heading to the Black Hills. JBD, I wish we could get a Tri-Clinic going in Bismarck. There was one last year but not this year. I have been talking to a few experienced Tri-people about it but I have to have several people interested before it will happen. Houston Tri-Mama, you should start talking biking with people maybe a good deal on a bike will appear. I had a guy offer to let me use his extra speedplay pedals this weekend for the races because mine haven't come in yet. Same thing with an Aero-Bar if it fits. Also last year I got a deal on used bike. I started riding it in May and had to pay it off by September. |

It was a fantastic mini class taught by Chris Andrus. He is always a top 10 T1 in the sprints he does and it is amazing how fast he is off his bike in t2. I will end up one big cut and bruise when I try what I learned, so I will practice for a few hours in a parking lot before my next tri. |

I haven't done one but I have heard good things from people who have.Pollywog - 2007-05-22 11:09 AM Hey Bopper lots of Canadians at the Teddy Roosevelt Park this past weekend. Lots on HWY 85 heading to the Black Hills. No doubt about that... this past weekend was our May holiday weekend.... (Victoria Day)... yours is this coming weekend (Memorial Day, I beleive). Was a great weekend for a holiday... mostly sunny and warm. Not surprised a lot travelling in the USA... specially the border states. Question for the group... is a triathlon clinic worth the expenditure? I could attend one this coming weekend... even though I can't run... I'm still thinking of going just to get some exposure. What are the thoughts on this? D |

Master 1609 Gold Coast Australia. | Subject: RE: run4yrlif's group-CLOSED Good Morning! Just finished a 2300m non-stop swim. Tried to pace myself at the beginning knowing it's kind of a long haul and the first 750m seemed really slow, but when I actually looked at the split times at the end - there was no difference! Could it be that when you are relaxed and try not to push it, your body in the water is actually more efficient? Sure this doesn't apply when you are running... |
